David Webb refereed Blackpool v Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Fair enough, I had forgotten that. Just seems like yet more lack of forward planning with the appointments. When they knew Webb was towards the top of the merit table and sent him to two playoff contenders at home for his last two matches. Especially Blackpool last week when they were pretty likely to beat Leyton Orient and get into the playoffs. Havent got a problem seeing him again though. He is one the better referees we see at Brunton Park

Congratulations to all involved.

Seen Simon Hooper on the box a few times this season. I must admit when he was given a PL trial game based on what I had seen in the past then I was not sure about him. However, when I've seen him on some feisty championship clashes this season he's generally showed a great deal of common sense and a ability to really control and keep a lid on things well , he has impressed and based on what I seen deserves this wonderful appointment. Best of luck to him and his team.

L2 play off semis very interesting , I had thought maybe Dean for the Final so will be interesting to see who gets it now. Wouldn't be surprised to see Darren England get it in view of his recent appointments.

Not seen David Webb before , though remember reading he was on the talent group a few years back, one for SG2 in future perhaps.

Congrats Simon and co!! Great offical in my opinion, who is only getting better with age and experience. My prediction would be Darren England for the final despite his young age or maybe even a Oliver Langford.

Yes, I wonder whether this will be Nigel's swansong. In a way, I hope it is. I'm sure he won't get a Playoff Final now and it would be good if he could bow out at the top with a Playoff Semi (as with Andy D'Urso) rather than carrying on and ending up having to retire through injury. And at 57, he has certainly put one across for the 'golden oldies'. Will we ever see anyone that old again on the FL? I wonder :sherlock: Good luck to Nigel and to David and their teams.

Congrats too to Simon Hooper. A good ref who gets on with his job with the minimum of fuss. Enjoy your day at Wembley! :cheer:

I mean this in the nicest possible way but I do hope it is his swansong! There are kids playing in the FL who are young enough to be his grandchild & he's rather too near to the age where one could even be a great grandchild!! (if subsequent generations all had their first child at 16!) That is a rediculous scenario in a professional league. It's really time for him to go and be a good role model in his local leagues and give the younger refs a chance to progress up the ladder, something they cannot do when the limited number of spots are being occupied by those who are certainly no longer ones for the future!

Playing devil's advocate however:

He's passed the fitness tests and clearly achieves excellent marks from both clubs and observers; why should we be praying for his retirement, preventing him from refereeing in the present just because he won't be part of the long-term future?

I was about to post something similar.
He is a role model for all the youngsters to work at their officiating by being able to maintain his ability and fitness beyond the 'normal' age.
It's up to the youngsters to force him out of the top whatever number of officials selected to continue at that level by their own ability and fitness on merit.

I can accept that & I didn't say he wasn't up to it however we have a chronic shortage at the top of youngsters coming through. We desperately need those youngsters coming through now & gaining experience/developing at the higher levels. I expect Tierney & Attwell to replace Marriner & Atkinson (both on a 1yr extension) on the FIFA list in December of this year but who is there to come after them? I throw a fit everytime Hungary enforce their retirement at 45 rule, Gábor Erös last December & Péter Solymosi & Zsolt Szabó, this coming December because I feel it's a waste of decent experienced officials but the plus side is they get replaced by youngsters who are developing in the NB2 & doing AAR duties in the NB1 for experience & development.

I am with bmb on this one.

Most of the posters here mention every time that England doesn't fill their FIFA spaces. Since the age limit is 38 and most of the SG referees have passed that limit, how are they going to do that? The answer is simple. Bring fresh blood. Same here.

Edy, I am informed that 38 is still the limit for FIFA newcomers, but how is it possible to jump into the FIFA list being 41 yo? I mean Aleksandar Vasić from Serbia. Can you explain this?

Tbh, I can't. The only occassion when a referee can take the FIFA badge over the age of 38 is if he was FIFA in the past. But I don't believe that this applies here, unless I am mistaken.

Even if he has an average, or slightly below average, game, that will represent an improvement on his last PlayOff Final at Wembley.

I can find no indication that Nigel Miller refereed his final game at Bloomfield Road last Sunday, so perhaps he's aiming to carry on! Luton Town were not apparently very chuffed with his performance but it is perhaps refreshing to note that Luton boss Nathan Jones "did not want to blame Nigel for his side's defeat" (via Google). One to watch but perhaps Nigel is aiming to get to 60 before hanging up his boots. Shades of Stanley Matthews in the 1960s!

Makes Grandad Walton's retirement seem rather early given how long we have had Milller in the EFL!! :ott:

Excellent appointment for Darren England and absolutely well deserved... Congratulations to him and here's wishing that the match goes brilliantly for him... Hopefully he will be a SG2 referee before long after several consistent performances this season!!! :cheer:
