seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding wayne barnes performance yesterday. there was a controversial French substitution late in the game when slimani came back on for uini atonio, when slimani was already subbed earlier I was wondering if this was allowed. there may have been a bite on George north, which went to the tmo but the footage was inconclusive and the officials chose to leave it. there was also an appeal for a penalty try by the French in the 79th minute.

Strange game although I don't think Wayne Barnes can be blamed. Obviously, Rugby Union still has roll on roll off subs so he was well in his right the French lad to come back on. The physio said there was a head injury, and on the new guidelines, the referee has to act on that and let the medic take him off for assessment.
What happened next was totally ridiculous and poor sportsmanship from the French, deliberately holding up the game for 20 minutes in order to score a try. They deliberately forced Wales into giving away scrums and penalties so the game dragged on and Wales grew even more tiresome. I'm not sure Barnes could have done anything different except continue on. Of course it is not over until the ball is kicked into touch.

Regarding the North "bite", I think he was bitten, but the TMO couldn't get the match footage, and it was inconclusive anyway, so the match should have just carried on and left for the RFU to take appropriate action on Monday morning!
No ref, no game!

Rugby Union doesn't have Roll On - Roll off subs, however it is acknowledged that only people skilled to be in the front row can play there. Therefore there is a system where by players who have been subbed who are front row players can be brought back on if someone is injured or sin binned, and therefore stop uncontested scrums (a la a rugby league scrum) from having to take place.

The issue yesterday was the French prop was going to be penalised as soon as Mr Barnes went on his side of the scrum as he was out of his depth and the French realised this. It is alleged that a member of the French management team left the technical area to see the doctor (who is separate for this very reason of impartiality), who then ran onto the pitch stating that the said player had a head injury. The player who had been substituted had been warming up for the previous 5 minutes so that obviously rang alarm bells to some

Mr Barnes didn't really buy it, asking "are you telling me this player needs a HIA (Head Injury Assessment)" to which the doctor replies "yes" and Mr Barnes says "ok then". This player then walks unaccompanied down the tunnel when if he had a suspected Head Injury he should have been under supervision

At this point Mr Barnes hands are tied, he cannot go against medical advice, so what does he do next? Well he could just say to himself, "I know they've cheated here, I'll just ping them and get the game over". Well spirit of the game probably suggests that isn't a bad thing, BUT, its not in the laws of the game and Mr Barnes' work outside of Rugby refereeing is a barrister so he's not going to do that.

Also, with the Rugby authorities making their World Cup draws ludicrously early, had Wales won and Ireland lost, then Ireland would have been in Pool 3 of the draw so the result of the fixture didn't just affect the 2 teams involved or places in the 6 nations.

The time clock was further exacerbated when a Welsh prop was sin binned, it took time to establish whether the original prop had gone off injured or not injured, a phrase that the French 5th official couldn't understand which led to Mr Barnes having to try and converse in French, very successfully, with him.

The Welsh prop looked to have gone off injured, but wasn't recorded as such, and therefore he had to be brought back from the dressing room to take over as prop, which led to the extra time added. If he had gone off as injured then an uncontested scrum would have taken place, thereby nullifying what the French were trying to do.

The time clock also ran when video footage was checked to see if George North had been bitten, again inconclusive evidence went against the Welsh as had there been some the game would have ended then. He was quite clearly bitten as his arm showed.

I would suggest that had this been throughout the 80 minutes the clock would have been stopped but as they were in "Red time", what was the point.

As a final point, what an awful question from the touchline reporter Sonja McLaughlin to the the Welsh Captain Alun Wyn Jones in the post match touchline interview, just 3 minutes after the game "Did the French cheat at the end there?". At least he managed to keep his dignity, something Ms McLaughlin clearly lacks.

Footnote to OP - France were claiming a penalty try as Wales conceded 7 penalties in that 20 minutes overtime, generally on the 3rd one a Penalty Try gets awarded, however, Mr Barnes stated that France were not trying hard enough to maintain the scrum - (my words now) and were therfore effectively just trying to get the penalty count up to get the penalty try
