So basically, I have this one big h264/mp3 .avi file to time and as you'd expect, even loading just the audio in aegisub took considerable amount of time in my old laptop. So I'm thinking maybe I can cut it into several parts to do individually. I know googling 'avi splitter' would give me bajillion results so I'm not sure which one to use. Anyone experienced in this? tl;dr I need a good tool to split a .avi file. Most preferably free. Any help would be appreciated

Don't think that's doable without completely re-encoding due to the way header data works. |

So uh, Pata, I don't exactly follow. Anyway, a stupid realization just hits me: I just need to rip the mp3 out and cut it into pieces with common tools. Duh. Now to figure out how to take the mp3 out. As usual, pardon my stupidity.

I'm a bit slow in understanding things, but you're not referring to demultiplexing (demuxing)... your not trying to seperate or split the video file from the audio file, right? So, basically you want to split the files into two or multiple avi's, right? or after demuxing the file audio you want to split the MP3 into multiple files. Am I right? Well, it can be done! I've done it once but forgot the full details since it was a long time ago... you either split the whole AVI files into multiple avi with smaller byte size and edit with your favorite apps or demux the file first... take the audio file into multiple mp3 files with smaller byte size... that way, loading the files won't take that long, but joining the multiple mp3 files must have all the same bitrate or settings so you won't have a problem with the header when they are being joined. Then you can Multiplex them together... Dual boot configuration and using Linux (ubuntu) as my primary OS. I'm using Mencoder for linux, but there's also a Mencoder for Windows and Mac and it's freeware! Mencoder is a more of a text base or command line enconding but I know there's a frontend (GUI) for mencoder... using the command line version won't take too much resource on your cpu than the frontend (gui) version... you can google mencoder documentation for more details or search youtube for tutorials... |
