Google will be coming out with a PowerMeter that measure your power usage in your home and helps you conserve, and save! It's in the close Beta right now, but this looks really interesting.

"How much does it cost to leave your TV on all day? What about turning your air conditioning 1 degree cooler? Which uses more power every month — your fridge or your dishwasher? Is your household more or less energy efficient than similar homes in your neighborhood?

Our lack of knowledge about our own energy usage is a huge problem, but also a huge opportunity for us all to save money and fight global warming by reducing our power usage. Studies show that access to your household's personal energy information is likely to save you between 5–15% on your monthly bill, and the potential impact of large numbers of people achieving similar efficiencies is even more exciting. For every six households that save 10% on electricity, for instance, we reduce carbon emissions as much as taking one conventional car off the road (see sources and calculation).

At Google we're committed to helping enable a future where access to personal energy information helps everyone make smarter energy choices. To get started, we're working on a tool called Google PowerMeter which will show consumers their electricity consumption in near real-time in a secure iGoogle Gadget. We think PowerMeter will offer more useful and actionable feedback than complicated monthly paper bills that provide little detail on consumption or how to save energy.

But Google PowerMeter is just a start; it will take lots of different groups working together to create what the world really needs: a path to smarter power."

FAQs -

"Why is Google doing this?
We want to help everyone save money and combat global warming by reducing their electricity consumption. Google PowerMeter brings our expertise at organizing information to this complex but very important task of reducing electricity consumption.

What needs to happen to give people access to their energy information?
To get access to energy information, homes need to be equipped with advanced energy meters called "smart meters." There are currently about 40 million smart meters in use worldwide, with plans to add another 100 million in the next few years. But smart meters need to be coupled with a strategy to provide customers with easy access to near real-time data on their energy usage. We're working on a prototype product that would give people this information in an iGoogle gadget.

What is Google PowerMeter?
Google PowerMeter, currently a prototype product, will allow you to see your own energy usage information and help you improve your efficiency in a variety of ways. The first way you'll see this tool in action is through a secure iGoogle gadget that will let you safely and privately browse your home electricity usage.

How much does this cost?
Google PowerMeter will be free. We hope to work with as many utility companies as possible to deliver this data to anyone with a smart meter.

How can I sign up for Google PowerMeter?
For now, Google PowerMeter is a closed beta program. But we're working with utility companies and independent device manufacturers to bring your energy information to you in several ways, so we hope you'll stay tuned by checking back here or joining our mailing list. And we promise that once we think Google PowerMeter is ready, we'll be opening up the program to everyone.

What are Google PowerMeter's privacy practices?
Google PowerMeter is an opt-in service and users must sign up to participate. No personally identifying information will be shared between Google and the user's utility. All energy data received by Google PowerMeter will be stored securely, and users will be able to delete their energy data or ask their utility to stop sending data to Google PowerMeter at any time. More information about Google PowerMeter's privacy practices will be available at time of launch.

I'm a utility or an in-home energy device manufacturer. How can I partner with Google?
We're expanding our PowerMeter beta program right now. If you're a utility company that has rolled out smart meters to some of your customers, you probably qualify to be part of our trial, even if your rollout isn't finished yet. Please fill out our form and we'll send you the details.

How can I learn more ways to save energy?
This page has a bunch of tips that you might find useful.

Who else is working on the issue of energy information?
There's a lot of great work being done with smart meters, smart grids and energy information. Here are a few of the industry groups that you might want to look into."

I'm pretty interested in this personally. First hand testimonials have already claimed to have saved $3,000 a year using this!
