Right, encoding guide. Be aware that there is no standard /m/subs way of doing it, each encoder has their own preferenceces, but this is what I use.
Just warning you that I use some unusual programs, and they are occasionally prone to throwing hissy fits.

My toolbox:
The AMVapp: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avt...eta/amvapp.html
ZarxGUI: http://www.mediafire.com/?cozurmokjdz
(This is a more recent version that the version in the AMVapp)

How to encode:

After installing the AMVapp, fire up Virtualdubmod
Open the wmv file, selecting the Directshowsource option in the open with Avisynth drop-down menu at the bottom. You'll have to show all files to see the wmvs.

Next, in Virtualdubmod, go into Tools->Script editor. This is the avisynth script that we use to do things to the video with. Most important thing here, is in the line with the Directshowsource (Directshowsource("your video file.wmv",fps=29.97) The fps bit tells it the framerate of the source, otherwise it has the bad tendency for the audio and video to slip of synch.

At this stage we can filter the footage if we so wish. As the Daitarn footage looks mostly okay, I'd just put in the line:
Deen("w3d",3,3,5)
Which removes some of the noise.

Now for encoding, load this avisynth file in ZarxGUI, select constant bitrate, 2 pass, bitrate of 1200. This will give a 233mb file once it all chugs through.

If you have any questions or difficulties, just ask.

There are no tears, there are no tears.
Everything went great, thank you for the tutorial!

Only thing that surprised me was that it took 3 hours to encode the mp4 even on my decent dual core pc. That normal?

Anyways, here you can get the retimed script ready for 2nd QC. You can watch it using the wmv raw.

I also added notes for the little stuff I changed so you guys can jump in and tell me what I shouldn't mess with next time. The lines star should at the very least check for translation are marked with "requesting second TL opinion!".

The ending has been timed, and I even translated four lines! I hope starseeker wants to fill in the rest, though it's not necessary if you don't feel like it. I'll just bug you for it again next episode ;).

Also timed the next episode preview, which is also optional for star to fill in. I thought it would be cool to add these extra bits of polish now that it's an official mSubs project. You know, like that one anon said, to make this more of a mid season fansub upgrade!

When you're done with the script throw it my way again and I'll mux and upload it for release using the mp4.

Yes 3 hours is normal. Be glad you weren't trying to deblock, and sharpen at the same time, once got a 17 hour encode of a Raideen episode on my dual core laptop.

I'll take a look at the script in the morning and sort out those lines.

For release I'd recommend adding a CQC to the filename (the 8 letter alphanumeric string you see on releases). You can find programs to do this easily online.

24h+ encodes were commonplace among us oldtimers XD

And it's "CRC" (cyclic redundancy check)

Yay typos, although sometimes close quater combat on some of my encodes has been bloody tempting.

24 hour encodes, that's insane! Seems I got no reason to complain then.

And it's close "quarters" combat (CQC). :P

Can't wait to see how this will look like once it's all done. Keep up the good work, guys! :)

As for the translation, don't worry about keeping my translation, you can throw it out altogether if you don't think it's good enough. As I said once before, I understand absolutely no Japanese (except for the odd words here and there I picked up after years of watching subbed anime, but I doubt that counts), and I translate from the Italian translation. I've been told that it's close enough, but the definition of "close enough" may vary :)

ETA - Someone asked in this thread if I planned on doing a torrent of episodes 10-23, and I never quite answered that question. Sadly I don't think I'll have the time to properly seed any such torrent, so whoever wants to is more than welcome to take the episodes and make a torrent out of them :)
