Motherwell 1-1 Celtic - Willie Collum

Outstanding for 88 minutes then gave Celtic a present of a penalty which changed the outcome of the game. After the kick in the gut Thomson gave us on Sunday this one was incredibly hard to take.

Can't describe it so will just leave it here.

Can we start a sweepstake as to what minute Kevin Clancy will give Celtic their penalty on Saturday?

Hearts 1-0 Motherwell - Andrew Dallas

After a week in the Carnival de Celtic, was nice to get back to a game of football without Celtic and on two teams who generally do their talking on the pitch.

Sadly this game was dreadful - my dad asked me earlier if we deserved a draw, my response was 'Hearts didn't deserve to win' which isn't quite the same.

Dallas is a referee who I find quite hard work and today was probably one of his better days. However the first caution of the day seemed a little bizarre as Kipre charged out of defence with the ball, he slipped on the pitch and as he did he clipped a Hearts player. Incredibly harsh. And he continued to let cynical and late tackles go unpunished on both sides showing him to have a yardstick that was flexible.

The HEarts goal came from a robust tackle on Campbell and a bit of hand control from Lafferty. Two possible fouls for Motherwell, neither given and goal stood. I thought the tackle on Campbell was a foul but I thought the handball was accidental and playing on from there was acceptable. Since then I've spoken to a Jambo supporting acquaintance who disagrees on both counts - he thought the tackle was OK but the handball was very deliberate, cute and should have been penalised.

Tait followed Kipre into the book for a pretty blatant attack stopping trip for which he could have no complaints.

Six hours on just about thawed out and hope for better games against Partick and Killie in the next seven days.

Not having had occasion so far this season to lower the tone of this section, I booked a weekend in Glasgow, with a view to rectifying this omission. The East of Scotland and Lowland Leagues U-20 competition offered three matches in the West on Friday night. All three were on artificial pitches. The choice was made, the club's website and Twitter checked, together with the league's website. There being no mention of postponements I duly made my way to Harriet Road, to find it in darkness and deserted. Gary Hanvidge therefore escaped the distorting lens.Naturally both the other games had gone ahead.

The Junior fixtures were all but wiped out on Saturday ,so the chosen fixture was

Saturday 9th December 2017
Lowland League
BSC Glasgow 0 v 1 East Stirlingshire
Craig King; Graham Chambers, Steve Ross.

BSC emerged from obscurity to enter the new Lowland League for its first season. Part of Broomhill Sports Club, they now play on the other side of the country, at Alloa Athletic's Indodrill Stadium, a 50 minute train ride away - not a situation to establish much of a supporter base. There must be lots of Killie fans in Alloa, as the three large illuminated signs in the far corner proclaimed not AAFC, nor BSC, but KFC.

The first half hour was a bland affair, so there was plenty of time to keep an eye on Mr King. He is tall and slim, with trim fairish hair, the front of which nevertheless seemed to require regular attention - or was that a slightly nervous tic? He lost early Brownie points by having a defensive free-kick moved four feet back into the penalty area and by his failure to use a handkerchief. He moved quite rapidly and always got where he needed to be. His running style, however, was slightly awkward (imagine Hen Broon dashing for the last tram over icy cobbles) and gave an impression of a tentativeness that fortunately did not carry over into his decision-making. Dissent by the Shire number 4 when penalised on 33 minutes received an instant yellow card, the home number 4 following for a holding offence. The Shire number 4 should have departed on 39 minutes, when he jumped with a forearm to the head of the BSC number 9 who was chasing past him. Mr King must have had his eyes elsewhere, as the assault was worthy of a red card, or a second yellow at least. Curiously nobody seemed too bothered, other than the victim after treatment.

The second half was anything but bland. After just one minute an offence in a crowded area earned BSC a penalty, and Mr King a hounding from three Shire defenders. The kick, however, was saved. The Shire number 2, cautioned for a trip on 55 minutes, unwisely pulled down an opponent a minute later and was quickly on his way. The free-kick was played across the area to set up a shot and a post came to Shire's rescue. There was a caution for a foul by the home number 10, before BSC netted, only to be thwarted by an offside flag. Despite two near things for Shire, BSC looked the likelier winners. On 66 minutes the home number 9 was running strongly into the area when he went down under a tackle. From the other end of the stand it looked a penalty, a view shared by the Shire faithful, one of whom suggested that the referee had a guilty conscience about the first award, until his friend pointed out that referees don't have consciences. In the end Mr King cautioned the attacker for simulation. The Shire number 7 was next to see yellow, and he let the world a d his wife know that he did not entirely agree with the decision. On 83 minutes there was a flag from Mr Chambers and after consultation two coaches were called for a long lecture. Some fell upon stony ground, however, as play swept from end to end and at a caution for the BSC number 12, Mr Chambers flagged again, a coach being sent to the stand. A trip, (strongly contested) by the home number 4 just outside the penalty area saw him too receive his second yellow, with Shire scoring from the free-kick. A stoppage-time Shire substitution took an age, with nobody moving, the number 10 finally accepting that he was the chosen one, stopping to remove his shin pads en route. Mr King resisted the temptation to speed him on his way with a card. A pity, really.

Overall it had been an entertaining afternoon, if somewhat chilly. Mr King had done a reasonable job, without a great deal of co-operation from players and staff in the later stages, but had not managed to suggest to me that he was a future star. That being so, he will probably do very well!

Sunday morning saw the streets of Glasgow swarming with thousands (literally) of Santas of all ages and genders some with twice the traditional number of legs, taking part in the annual Santa dash charity event.

In the afternoon it was of to the Excelsior Stadium for the 4.10 PM match

Sunday 10th December 2017
SPFL 1
Airdrieonians 2 v 2 Raith Rovers
Don Robertson (Glasgow); Stephen Mitchell, Colin McAlpine. 4thers Ryan Milne.

Previous visits to the ground, not for Senior matches, have always been cold affairs and this was worse than ever. I don't recall the same problem at Broomfield , but that was possibly in August. As an aside, on the return trip, with six layers and fur hat, I had to admire the bravery, if not the sense, of the group of teenage lassies who boarded the train at Coatbridge with bare legs, shoulders and even midriff.

Raith had a header go out off a post in the second minute and applied most of the early pressure. On 7 minutes however Airdrie responded with a break down the right, a defender appearing to everybody to put the ball out for a corner. Well, not quite everybody, as the assistant, trundling along some yards adrift offered his boss no help, leaving Mr Robertson to give a goal kick. When Airdrie did receive a corner some minutes later there was a very loud ironic cheer.A Raith defender received an early yellow as an attacker went sprawling. The Raith defence nearly made a hash of dealing with a cross, while their attackers were doing little better, being caught offside four times in quick succession. On 21 minutes, though, they stayed onside to take the lead. Two minutes later a mishit Airdrie shot (or was it rare skill?) turned into a tempting cross, fired home for the equaliser. Play swung rapidly, the ball being pinged about with greater rapidity than accuracy, making for good entertainment. Possession was regularly squandered, one such presenting Airdrie with the opening for their second goal on 37 minutes.

The home number 8 received a yellow card on 53 minutes for a reckless challenge. The visiting number 7 became the home fan's villain, reacting angrily to the opponent he had just fouled. On 74 minutes there was a yellow card for an Airdrie defender. In the stand I thought the foul was committed by the Raith player, but we must bear in mind that Mr Robertson was much closer - and I do not have a FIFA badge! The Diamonds looked to be hanging on to the win, but in stoppage time a defender turned the ball into his own net. There was time for one dangerous Airdrie raid, cynically stopped by the Raith number 11, who was rightly cautioned.

Mr Robertson was not greatly tested in a fairly straightforward game, his calm and pleasantly relaxed-looking manner suiting the occasion ideally.

Readers might consider it appropriate that the walk back to Drumgelloch station was by way of Old Bore Road.

A weekend visit to the capital offered the chance of three fixtures, but all the matches in the East of Scotland / Lowland Under 20 league fell foul of the weather. A number of senior clubs had already postponed their fixtures for the morrow. Saturday morning dawned bright and fair, fortunately as a fire alarm saw the hotel evacuated - though the young lad who had to leave the pool in just his shorts did not enjoy the experience.

Only two of the 16 Junior Cup matches had survived, but one of them was within reach and the home Twitter confirmed that it would go ahead thanks to the efforts of "twenty odd people" - perhaps a hyphen would have been advisable, or maybe they know their supporters too well. And so to

Saturday 20th January 2018
Scottish Junior Cup 4th Round
Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic 5 v 2 Newtongrange Star
Matthew MacDermid (Motherwell); Greig Haynes, Darren Cormack.

With the grounds just a couple of miles apart as the crow flies, this is an established derby between two of the East's leading clubs, and the home side were rewarded for their efforts with an attendance of 1063.

The Nitten keeper was forced to dive to save from a Rose free-kick in the first minute and the home side continued to apply pressure. The home fans were cheering a goal on 11 minutes, until a defender conjured up a clearance. They did not have to wait long, though, Bonnyrigg going ahead on 16 minutes. A foul midway through the half drew a "no more" warning to the Nitten number 8 and when the free-kick was played into the penalty area an excellent volley gave Bonnyrigg their second. Earlier in the half the home fans had been vociferous in their claims for offside, but as JCFC had not been watching the line at the crucial moment, he assumed that neither had the fans. On 25 minutes, however, AR2 was several yards behind play for no apparent reason and missed an obvious offside (JCFC watching intently this time!) A 38th minute free-kick for Nitten led to a little flouncing from the home side, before the low shot was deflected to restore the visitor's hopes. This optimism lasted just two minutes, Bonnyrigg heading home a cross from the right.

Rose were caught offside early in the second half - a correct decision for AR2 who was only a couple of years adrift this time. A tangle on the hour led to a free-kick for Nitten and a mild skirmish as the Rose number 2 walked away with the ball. Mr MacDermid was quickly on the scene, resulting in yellows for the home 2 and away 23. A foul off the ball earned the Nitten number 8 a yellow card on 66 minutes. Their keeper made an excellent reflex save on 71 minutes and three minutes later they reduced their arrears in a mirror image of their first goal, the only difference being that this time the kick flew high into the net. Back came the Rose once more, an effort being cleared off the line by a defender. A corner resulted, and an idiotic barge in the back gave Bonnyrigg a clear penalty, disputed by a couple of defenders, though it was hard to see on what grounds. The kick was delayed, AR1 calling Mr MacDermid over, resulting in the removal of one of the Nitten coaches. Nothing deterred, Rose scored their fourth, a nicely worked move providing the fifth just before the close. So Bonnyrigg were doubly rewarded for ensuring that the pitch was playable.

The less said about AR2 the better, but Mr MacDermid once again put in an assured performance. One or two things might have been done differently - it might have been wise to award the free-kick Nitten expected for an early push, rather than play on because they were in possession - but they were minor matters and his overall triage was sound. He used a pleasingly brief whistle style, leaving plenty of room for stronger tones on the rare occasions that needed them. His movement was as ever energetic, working well laterally and using an impressive reverse gear. His manner with players seemed good, grins often being apparent on both sides in his exchanges.

Overnight frost and flurries of snow have unsurprisingly led to the postponement of Sunday's match. Perhaps a case of better luck next time.

Motherwell 2-0 Hamilton Accies - Craig Thomson

Well it was a cold but gorgeous day in Lanarkshire yesterday as well and Motherwell were starting their second 'Road to Hampden' of the season (well we can hope) at home against the team who put us to the sword in the last game before the winter break.

Does Nick Hancock still do a Christmas bloopers DVD? If so our first goal will certainly appear on it - the last four touches all were unpressurised defensive passes by Accies players, the final one being an aggressive pass back into one corner of the goal with his keeper standing at the other side. 1-0 and four minutes in.

A fairly standard booking for Craig Tanner for a late lunge on Dougie Imrie was brandished after twenty minutes but the first half was littered with Thomson giving niggly fouls and not penalising more obvious ones and generally frustrating everyone. He did have one big decision as Motherwell new boy Curtis Main was tripped as he burst into the box and he correctly gave the penalty which Tanner knocked away for 2-0. Thomson correctly booked an Accies player for a late lunge that stopped a counter attack just before the break.

Until then the game had been turgid. Hamilton started a bit better after the restart but after five or ten minutes their heads dropped and Motherwell took control and for all the football was better there were no more goals. Thomson continued his frustrating trait of giving small nothing fouls, playing advantages when there were none and blowing up when there was. Nothing major but just annoying. Allan Campbell was booked for a reason unbeknown to anyone other than the Hunter Standside linesman.

Motherwell's passage into round 5 was seamless.

Some sad news this morning that Hamilton's community coach, Matt Craig has died in his early 20s. Huge condolences to his family and the club.

Motherwell 2-0 Ross County - Kevin Clancy

Broadly fine performance by Kevin Clancy, bit of controversy about our second goal as Ciftci dispossessed Marcus Fraser. Owen Coyle in the County dug out thought it was a foul, I thought Ciftci was stronger. I've watched it back a few times and to be honest I can't make my mind up it it is a foul or not but I certainly wouldn't say Clancy was wrong.

There were three bookings. THe Ross County player who fouled Tanner was correctly booked as was Ross MacLean for us for kicking the ball away. Cedric Kipre's yellow card for a foul seemed incredibly harsh and if I was being cynical I think it was just given because Clancy realised he had made a boner by not paying advantage and wanted to justify him stopping the game.

There was a stoppage in both halfs whilst Clancy and his fourth official tried to sort the main stand's assistant's mic.

Slight moment of jocularity when the fourth official put on the board that Motherwell were bringing off 66 (a number we do not have!) and we were informed by tannoy that Stevie Hammell was replacing England's world cup win...

It is the club who are responsible for putting the numbers into the board not the fourth official.

Hearts 1-1 Motherwell - Willie Collum

It's not that long since we were at Tynecastle but this game was night and day better with both clubs in much better form now. Collum showed an early degree of leniency by not carding McHugh for a late lunge in the first ten minutes. But other than that foul detection and understanding the game was the nature of the day.

His team correctly disallowed a Motherwell goal for offside with Curtis Main about a yard ahead of the last defender. Two Hearts penalty claims then came - Kipre's hand collided with the ball but it was from a header from close range and Collum's decision not to award a spot kick seemed sensible. The second claim however looked like a penalty as Alldred fouled Callachan. It looked worse at the game than on the TV replays but was still a foul and Collum's gesture that he played the ball was conclusively incorrrect.

Half time and my team having benefited from a couple of ridiculous own goals earlier in the week were now benefiting from a referee to keep the score at 0-0. McHugh was booked for leading with an elbow seconds into the second half and Main was cautioned for a striker's tackle midway through. Tanner was also bombing through on the Hearts goal and got into a fankle but his penalty shout was not awarded and despite shouting for it at the time, replays show this was another good decision.

The game opened up and Hearts hit the front ten from the end when a partially cleared free kick fell to Milinkovic whose shot deflected of McHugh into the onion bag. Collum added five minutes to the second half - three subs, a clash of heads and an injury to Richard Tait made this seem like a reasonable award.

Hearts conceded a couple of really careless free kicks in their own half which allowed Motherwell to launch the ball into the Hearts box with an army of attacking players waiting to pounce. The second time we punished them with Main scrambling the ball over the line (a bawhair over it but over it nonetheless) and with the benefit of replays Collum and his assistant deserve a huge amount of credit for giving the goal with the naked eye as replays show how close it was. Hearts only had time to kick off before Collum decided enough was enough.

Quite a lot of tough decisions in this game and I think Collum and his team got all but one correct. Motherwell seem to be getting their fair share of luck from opponents and referees in 2018, Easter Road on Wednesday to see if it will continue.

Motherwell 1-1 Partick Thistle - Nick Walsh

I've been very positive about Nick Walsh when I've written about him before but I thought this was pretty poor from him today. It didn't start well when Motherwell's debutant left back, Stephen Hendrie misjudged a ball and booted a Thistle player right in the dish in the first minute. It was reckless at best but Walsh decided no sanction other than the foul was necessary.

The first half wasn't too bad (from a refereeing perspective, the football was turgid) apart from that until right on half time. He harshly booked Osman for a late tackle on Campbell and then he awarded a Motherwell a free kick for a high boot that was never a foul. However as the ball trundled out for a goal kick, the keeper not having heard the whistle took a goal kick twenty yards behind where the foul was and Walsh didn't correct him, truly bizarre stuff.

Second half and it really all went to pigs and whistles. All game long people had been stealing a yard or two at a throw but then on one occasion he decided to penalise it and give the throw the other way. Standalone, it was a reasonable decision but completely out of sync with how he'd been refereeing until then.

Thistle went ahead from an unmarked header from a free kick (apparently the first header we've conceded all season!) and then the game descended into farce. Timewasting became the order of the day. Despite a learned friend next to me repeatedly pointing out that the 'best way to stop these b******** timewasting is to not gift them a soft goal' I still expect some token effort from the referee rather than just publicly looking at his watch and doing naff all else.

As he was barracked from the home crowd for not penalising the timewasting, his performance crashed around him as he started giving fouls that weren't, missing ones that were, giving throws the wrong way, overruling assistants who were much better positioned and just generally doing things that nobody understood. In fairness the four cards he brandished in this half were not unreasonable.

Curtis Main thought he had equalised after a well worked free kick but Ciftci was flagged offside in the build up - it was a close call and I've not had a look back so this one could have been right or wrong.

With ten to play we did get the leveler that we probably just about deserved but didn't look like was coming after a lovely turn and shot by Ciftci.

From there Partick didn't speed up much and Walsh did pretty little to encourage them. Despite four subs, a couple of injuries and a screed of timewasting we only played four minutes which felt at least a couple of minutes light but as we were going through the four the game had petered out and both had accepted a draw so probably all he did was let us get a pint a couple of minutes earlier.

Despite a negative report, there were flashes that showed Walsh is a good referee - his understanding of advantage is better than most and a couple of times he pulled it back when none accrued. Think if he is going to reach the heights though he is going to need to get better a refereeing with a crowd on your back and dealing with the cynical antics some footballers get up to.

Motherwell thought they'd

Motherwell 2-0 St Johnstone - Don Robertson

In my humble opinion, this is how you referee a football match - excellent from minute one to ninety. Always more lenient than those around him but without letting too much go, commanded a respect from all the players and only dished out one card for a rather late tackle right on half time for which there could be few complaints. Outstanding, probably the best I've seen in Scotland this season.

Dundee 0-2 Motherwell - Bobby Madden

The romance of the cup duly sent Motherwell to their sixth cup tie of the season against a top flight opponent however our record is superb and we enhanced that today.

Bobby Madden had a tough afternoon of it as Dundee seemed to target Nadir Ciftci for some 'treatment', if ever a game highlighted the benefit of rugby union's rule that the referee can say to the captain if any of you do that again, I'm booking them as they seemed to take it in turns to give him a subtle boot or trip.

McHugh was booked for a tackle that ended up with him in a heap in the floor and immediately after the first goal, Ciftci ploughed through the guy who took the centre and was given a sly boot from an irate Dundee player, both correctly booked. For a while it threatened to bubble out of control but Madden managed to calm it down before the half time whistle went and he had a much easier second half.

Other than that Motherwell had one disallowed for offside, our seats at central behind the goal made it very hard for me to make a judgement.

I didn't agree with every decision Madden made but to his immense credit he had a game that about 35 minutes that looked was going to become a kicking contest but he managed to arrest it and some football even broke out too and he deserves great credit for that. But if a team are going to just niggle the same player every time they get the ball, the referee needs help to clamp down on that as none of the fouls were worthy of a yellow but it happening again and again leads to that one guy becoming immensely frustrated.

Back to Dens in a fortnight but a tough game with Kilmarnock next Saturday to come first.

Motherwell 0-1 Kilmarnock - Steven McLean

This is the first time Motherwell and Steven McLean's paths have crossed on league business this season. Both sides had a very attacking line up and the first 35 minutes were very open as both teams set about getting the opening goal but both sides were curtailed by a combination of good defending and making poor choices once in and around the box.

Motherwell had a penalty claim for a foul on Ciftci. Down the far end from me and the claims seemed fulsome and the fall looked genuine but nigh on impossible for me to say with any certainty if McLean was correct or not.

Kilmarnock scored in 35 minutes after their right back pounced on a really slack pass and rifled a low drive into the bottom corner from about 25 yards. The game changed immediately as Kilmarnock became a bit deeper and tried to spring a counter from the D.

Motherwell had two penalty claims in the second half, one for a tug and one for a tackle on Main but for me, the first one looked like six and two threes and the second one looked like a clean tackle and I had no complaints about his decision not to blow his whistle. I've heard from a man with strong claret and amber tinted spectacles that both were stonewallers from the TV highlights but I've not yet had the luxury of a rerun and until I do, I remain content with McLean's call.

Four yellows throughout though the futility of booking the Kilmarnock goalkeeper for timewasting at 93:45 when four minutes had been added on and blowing for full time as soon as his subsequent punt had pounced was not lost.

Overall I thought McLean was good, unfussy, let the game flow and only resorted to whistle or card when he had to.

Motherwell 2-1 Hearts - Andrew Dallas

Decent performance from Dallas, I'm glad I watched the TV coverage before commenting on the game though as I was sure there were two or three things he got completely wrong but on the replay he was right.

The first was a disallowed goal by Cadden - disallowed because he kicked it out the keeper's hands when he was in control. At the game the ball looked like it was all moving all the time which made it appear McLaughlin did not have a hand on ball and ball was touching the turf but when you see the replay you can see that he did and the free kick was correct.

Seconds later he gave a free kick to Hearts at the edge of our box - again it looked like a good tackle but the replay shows Aldred caught the Hearts player on the ankle and the foul and yellow card was another correct call.

In the seventh minute Motherwell went ahead after Hearts defended a corner very poorly.

McHugh was booked correctly for a poor foul, a yellow that keeps him out the semi final. Kyle Lafferty was very lucky not to follow suit for a poor foul right in front of the dugout. Half time came and Dallas was roundly booed off but perhaps a little misguidedly.

Second half and his early decision was to give Hearts a penalty as he tripped Naismith - as clear as they come, tackled with the wrong foot and was late. Naismith was booked for dissent with ten to go (correctly) and Adao was cautioned for a mistimed tackle on McHugh which seemed harsh as it was just two guys going in hard for a loose ball.

McHugh then scored a worldy to win it three minutes from the end. Adao was very lucky not to go for a bath a few seconds before the other 21 after a late lunge towards Main - he actually played the ball cleanly but I thought he was off the ground and not in complete control of his body. But it made no difference to the outcome as the final whistle went before MOtherwell took the throw in they had instead been awarded.

For all Dallas did reasonably well with the big decisions, his nitpicking over yardage for the sake of a couple of inches when taking a dead ball, his complete unwillingness to play advantage and that he seemed to let Steven Naismith referee most of the second half for him just showed him to be weak and although he got the big decisions right yesterday he just doesn't convince that he is comfortable.

However at the end of the day, semi final two and Hampden trip four for the season which is an outstanding effort for a wee club with a 3-4k fanbase that could very easily have been relegated last year. My wee team have been brilliant this year and we seem to have found a group of players who chase every lost cause and give nobody any time on the ball - as a fan they're just the most likable bunch of players because they play the way the fans would.

Hamilton Accies 2-0 Motherwell - Don Robertson (Steven McLean was originally appointed but this was changed on Saturday - don't know why)

I didn't see either the start or the end of this game and the 75 minutes or so I did see did little to raise much cheer. The turnstyles were the first shambles to be witnessed as our hosts left us to queue for about 25 minutes to get in during a rainstorm that was pretty heavy.

When we did get in, we'd only just got comfortable when the Accies hit the front. We made a hash of defending a corner and their new Greek forward backheeled it home. Hamilton looked more determined and won every second ball but other than a standard booking for LEwis Ferguson, Robertson was largely not seen.

The pattern continued after the break although Motherwell did improve a little. Kipre was booked for a late tackle, another simple call. Motherwell's tepid attacking was supplemented by McHugh giving the ball away in midfield and as Templeton made for the goal he could have fouled him but Robertson played an advantage which Templeton tucked into the bottom corner.

As that point, with a near the front seat and the rain not relenting meaning I was getting wet and Motherwell playing like the 2014/15 edition I decided my afternoon would be better spent in Bar West than watching any more of the game and I am pleased to report I had a pint of Amstel in my hand before the full time whistle.

Very much like the last time, I thought Robertson was excellent.

This was an excellent game for 40 minutes, swinging both ways and I thought we were edging it. The game changed when Kipre was sent off for violent conduct. It looked like very little in the ground and the replays haven't changed my mind, Thomson's indication of a stamp is clearly nonsense.

The game then descended into a training game with Celtic swinging the ball from side to side, occasionally venturing into the penalty box and creating a half chance now and then but struggling because Motherwell were so resolute at the back. One man's error turned an excellent game into a slog but I think in a way it's a win win for us as we've gained a point against all off and kudos for our organisation.

SHame for Craig Thomson is that other than that he actually had a decent enough game - were a few fouls I thought he should have given Main and Dembele as they were held but he was consistent with these jostles and in that regard I can't argue.

We have appealed the red card but I really don't see how we will win it. Yes the suggestion of a stamp is nonsense, however Kipre does kick out with his leg into Scott Brown and no matter the force the intent was there and I'm afraid Kipre has bought what Brown was offering there. The statistics on Craig Thomson this season are quite remarkable. Five red cards issued, all to Motherwell players and are our only red cards of the season. These include three in one game at Perth where one was appealed and won, and another denied on appeal that clearly to me shouldn't have been. The red against Kipre in the league cup final was also very harsh. Quite astonishing coincidences.

Two of those red cards though were clearly on the instruction of the assistant referee.

His five are not our only five as Stephen Finnie sent off Charles Dunne at Dingwall in the League Cup and Andrew Dallas sent off Peter Hartley post match v Hamilton - both correctly, I may add!

Tribunal outcome: Cédric Kipré (Motherwell) appeal upheld, reduced to yellow card.

The incident:

I fully agree with the Tribunal's decision.

I’m really surprised at the outcome of the appeal.
