This maybe needs a sticky... Stirling 0-2 Motherwell - David Munro As well as becoming acquainted with many of the new Motherwell signings and trialists, I spent much of the first half looking at my teamsheet to try and remember which player was wearing which number in the mid-20s. Other than a couple of dubious handballs the game was a bit barren of decisions for Mr Munro to make. If being a bit picky there were a couple of advantages that could have been played that weren't. He refereed the game with a smile on his face ad without issues. Decent but untesting. |

Edinburgh City 1-2 Motherwell - Gavin Duncan It's a long time since I've watched Motherwell at a ground where you are watching at eye level and are able to wander round to the other side of the ground at half time but that's what happened here. The game was played at the home of Spartans, Ainslie Park and to be honest the astroturf the game was played on was not conducive to good football. Motherwell dominated for long spells but toiled to create the good chances they required to put their opponent to the sword. In fact a nice move from Edinburgh City was the closest we came to a goal as a shot flashed passed our goal. As for the young Mr Duncan, he didn't have much to do and was keen to be reticent on the whistle and did an excellent job of letting the game flow. In fact he was very adept at playing advantages and in the first half I've got to say he was never noticed other than when he rather flamboyantly signaled the advantage. If I was being picky that one instance probably should have seen a caution but nobody was too upset that he didn't reach for his pocket. Second half and he had no choice but to book Craig Thomson (the disgraced former Hearts right back, not the referee) for scything down Elliot Frear. He then probably joined the rest of us in watching on in disbelief as one hoof beat the whole Motherwell defence and Grimes shook off McManus before tucking a shot passed Carson to give Edinburgh the lead. Cadden equalised shortly afterwards and with fifteen minutes to go you expected a Motherwell onslaught but for all we pressed our second division opponents, the kitchen sink was never really flung. Another yellow card for the other Edinburgh full back for a similarly mistimed tackle on Cadden could not be questioned. And then Motherwell nicked a winner at the death as the otherwise disappointing Frear got himself into a position to capitalise on any defensive error, and when one duly followed Motherwell had the three points and sealed qualification. Gavin Duncan then played what seemed like an eternity of injury time, probably correctly based on a couple of cramp stops for struggling Edinburgh players who put their all into matching their full time opponents and to be honest both Edinburgh City and Gavin Duncan have a lot more to be pleased with about their performances than the victors but when we look at how the other Premiership teams have faired on the road, Motherwell picked up a win others haven't been managing. Hope to see Gavin Duncan make a Premiership breakthrough in the future as he looked very competent and assured in this performance. |

As an aside, I also think this game may be the first one where all 22 players who started and the referee were younger than me! |

Motherwell 1-0 Berwick Rangers - Stephen Finnie Not a dissimilar game to the one against Edinburgh City where Motherwell dominated for long spells but had lots more crosses than clear cut chances and they had to wait until seven minutes from the end for the winning goal. Stephen Finnie refereed the game sensibly (as you would expect of someone of his experience). He dished out a standard caution about 20 minutes from the end to one Berwick defender who mistimed a tackle as someone (can't remember who) sprung forward. His other decision was to disallow a Motherwell goal which bounced about but he judged there was a little too much pressure on the goalkeeper - seemed a bit soft but one that referees frequently give. Whichever lucky referee gets our game with Rangers next week will undoubtedly have more of a test. |

Motherwell 1-2 Rangers - Bobby Madden Football's a funny game sometimes. I've heard people of claret and amber persuasion frothing at the mouth about the Rangers penalty which won them the game. Certainly wasn't the most obvious infringement but Moult led with the elbow though there wasn't much force in it - enough there to give Madden a valid reason to point to the spot. I've heard others moaning he didn't point to the spot and a handball by Lee Hodson. It's certainly one some referee somewhere will blow for this season but for me he was too close and his hand was close enough to a normal place to consider it an infringement. Where we maybe have more of a grievance is a push on Bowman inside the Rangers area. A bit like the one we conceded in that it wasn't the most obvious or forceful but it was an infringement. But I can't get too upset because we missed chance after chance - and not just half chances, these were gifts and if you can't take these or even two of them you cannot moan about the referee making perhaps one mistake. His bookings for Dunne, Moult, Cardoso, Heneghan, Dorrans and Tait were all correct. He could and should have given Moult a second one for a silly desperate late slide tackle at the edge of the box but decided on a final warning - a warning heeded by the Motherwell dugout who had the subby board up before you could say 'No More Louis'. Assistant in front of me did make a shocker of a call giving a goal kick instead of a throw due to acute dozing which led to him being yards behing play. Concentration lapse ended with him having to guess and when he did, he guessed wrong - and it wasn't especially close. Mixed day for the officials all in but I just cannot stop thing of these chances and how we really should have taken a point from this one. |

And my dislike of Mr Thomson is well documented on these boards. Nothing I saw yesterday changes my opinion. Edited to add we have had 4 :red: in a week. I believe we could win appeals on 3 of them. McHugh we cannot appeal anyway as it is 2 yellows but the other three are worthy of discussion. Edited by Steelman, Sunday, 13. August 2017, 23:15.

BBC highlights here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40835319 Just to avoid being called out for it, I have absolutely no argument with the two yellows for McHugh. |

One red card overturned on appeal. Charles Dunne free to play this Saturday. Still think Dunne's other :red: at Ross County is harsh and Carson's is borderline. I guess we move on and hope decisions go more in our favour in the coming weeks. |

I thought the one at Ross County was an absolute stick on red card. The one with the goalie I haven't seen a shot that is conclusive either way but doubt we could really argue Thomson et al made a clear error. |

Not been at out last couple of games due to other commitments but have watched our game with Hearts back on BBC Alba as live last night and watched a fair bit of Scottish football today. Some observations... Motherwell 2-1 Hearts - John Beaton Seemed to do pretty well, couple of penalty appeals, one for handball and one for a push, I think both correctly knocked back. Motherwell had two goals disallowed. Second was for offside and pretty blatant. The other was cleared off the line or thereabouts by a retreating defender. Not a single camera has provided any conclusivity as to whether it was in or not and given there were three players between assistant and goal line from the cross, it would have been impossible to give it. May have been in but with a naked eye cannot criticise team. Partick 3-4 Aberdeen - Bobby Madden Gave Aberdeen one penalty, probably should have given another one and Niall Keown's first yellow could and should have been a straight red. Celtic 1-1 St Johnstone - William Collum Lots of criticism being meted out by the Celtic faithful but from the BBC highlights package he seems to have got the big calls right. MacLean was onside for the Saints goal, the Celtic penalty claim for handball was at short distance and hand in a natural place and for all it looked like MacLean lamped someone he really did only run into him. Dundee 1-1 Hibernian - Don Robertson What an enjoyable lively game this was. Bit of dubiety of the Dundee penalty with claims Rory Deacon dived, I think he lost his balance trying to ride a ridiculous tackle and the penalty award was correct and to be fair neither Whittaker or Lennon have grumbled much but contact was minimal. Stokes barging of the keeper could have seen red but I think leniency was probably OK here. Ross County 1-3 Rangers - Craig Thomson Two not nice looking tackles that could have been dangerous free kicks or penalties but on replays, both were clean and Thomson did well to play on. However I think Davies should have been sent off for an elbow leading tackle towards the end of the first half. Given this guy's keenness to brandish red when we had him a couple of weeks ago, the irony of his leniency was not unnoticed. However this game will forever be remembered for the second Rangers goal which was Dublin and Given all over again. A Nick Hancock Christmas DVD awaits... Kilmarnock 2-2 Hamilton - Andrew Dallas Late penalty for Hamilton was spot on, nothing else involving him made the highlights package. |

Motherwell 2-0 Kilmarnock - Bobby Madden The mighty 'Well are on the march! As for young Bobby, he had a good enough game. Not that long since we had him against Rangers and the home faithful had not forgotten he had given them a penalty and denied us a couple of decent shouts. That meant every time Killie got a softish decision the cries of derision rang round Fir Park. However he didn't have much to do in a first half that struggled to build much beyond turgid. He did book Kipre for a rash tackle and for which he can have no complaints. Second half and Motherwell upped the tempo and made some attacking amendments from the bench. Kilmarnock conceded a foul at the edge of the D for a blatant drag back and I was surprised that Madden didn't reach for his shorts pocket. Bigirimana played a delightful ball for Ryan Bowman to whack home for 1-0. As the game progressed Motherwell had to make some subs and the balance of the team changed which led to Liam Grimshaw on his second debut making a silly tackle in nomansland that Madden had little choice but to book him for. During the second half there were a couple of loud cheers looking for penalties, one at each end. Neither time did Madden move and to be fair no players claimed either. But a couple of minutes from the end he did give us a penalty as a retreating defender (Taylor) tackled through Bowman to deny him a tap in. Was an attempt to play the ball though so correctly didn't go red with the new rules from last season. When Moult rifled home the spot kick, the three points were pocketed. Stevie Hammell is a wily old professional and as Motherwell chased a third in stoppage time, when the Killie break progressed he curtly ended it and the inevitable yellow card appeared. Was a physical game this and Bobby Madden enhanced it as a spectacle by allowing players to tackle and I think they enjoyed being able to play that way. Very good. |

Motherwell 3-0 Partick Thistle - Greg Aitken I've been on holiday for a couple of weeks so have missed the performances of Cook, Clancy and Walsh. When I've seen Greg Aitken before, I've always thought he has been south of hopeless, randomly giving fouls and cautions and generally it being a bit of a lottery what he was going to do with some tackles. Today, however I thought he was much better but a little lenient however unlike previous visits, he knew what a foul was and read the game much better. Minute 5 and he had a big decision as Moult fed Bowman who was cleaned out by the Thistle goalie as he rounded him just outside the box. He opted to go yellow which I felt was the right decision as I think Bowman had pushed the ball too far wide for him to give DOGSO. He booked Barton for a late tackle later in the half which was another good call. Second half and he was lenient on three tackles. Campbell for us and the Thistle number 5 and Barton again should all have been carded but he settled for a word on all three occasions. Finally Cadden was tackled late on and went down and grabbed the ball (a pet hate of mine, even when my own team are doing it). I applaud Aitken for not been bullied into giving us a foul, but I wish he had booked Cadden for the handball as to me that is as bad a form of cheating as diving. However, much improved from his previous trips to see us. And as a PS, Motherwell were superb again today. We have a really exciting team this year and I think we could be pushing Europe if we can keep everyone fit. |

Hamilton Accies 1-2 Motherwell - Craig Thomson Certainly less controversial than the last time we had him - thought he was broadly OK today. I thought he missed some fouls both ways and there was maybe a red card for a DOGSO against an Accies player right at the end although we broke so quickly Thomson wasn't miles ahead of me in the stand so I don't blame him at all for giving nothing. Thought he did very well to calm it down the couple of times it looked like it was maybe going to bubble over. I don't really rate him that highly but to be fair his man management skills are always excellent and are the reason he has got the appointments he has over the years, and he showed them today. Decent performance from Thomson, Motherwell deserved the win and that plastic pitch should be consigned to a bin somewhere - it's awful. |

League Cup Semi Final Rangers 0-2 Motherwell - Steven McLean So my wee team have made it to a final for the first time since 2011. To say I am a happy camper this morning would be an understatement. After a few little beverages last night, I headed home from the local hostelry and watched the game in full again. From section G5 of Hampden, I thought Steven McLean was OK, having seen it back he actually missed quite a lot. No problem with his early bookings for Bowman and Hartley and generally his first half showing was OK. However in the second half he missed Bowman elbowing someone and someone from their team elbowing Moult. Neither were even penalised and both should have had at least a yellow card and bearing in mind Bowman had already been booked we dodged a bullet there. Already 1-0 up at that stage, playing with ten would have made the remaining 30 minutes incredibly nervy. However the reaction of the Rangers manager earned him a trip to the stands and our manager's reaction to his reaction sent him to the same place. 74 minutes in and the highlight of the game, season, three seasons - a through ball from Charles Dunne and Louis Moult ran onto it 20 yards from goal and delivered a scrumptious lob over Alnwick for 2-0. Rangers then lost all sorts of belief and a bit of discipline. Bruno Alves carrumped Moult and then kicked him when down, MOult reacted too and the ensuing melee he was flattened by a Rangers player too. Bizarrely Alves escaped sanction whilst the other two were cautioned - there was a case for three reds but Alves's was an absolute stick on, the other two you could argue yellow or red. The game petered out after that, one more booking for Cadden for dissent after he was penalised for catching someone with his instep. Rangers maybe have a grievance that Bowman stayed on, but as soon as they conceded they fell to bits and at the end 3-0 on the break looked more likely than 2-1 and I don't think many will grudge us our final. |

Having been happy with his appointment on the appointments thread, I must be honest and say McLean missed an awful lot. There is no doubt we were the beneficiaries of his ineptitude on more than one occasion. Mistakes were made which could have influenced the outcome either way and I do wonder if he left his red card at home. Having said all that, Rangers were rank, we were a bit better and took our chances. Roll on Hampden for the final. (and the first of three games in a week against Celtic, thankfully the final is first!) |

Dundee 0-1 Motherwell - Stephen Finnie Bit of a mixed bag for Mr Finnie last night. Motherwell scored with first move of note and Stephen Finnie started off well enough but allowed a fairly hard tackle on a marauding Frear go with just a warning when it really was a clear yellow card offence. But Deacon fouled Tanner a few minutes later as he broke from defence and was clattered and the yellow card was shown. A further booking for a fairly hefty tackle by a Dundee player down the far end followed. Tanner did Deacon a huge favour as when he was dragged back he continued running rather than falling or stopping which may well have forced Finnie into a red card for two yellows. Then came a pass back incident as McHugh fired the ball back and the Motherwell goalie inexplicably picked it up. Peter Hartley was booked for arguing about the decision. But Finnie took ages to allow the free kick to be taken as Motherwell players encroached, Dundee players barged through the wall and all sorts of shenanigans. It wasn't worth the wait as the Dundee attempt was poor and flew miles wide. The big moment of controversy was a Dundee goal was disallowed for pushing. A small subtle nudge but really not much in it and the hosts had a right to feel a bit aggrieved. A physical tackle by a Dundee player, a blatant bit of timewasting and a drag back by a couple of ours merited and were given cautions in the second half as the game calmed down and Finnie's authority was restored after a towsy and frustrating end to the first. I like Finnie but last night was the first time I've seen him struggle for a spell in a game but overall there was probably more good than bad. |

Motherwell 0-1 Hibernian - Bobby Madden Not the best game by a long chalk and despite my fellow 'Well fans lambasting Madden I thought he was OK. A grudge remains because of some decisions he made in our game with Rangers back in August. This game included two of the most ridiculous foul throws ever seen that would make you think you were at a primary school and both penalised. Only caution was for Allan Campbell for a late tackle, a good few minutes later as he played an excellent advantage and the ball stuck for a bit. There were some fouls in the midfield that could have gone the other way and seemed soft but nothing game changing. My one bugbear was that he seemed happy to let Hibs players subtly waste time kicking the ball away, he then speaks to them indicating he has seen it but these really should be cautions - I see Hamilton had a player sent off (second yellow) for exactly the same. Not perfect but competent. |

Any thoughts on the penalty given by Grant Irvine in the Berwick v Cowdenbeath game, for a player trying to head the ball while almost on the ground and making contact with an opponent. |

Motherwell 1-1 Celtic - Willie Collum Outstanding for 88 minutes then gave Celtic a present of a penalty which changed the outcome of the game. After the kick in the gut Thomson gave us on Sunday this one was incredibly hard to take. Can't describe it so will just leave it here. https://twitter.com/CelticLisboa/status/935994517781712899 |
