Good to see Drysdale and Ilderton returning for their first middles of the season. With Lee Swabey having a 4O last weekend, I think this only leaves Messrs Brown, Hill, Russell (? retired?) and Sutton without appointments this season (Wright having retired)

Mick Russell - Retired and now FL Observer
Mark Brown - Not refereed FL in 2015/2016. Possibly injured?
Keith Hill - Not refereed FL in 2015/2016. Possibly injured?
Gary Sutton - Not refereed FL since September 2015

Without looking it up I expect Mr Huxtable refereed Plymouth Argyle recently and did so in a manner most displeasing to plym_Nick. He may or indeed may not have had a terrible match but if he did it does not mean of course that he then cannot go on and have a good one somewhere else. Every referee who has ever blown a whistle will tell you about a nightmare match which they completely bogged up and then followed by a run of good ones. It certainly happened to me on more than one occasion.

Of the list of non appearing referees. Mick Russell has indeed retired and is now an Observer. Is it really the case that Keith Hill did not referee at all last season ( 2015/16 ). I must say I thought I had seen him at the beginning of this year ( 2016 ) but I am now ancient and the temporal memory plays tricks, perhaps it was beginning of 2015.

m'learned friend nemesis will , I think, mourn the loss to active FL refereeing of Mick Russell but were Keith Hill to have refereed his last FL match then I do not think that would be an occasion for m'learned friend to be subject to a spontaneous outpouring of grief. Upton tells me that Keith Hill joined the National List in 1998, so he has had a good run and gets a long service award if nothing else. ( I fear this may be the opportunity for somewhat of a barbed comment ! )

You are not mistaken, Whistleblower, Keith Hill regularly featured last season, in fact I saw him myself on two occasions. I suspect the original poster meant to say 2016/17 instead, as with Mark Brown who also appeared many times last season.

Looking up Keith Hill's allocated games, it's interesting that he was given eleven Championship fixtures in 2015/16, which suggests (rightly or wrongly!) a degree of confidence in him by the powers that be, but he clearly either wasn't offered or declined a place in SG2. If the former, perhaps that might explain why, at 48, unless he is actually injured, he might have decided to retire.

My understanding with Keith Hill is that it is a fitness rather than a retirement issue at present but I have no idea at all about his intentions. Although some don't like his style I believe he has always been well regarded by the appointing powers. I would have thought he was one of the chief contenders for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final ( or whatever its current manifestation is; the one where a long serving FL referee gets to officiate at Wembley ) so if he does not continue then he can count himself unfortunate not to have received that honour.

On the pitch he always comes over as somewhat authoritarian I think but I heard him speak at a gathering once and he appeared rather quiet and mild in manner.

For reasons I have mentioned on here before I certainly do not mourn the departure of Mick Russell.

I do find Keith Hill a little fussy for my taste, but I can't say I've ever had a real issue with him.

I share your sentiment about the Checkatrade Trophy Final (or whatever the JPT Trophy is called now), but having seen the appointments so far, it would not surprise me if a SG2 or even an 'older' SG1 ref gets the Final this season

Keith was absent a few seasons back whilst training refs in Japan (I think it was). Presumably his recent absence is not for the same reason? :sherlock:

I've seen him a couple of times already this season, and he always seems to officiate in a very undemonstrative but efficient style, "a safe pair of hands" usually sums him up well.

Having said that, I saw the Fulham v. Reading game last Saturday where he showed four yellow cards and a straight red to the visitors, so it's possible he may not have too many fans currently in the Berkshire area!

Kevin Wright was the referee's observer at Spotland tonight. He was sat at one end of the posh seats with David Allison sat at the other end.

Surprisingly, it's the first time I've seen Mr Wright out of the centre circle...

Referee friend from the USA was at Craven Cottage on Saturday & was very impressed with him. Said all the cards were spot on & he was pleased to see dissent being clamped down on.

He was the first referee to give bmb jr a cuddle! A few weeks before Junior was born I was taken to hospital from a match as they thought I was in labour, held up the start of the 2nd half because the ambulance was blocking the players tunnel - Peter Walton was ref! A couple of weeks after Jr was born he was at the newly opened Dean Court, saw me with jr and ran over for a cuddle - with the baby not me! Only 2 times I actually 'met' the guy!

Saw Ilderton today and he didn't appear fit - more out for a gentle stroll. The question of keeping up with play was not on the agenda.

Keith Hill does (or did) work for Hertfordshire FA. It is surprising how many refs who work for county FA's in various capacities seem well favoured in their appointments and get through the various steps of promotion quite quickly. Of course I am not being slightly sarcastic when I say that!

I saw the highlights on Goal Rush and it looks as though Eddie has put on a few pounds since he last refereed on the FL. Not quite Slim Phil but..... And was that a beard he was sporting or was it just the shadows? I can understand if Eddie is not back to full fitness and optimum weight yet. If he had been refereeing from the start of the season, he would presumably have had a number of PSF's in the summer heat to get to optimum fitness and shed the pounds, but the summer is long past and there are not a lot of friendlies around at the moment. I am sure he will be back to full fitness before long. Interesting that Darren Drysdale (at Leyton Orient) looked as thin and fit as when we last saw him at the end of last season.
