The challenging part for me to accept for Splinter Cell Conviction, is that it's not really what you'd expect from the franchise. When Splinter Cell Double Agent came out, it was bleeding from several vital areas. When it came down to it, Double Agent was trying to evolve the character that was Sam Fisher. Well, events taken place in the story place Sam in a very fury-riddled position; he's got zero remorse for Third Echelon, his original agency, and he's trying to cope with the loss of his daughter who was killed in a car accident in the previous game. But Splinter Cell, no more. Hiding in the shadows really has it's moments in Conviction, depending where you're hiding. The mechanics of the game have changed so you can execute some ultimately kick ass moves with very little effort. But for me, that was the fun of it. Unfortunately, despite the ass-kickery that occurs in the game, it just doesn't hold up to what I believe the Splinter Cell franchise should be. Don't get me wrong. The there's a very adequate game style. But it's the fun of setting the traps and being a stealth agent of the prior games that Conviction lacks. Instead of infiltrating the levels, you simply walk right in. One of the major let downs for me was the lack of freedom. In prior SC games I didn't feel like a machine set to kill -- in Conviction, you play as an ex-agent looking to get revenge. Following your own orders, you can basically do whatever you want. It's possible to play the game in stealth, but it's clear that playing Conviction with the old style of stealth maneuvers is something the developers didn't make their primary focus. Movement can be clumsy, and with the addition of a cover system that ranks along side Wanted: Weapons of Fate (who in my opinion did it better), Splinter Cell's frustration level can reach critical peaks with little effort. The trial and error gameplay of previous games remains the same, but with longer loading times and less interaction with the environment (ie: no jump button?, can't hide bodies? Infinite ammo? no true night vision?) makes Conviction something that deserves to be kept behind bars for veteran Splinter Cell players. But on the other hand, the game unleashes Sam Fisher. You get to explode in an abundance of rage and death. With a trippy storyline that molds 24 and the Bourne series together, a vast assortment of weapons, and a slew of multiplayer options, Splinter Cell Conviction deserves your attention; the previous games in the franchise however, should never be forgotten. |

I agree with pretty much everything you said Rocky. To make it simple, they made it too easy. What made the earlier ones fun was the challenge. I noticed that I couldn't hide bodies as well and that was upsetting. It could've been very useful in some situations. The AI also seemed to be lacking as far as intelligence, even on realistic. They made the game feel like it was made for idiots that had never played Xbox before or something. They took a lot of the real stealth aspects out of the game. And like you said, they took out night vision and all of that. The storyline also felt very short compared to earlier SC games to me as well. I don't want to hear this crap that I keep hearing about single player only being a small part of the game compared to co-op either. I enjoyed sitting alone, in the dark, by myself, playing this game while I strategically and stealthily plotted my moves. Not much else to add. It wasn't a terrible game by any stretch, they just pulled a Fable -> Fable 2 and dumbed it down.
