It's that time of the year again when I update the question of the week, and you all reply with pages and pages of deep, gamer-defining answers that blow the best journalists in the industry OUT OF THE WATER!![]() Reach is going to be very bloody, and dark. Time to kick some glass. The question this week, is regarding the upcoming Halo: Reach game which is scheduled for launch next year. All we really know is that it's going to be using the same engine block as Forza 3, and the there's a beta code given out for the multiplayer component with early launch copies of Halo 3: ODST. So that's the question.... just what do you think Halo: Reach is? It's Bungie's next installment, yes.... but what will it be like? More first person shooter? Will you play as a Spartan? As John? JohnSON? Multiple characters "muy similar a la" ODST? What's your take? I hope it'll take a graphical step up. I love me some Halo, but it feels like I've been fighting the same enemies in all three games, plus ODST. Here's hoping for a groundbreaking graphical overhaul..... Who knows? Perhaps one day I'll be working on Halo 4: Reach: ODST: Recon: Johnson's Story. |

Very good question, Rocky. Around the time of Halo 3's release, either before or after, Bungie had picked up a couple of the Ghost Recon developers. Ever since people have suspected Bungie's working on a more squad-based tactical shooter, Halo or not. Whether it's true, only Bungie knows, but such a game would require an engine beyond what the Halo 3 engine is capable of. After all, it is just an updated Halo 2 engine. |

I have no idea. With the way ODST was, I'm not sure if Bungie is capable of straying away from the FPS style all the Halo games have been. Not that I mind them, I just don't expect that drastic of a change in the game play. All I can do is hope that it'll surprise me, in a good way. |

This is true. I really hope that the word tactical comes to the Halo Universe. As good as ODST is, it compares not to the tactical feel of Ghost Recon, or Vegas. There were also rumors of Gearbox working with Bungie to bring a suppression/flank game feel to Halo. I wonder where that went? I'd like to see Reach play something along the lines of said games. The difference between Halo 3 and ODST is a health system and world models. It plays fantastic, and the campaign is totally worth playing through a few times -- but a full fledged sequel that covers the new age of gaming tech wouldn't hurt.... I think we all know that Halo isn't the greatest looking game out there; but I'll take 5-10FPS less for a glossier and more detailed Halo; hopefully Reach will bring that to the table and change up their game mechanics. I'd like to pick up Reach and not be familiar with it, you know? In ODST, I already knew all the controls. I knew the physics, the enemies, the laws of the engine. It's almost a R6V2 type of situation, you know? I'd like a sequel in the sense of Ghost Recon PC upgrading to Advanced Warfighter. The change was absolutely astonishing, and I'd love to see Bungie try something new in the Halo verse. |

Keep in mind that ODST was not a game developed by the whole of Bungie, it was just a side project by a small team. Reach on the other hand is one of their main projects. Bungie's actually having to move out of their building because of how large the team has grown. I do think Reach will be squad based, the setting and team shown during the trailer help with that. Why would there be a squad of Spartans, each seemingly in a defined role, if it's not squad based? The only other scenarios I could see are either a Battlefield: Halo type game or a Halo MMOFPS. While both would be awesome, the MMOFPS is highly unlikely because of the setting, Reach gets glassed. But a Battlefield style game isn't out of the realm of possibility. I'm sure there were massive, large-scale battles that happened during the fall of Reach. And that would suit a large player-count game like Battlefield. |
