Unofficial: Vieira Agrees To Join Juve!
7/14/2005 5:00:00 AM
As yet unconfirmed reports from Italy claim that Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira has agreed to join Juventus for 18 million euros (£12 million) on a five-year contract.
Arsenal have refused to comment on the reports, but Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport and the ANSA press agency both claim a deal has been struck.

Juventus had sent a top level delegation to London in order to thrash out a deal for Vieira.

General director Luciano Moggi, vice president Roberto Bettega and chief officer Antonio Giraudo flew into the UK to try to finalise a transfer fee.

Juve were believed to have offered €7 million including a player, either Stephen Appiah or Jonathan Zebina, although this fell short of Vieira’s valuation.

If the reports from Italy are confirmed, it would appear that the Bianconeri upped their price and agreement was reached.

Vieira was Arsene Wenger’s first signing for Arsenal, joining the Gunners in August 1996 from AC Milan.

But it seems he has resigned himself to leaving Highbury after being told by Wenger that the club are close to a deal with Juventus.

On returning for pre-season training, Vieira yesterday asked for clarification about his future and was apparently informed that Wenger is prepared to accept a bid for him of £12-15 million.

Moggi and Bettega reportedly had a second meeting with Arsenal yesterday morning and left believing a deal was imminent.

The deal will be confirmed and announced today, according to Italian media. The Gazzetta Dello Sport website, citing unnamed officials from both clubs, said a deal was struck late Wednesday evening.

Both Gazzetta and ANSA, the Italian national press agency, reported that the clubs have agreed a deal which will be made official today.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, Vieira is unhappy that the Gunners are now willing to sell him. It is still possible he could stay if all parties fail to reach agreement on a deal.

But with Arsenal making it clear they are prepared to let him go, Vieira may feel that, at the age of 29, he has little choice but to accept a move. He is therefore likely to talk personal terms with Juve today.

Italian reports suggest that the Old Lady have put together a package for the Arsenal skipper which will see him paid around £82,000 per week over the duration of the contract, plus loyalty bonuses if he completes it.

With only two years left on his current Arsenal deal and no indication that the Gunners want to offer him an extension, Vieira probably feels his best option is to end a highly successful nine years in English football.

Arsenal have indicated that Juve's original proposal - cash plus midfielder Stephen Appiah - is not their preferred choice. Wenger is reportedly keen to pursue an interest in Lyon’s Mahmouda Diarra as a direct replacement for Vieira.

However, the French champions have offered their defensive midfielder a new contract and almost doubled his current salary in an attempt to fend off Arsenal's attentions.

Diarra has a release clause in his contract which would enable him to move to any club willing to double his £10,000-a-week salary. Lyon’s sudden move to enhance the player's terms looks like a bid to keep Arsenal at bay, though that may not be the end of the story.

Wenger may even attempt an audacious late move for Lyon's Michael Essien, a known admirer of the Arsenal coach. Essien is currently a Chelsea target, though Lyon are resisting their advances. Any Gunners bid would no doubt widen the rift between the two London rivals.

If he does leave the club, Vieira's last act for Arsenal will have been to lift the FA Cup, after his penalty proved decisive in the final shoot-out against Manchester United in May.

Ironically, last summer's transfer market was dominated by the saga of whether or not Vieira would opt to join Real Madrid. In the end he chose to stay with the Gunners but did not enjoy his best campaign, injury to both himsrelf and midfield partner Gilberto Silva undermining the first half of his season.

Arsenal Confirm: Vieira Is Juve's
7/14/2005 6:42:00 PM
Last night the Italian media had sent the first signs, this afternoon Arsenal confirmed them.
One of Arsenal’s all-time greats, Patrick Vieira, is now finalising personal terms and conditions with Juventus after the Gunners agreed terms with the Italian champions for his transfer for a total fee of 20 million Euros (£15 million).

The deal, trailed on Goal.com during recent days, brings to an end a remarkably successful association between Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger’s first signing for the club – in August 1996, from AC Milan.

A statement on the club’s official website, www.arsenal.com, paid tribute to ‘the enormous contribution’ made to Arsenal by their captain.

The statement read: “During his time at the club, Patrick made over 400 first team appearances, with three years as captain, and was instrumental in the club winning three Premiership titles and the FA Cup on four occasions.

“Also during his time at Arsenal, Patrick enjoyed great success with the French national team, by winning the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championships in 2000. He also became the captain of France and made [sic] a total of 79 caps for France as an Arsenal player.”

The statement addeed that everyone at Arsenal wished Vieira the best of luck for the future.

Wenger told arsenal.com: “I share the sadness with our supporters that Patrick has left us, but on the other hand I would say to them trust us and support us. We’ll be strong next season and we need you behind us like you have always been. We will not disappoint you.

"Patrick was a great player for us, one of the greatest in the club’s history, and I feel I had a special relationship with him because I made him come here. I think his impact, not only at Arsenal but in English football overall was just tremendous.

"The sad thing is that he leaves us, but the good thing is that he leaves us on a high. His last kick for the Club was symbolic as it won us the FA Cup.

"Patrick will always be special for Arsenal Football Club, always in our hearts and our minds. All I can do is thank him for all he gave to the Club and wish him well in his career."

As for Vieira himself, he said: “When you spend nine years at the club, like I did, it is a difficult decision to leave. But in the end you have to make a choice for your future. It was a very difficult decision, but I am happy with it.

"I made the decision to leave because I felt it was time for me to have a new challenge. But that does not mean I was unhappy or that I was having a problem at Arsenal.

"It was just that I had the feeling I needed to grow and meet a new challenge, and I feel Juventus was the best challenge for me.

"I‘d like to thank the Arsenal fans. They have been fabulous. Even recently in the street they were saying ‘if you are going, then thanks for the last nine years’. That is really touching and it makes me feel that I gave my best for the club.

"I can go with my head held high. I did my best every day in training and in every match, and I left shaking the hand of Arsène Wenger and [vice-chairman] Mr Dein. That was really important to me."

The question now for all Arsenal fans is: who will Wenger bring in to try and succeed the skipper? At least he now has some cash at his disposal to attract potential replacements.

Vieira Moves From Arsenal to Juventus

By Associated Press

July 14, 2005, 12:58 PM EDT

TURIN, Italy -- Midfielder Patrick Vieira transferred from Arsenal of the English Premier League to Juventus of Italy's Serie A on Thursday for a transfer fee of just over $24 million.

The 29-year-old will join France teammate David Trezeguet at Juventus, which won the Italian title last season. Vieira also played in Italy in 1995-96, when he was at AC Milan.

"When you spend nine years at the club, like I did, it is a difficult decision to leave," Vieira said. "But in the end you have to make a choice for your future. It was a very difficult decision, but I am happy with it."

Vieira: I Wanted Juve
7/15/2005 3:25:00 PM

The former Arsenal player will have the number 4 shirt left vacant by Paolo Montero.
Patrick Vieira spoke his first words as a Juventus player on Friday afternoon during his official presentation to the press.

“I’m proud to be here after nine years with Arsenal. I’m glad to be changing and I chose Juventus because it is a team always at the top; it also assures me continuity contrary to other clubs that contacted me during this period.”

Vieira wants to continue winning.

“With Arsenal I won a lot, with Juventus I want to continue winning more. I did not come here with the only objective of the Champions League but for a more ample valuation.”

The French midfielder is very honoured that new boss Fabio Capello compared him to Frank Rijkaard.

“When I was at Milan I was only 19 years-old, Capello was a good stimulator back then and he will be again now. Rijkaard is one of my idols, therefore the comparision pleases me; it’s a compliment.”

boruff, u are a smart man
before anything further, here's a little gossip. the deal has hit a snag.
the Juve doctors measured Vieira's legs and one appears six inches shorter.
That's why Juve won't pay the price demanded by Arsenal. cheeky bastard kekkek

all in all, WAY TO GO ASSHOLE!! Juve got ripped off, you have signed a player past his prime, a primadonna who will divide the squad like he did in Arsenal. Correct if I am wrong but was he not a failure and a half in his last experience in Italy.

Arsenal are smart they have signed the future in Appiah and a lot of money for a lankey piece of crap. Why was it that only Juve bid for him, evreryone knows it he is finished, and why would Arsenal sell, because they know he is good for nothing

VIEIRA-----EMERSON ????

Looks like you'll be playing super-duper action pack with boring football next year... & don't get too excited juve fans, he's 29 and probably has 2 good years left in him.

for those who might just wanderin why in God's name did Real never participate in this deal, well here it is :
Real has an agreement with milan, Inter and Juve as well as Man Utd not to bid on the same players, since it will only hike the rate of the transfer fee.
again no offense to Carson but Goal.com should be taken with a oinch of salt

though there is actually no real proof of such agreements but i too have noticed this for some time... some of the major clubs won't bid on the same players, and it helps so each of these clubs to get quality players for a relatively small price... Real WOULD have made a bid for Viera if it was a club other than Juve or Milan making that bid, coz Real have been after Viera every year in the past 3/4 years, so it was strange that suddenly now they didn't make a bid... Chelsea apparently doesn't have this understanding or agreement, considering the fact that they make a bid for EVERY big player there is, and ridiculously causes the price of the players to rise dramatically...

Agree with u Mith...
Chelsea is just messing the transfer market. But its hard to blame them especially when they literally have a limitless transfer funding. Every club that need to sell their player secretly hoping that Chelsea would bid for it, just to squeeze a bit more from them. I think everybody can see this pattern even tho' I doubt there is some kind of official arrangement between them.

i'm completely agree with both of y'all...in EPL itself..other clubs virtually have to wait whether Chelsea have already disclosed their bid or not if they should considered at all to participate in any players signature..
not just that, smaller clubs are looking forward to nurture their players to become potential superstar so that when comes to certain time, Chelsea might bid these
players, i mean not just bid them..but ridicolously with a high price..

Maurinho is becoming another 'RICH KID IN A LOOKING FOR CANDY IN A SWEET SHOP'...hehe..take Sean Wright for example..it was unnecessary..but Chelsea
bought the England right winger anyway..having all 4 EPL's brightest wingers at hand..
