Go for it, unless pal were to somehow release the rest of the series within the year, you're not stepping on anything. |

Then I'll start looking into it. If any of you guys want to help out, let me know! Speaking of Pal, I know that he was getting help from someone on /m/ a while back (like last year) have any of us dropped him a line to see if he could use any help? I know he likes to be in charge of his projects, but he's had a pretty rough year and a half, and maybe he could use the help. |

There's a way to contact him that isn't twitter or a comment on his site? Guy is more 'reclusive' than Gao Soul Forever. I know one of sapphire's buddies at GUIS is desperately trying to contact him to offer him help with HQ soft subs. |

Well, he did (ironically) just release a new episodes today! So maybe hit him up on the comments section for the new release? I know he used to frequent one of the now-defunct toku boards out there. But he's around, just busy. |

oh august's old place the CK site links to? That was before my time. In any case FortMax was able to catch pal in between announcement tweets. He shot down the idea of making soft subs since it would indirectly lead to native japanese dling that and getting a clean copy. Which as far as arguments against soft subbing goes makes a lot more sense than the whole "they'll steal out scripts" argument. Still too bad

Dude, neither of those reasons makes any real sense. Why would Japanese downloaders download Japanese shows from non-Japanese uploaders in the first place? Or why download at all when they could just rent it from their local video store? And the ripping out of the scripts thing is also ridiculous, because it goes back to the unwarranted fear of someone stealing their scripts and passing them off as their own, which as far as I can tell has never happened in the history of fansubbing, and if it did, what would be the damage? Less site traffic? Fewer Facebook friends? Someone taking credit for something they didn't do and undeservedly enjoying the charmed life of an internet celebrity? Any way you slice it, it's needless paranoia. |

Actually, there's some precedent for Japanese IPs downloading english fansubs. I can see PAL's reasoning. As far as I'm concerned, we don't need scripts for a show that's competently subtitled. Groups like TVN aggravate me, because their sole reasoning for keeping scripts to themselves is so that no other groups can "tweak" them. The same reason why they put freeze frames into their encodes, meaning that I have to download a modded version VirtualDub just to make their releases work on my external media player. That honestly annoys me more, because a show like Hibiki could REALLY use some nice raws, and if we had scripts we wouldn't have to re-sub the entire project (like that one anon is doing with Shinkenger and MagiRanger) |

Oh yeah definitely, I think about a quarter of the people downloading Stronger are japanese ips. So even if the logic doesn't entirely make sense (I do agree with you on some aspects SSSSSSSCCCCCCISSSSSSSSSSSSOOORRRRSSSS) it still seems like a genuine concern he has with some slight basis over just TVN going crazy. also ahahaha wow I never knew that about the freeze frames, haven't run into them myself but ahahaha. I IRC with the shinkenanon (nice fellow, he thinks highly of you, if he ever dies you're getting all of his toys in the will ), he uses japasubs scripts as a basis but still puts a lot of effort to pretty much restructure the timing himself. |

Haha, I know him well. And I would let him... look at my toys. Just once! Otherwise, i want to be buried with them. But that's saying a lot! I didn't want to say anything specific about him, in case he wanted to stay anonymous. I plan on using his subs when I re-watch Shinkenger with my girlfriend and my daughter. TV-N's were... very hard to follow. |

Actually it's not surprising that people with japanese IPs download older series, as most of toei's older releases are sales only, so unless they really like a series and want to spend the high price toei asks for dvds this is the cheapest way to see older series. Video rental places in japan get most titles before they go on sale but typically get different versions that lack the special features, subtitles etc that are on sale versions of the same dvd. Since they get this they typically do not try to rent sales only titles otherwise they might find themselves no longer able to buy rental dvds and thus cut out of the early rental market. That's why if you look on japanese peer to peer you'll see titles that say something like R版 or レンタル版 meaning this is the rental version thus lacking all the bells and whistles of sales discs of movies. |
