I think the fixtures are set up for Stroud & Tanner to get games. I can see Jones being an 4O in a PL game.

However, it confirms my feeling that the two Lees will struggle to get PL gametime this season and this could affect their long term futures, Mason especially.

To be honest, I don't know why Tanner was put on the FIFA list ahead of Marriner. It's a shame, but I presume CHris Foy is too old now?

Interesting.

So third week in, with 30 games in total I'd expect every fit SG referee to have done a PL middle in this time. Yet the following officials haven't:

Probert, Tanner, Mason, Rennie, and of course Clattenburg.

I'd especially hope Tanner would be refereeing regularly being one of our 7 FIFA representatives.

Yet Dean, Riley, Atkinson, Webb have all done 3 middles after gameweek 3, all of Webb's being TV games. No sign of Attwell this week despite a confident PL start, but not unexpected. Premier League debut for Mike Jones, and first of the season for Stroud.

Let's hope in the next set of appointments Tanner, Mason, Probert all get PL outings to justify their positions on the Select Group, otherwise wouldn't it be better to give someone else a go? I wouldn't be surprised if these refs, particularly Mason who has yet to establish himself on the PL despite being on the list for 2 years now, struggle to get a run out this campaign.

I'm pleased with Martin Atkinson on our match. I'm sure he'll justify his 3rd middle of the season.

However, 5 refs, exeter_ref forgot to mention Chris Foy, will have had 3 middles and 5 none. We all know about Clatts & Rennie, but I'm amazed that Steve Tanner hasn't been included, despite being a FIFA ref! I suppose 4O at Chelsea v Spurs could be seen as a "sweetener", but still he'll have another 2 weeks before he may get a middle. I guess that won't exactly do wonders for his confidence.

I'm surprised that Mike Dean got the Boro game as surely this is the kind of game that should go to one of the newbies.

Keith Stroud has a rare outing, but whenever he gets an outing, he always has an established SG ref as 4O. Does that mean that they need to "babysit" him & that they don't have confidence in him to have an NL official as 4O?

Good game for Mike Jones, even though this was probably the ideal game for him.

Good TV games for Styles, Webb & Atkinson.

I'd have preferred a more balanced set, but it's early days. However, I'd be concerned if I was Mason, Probert & Tanner.

Atkinson is a safe appointment for the game I will be attending. I had hoped to see Mike Dean, as I really like him as a ref, but Atkinson is also a good appointment.

I do fear that we're going to see Webb, Webb and more Webb on TV this season. Would seem a shame as things were being spread around more after Poll left. While he may be the best, he won't be there for ever and others need an opportunity. The next two sets will be more interesting though, with Liverpool vs Man Utd and Chelsea vs Man Utd, both massive games.

Glad that Jones has got an appointment, need to get him started. But what of Mason and Probert and Tanner?

Slightly surprised Jones hasn't an experienced SG ref as 4th official to guide him along in the way that Attwell did last week.

Extremely disappointed that Mr Webb has yet another TV game, and yet another 'big' game. Why can't we try out some other officials on these sort of games like Riley, Styles, Tanner even. Especially after the reports I have heard about Mr Webb haven't been great the year.

I think, as has already been alluded to, that the powers that be think that, like Graham Poll, the sun shines out of Howard Webb's backside, and he can do no wrong and will get the majority of the top games like Poll used to.

Wrong IMO, because there are several extremely highly competent referees in the PL who are equally as capable as Howard Webb at handling such games.

Fair point, but I bet if it was one of the bigger names in SG refereeing, they would have been out on the Sunday. Even Jeremy Simpson who is one of Tanner's assistants is on the line for West Ham/Blackburn on Saturday. Similarly, Phil Sharp is out at 12:45 on Saturday at Southampton, and Mike Riley has a game tonight but is out on Saturday, so................... why wouldn't Tanner have a game?

I think Webb is now seen as our number 1 ref and he'll get the majority of our big games for many years, like G Poll before him.

His main challengers have either retired, (Poll) are on the wane & getting on, (Bennett, Riley, Wiley) aren't quite as good (Atkinson, Clatts, Dean) or are too young (Attwell, Oliver).

Where he differs from Poll is that I don't think he's as "pushy" & nor as high profile. I also believed that the Poll/Hackett relationship was a "marriage of convenience" as Hackett never really praised Poll to the skies in the same way that he's done with Webb. I always felt that Hackett felt compelled to "massage" Poll's ego, especially after the 06 World Cup debacle.

I believe that Hackett has a much better relationship with Webb, no doubt helped that both men are from the same part of the country.

I think Webb has the field to himself, certainly for the next few years. I just hope he doesn't get too complacent as his standards may suffer.

So the Rob Styles show rolls into town this weekend then! Shouldn't really complain, we have a decent record at home with him, and he has sent off 5 opponents in his 10 games. Still, we had a 100% record with Atkinson until last week!

Nice game for Jones to have on his introduction to PL life. I'm surprised Probert isn't getting games. Whenever I've seen the four black sheep, if you like, he's always impressed me the most.
