Thats good to here they work well in your mk4, how long have you had them and do you think they'll hold up after a bunch of k's? |

no problem, and thanks for the extra info. I was pulling my hair trying to figure out how I could go even lower with mine after seeing the pics, but hearing you raised it some after makes sense. Totally agree about the bmw, mine looks similar to the blue jetta, a little higher, and thats with h&r sportlines in it, and it rides/handles really well, but 200km/h+ dips in the road I do notice, but its still not anywhere near as bad as when my rocco bottoms out. I literally had my steering wheel jump out of my hands, but im thinking the limited slip diff made that worse. The only ways I've seen that would work to help out with mk1 slamming issues are this and this guy My only concern again is LCA/tie rod geometry and cv joints, but old skool does have a tie rod flip kit, . I know he uses VAG components in his drop mounts. I think he even has shortened oil pans for those who need them. Good guy to talk to. If anyone has any info on shorter drive shafts, let me know. I'm not sure where exactly you guys are on this post but it's pretty straight forward. The amount of money you pay for the suspension is the quality you will receive. Yes some coils that are $1000 dollars still ride like shit but some that are the same price that don't. You have to look at the over all r&d put into the suspension components in general. Assess your car and determine its purpose and your over all budget. Its a no brainer to think cheap coils will ride like complete shit slammed. Most coilovers compress the spring thus lowering your car without leaving you any way to absorb any bump. Even $1200 dollar HK silverlines compress the spring and alter your height. I know most of you guys are away of how coil overs work and there is plenty of options to level our your control arms or even convert over to tubular control arms for a hefty penny. One thing a person should look into if you want lower but better ride is K-sports. The way they work is the actual strut threads within it self, which inturn lowers your car. You keep the stock spring height and it still rides and takes bumps way better. Also you can stiffen the shock to decide how much float you want to have. So in the end you can be "slammed" and have it ride nice. My k-sports were $1400 and change and my car is low. I tuck 205/50/15s to the middle of the rear sidewall off the fender. and I cut my fenders right to my flairs. It rides better then my brand new F150. It corners hard and with be able to adjust how hard or soft I want each corner it really helps be set my over all off the line launches. SO honestly, its not worth it to buy cheap coils to me. They are a waste. If it takes 3 or 5 months to save up for K-sports its worth it. Being low and having your car scrap the cross member and riding like balls is not. Just my opinion. Spend the money where it counts. Suspension, brakes and motor modifications will be the biggest purchuses of your toy or your daily, why short cut and go cheap when its just going to be harder on your car in the end? and jay your wrong, it does matter if your running $1500 dollar coils compared to $400, because cheap coil ride like shit. |

hey thanks for your post, and no i didn't really know where i was going with the tread either but this is my first attempt at slamming a mk1 and have seen alot of mk1's slammed on racelands so i thought the $300 i payed would be worth knowing first hand(hoping there was a small chance they'ed do the trick) how crappy they would be. But i already know way more than i did before thanks to your and other's informative posts and i like the sound of the k-sports, shortening the strut makes total sense for these cars. All in all i never really planed to do much to this car as its in pretty nice original cond, just want to ride low and slow with it and in some what decent comfort but i guess i'd have to raise it up to almost stock height to get that out of these, oh well i'll just run these until they're kaput then i'll try somthing else. |

Obviously nothing's free in this world doesn't apply in his world, but seriously you can't get a better deal then 300 and know one is going to sell quality suspension for less then 600 with a good amount of km on them. Sorry billy this isn't the okvw salvation army were you get a parts hamper once a month. Lol |

So true Jay, LOL. It wasn't that long ago when a basic shitty set of Neuspeed Sport springs that barely lowered the car were around $500, same springs from the same manufacturer except marketed under "Bugpack" went for $300. Complete adjustable coilovers for $300 not reasonable? I guess I'd agree with that: it's not reasonably cheap, it's ridiculously cheap Anyway, back on point: I like the look of the OP's Jetta with the RM's, I'm hazarding a guess that the "bone jarring" feel is probably the CV shafts slamming up against the body/frame, had that same problem with another mk1. I'm thinking about notching my cabby once I get my new wheels sorted out/finished building. Edited by BkoolB3, Aug 4 2011, 10:33 AM.
