Trash talk. It's changed the experience in online games, and evolves every day. New workarounds such as the Xbox 360's party system take it down a notch, but it's pretty much inescapable. Head to a public forum like GAF or ABS and you'll find your soul is riddled with holes within a day or two -- and just for speaking your opinion. That's why InfinityGaming is really awesome -- nobody here argues. There's debates, consisting (most of the time) of people that KNOW their material.... But heading online, and getting slammed for something you can't help is just obnoxious and stupid, and it makes me wonder just how it got so bad in the first place? Was it the first people to use in game exploits? The immature teens that would hijack daddy's live account and hop online? Was it Halo? There's a fine line between trash talk and death threats. Both which are exchanged all too frequently online, but that line seems too thin, or invisible to some that use the service not for gaming, but for the thrill of the words; furthermore, I'm sure we've all received such blasphemy at one point or another. ![]() Perhaps people aren't taking pride in their console, a la fanboyism, but are more selfishly taking pride in themselves as a gamer. There's a hundred billion different reasons people talk shit online, and I just wanted to know what you guys thought about it? And more importantly, what ideas do you have to stop it? I have mixed feelings about trash talk. To a point, I think it's a viable strategy to get in your opponents head. Sometimes there's nothing better than when an opposing team trash talks before a game, then you win and get to shove it back in their faces in the post game lobby. But like I said, TO A POINT. Death threats? Get that outta here. I have quite a few friends that started from trash talking and turned into jokes. So, while I'm not particularly fond of trash talking, I'm also not 100% against it. And the party system is the perfect way to avoid it. |

What pisses me off is when people do it for no reason. You join a lobby with your friends and you're chatting and all of a sudden the other team interjects some bullshit for no reason. Then when you don't reply they keep going. Now if they did that, and we started back, it's fair game, but when people insist on doing it not-stop for no reason and tea bag your body, that's just childish. I try to avoid it as much as possible, but if some guy gets under the map in W@W, I'm going to tell him what's up. I think it started with Xbox Live in General. People started getting competitive, and took everything too seriously. Ranking systems is what does it. People take it so seriously, it's kind of weird. That's not to say that if there wasn't ranking systems there wouldn't be trash talking. It just wouldn't be to the extent it is now. Nowadays people will cuss out their teammates for not doing extraordinarily well or not matching their score. That's why if and when I do play Halo 3 I just play Social. Barely any trash talking in there. Hop into MLG and you get tea bagged, screamed at, and message spammed. So, I think it just started when little kids began playing LIVE games with ranks, and then made ranking up their lives. That and the lack of games is why I don't play 360 much anymore. |

Most of the time it dosen't bother me. It's those guys that just yell or sing crap so loud you can't hear anyone else. Sometimes I think the party chat is great but I also think it stops you from talking with people that you might have put on your friends list. |

Oh man, I can't stand when people sing/play loud music into their mic. It's not too big of a deal because of the lovely mute button, but it's sooooo annoying. |

I just ignore it. I don't know them and they're obviously idiots hiding behind the veil of anonymity. As to how to fix it. The only way is to make people use their real names, which is never gonna happen. Or make it legally prosecutable, which still isn't going to have much of an impact. |

Nothing wrong with trash-talk between friends, so long as it isn't crossing the line of: "okay, you're being a prick." As far as others go? I usually have my settings on friends only, party only, etc. so I really don't hear them. When I do, I usually mute them so fast it's barely noticeable. Only way to go. I don't know where trash-talking first started, but I can tell you this: I first noticed it going overboard with Halo 2. Now I guess it's just supposed to be accepted as the norm or whatever... I don't get it, but hey - they're muted anyway, the bastards. |

So I was playing Gears 2 today with Galli and a few other friends. After a match that we won, I saw all the talk indicators lighting up for the opposing team. So, I decided to switch from party chat to game chat just to hear what was going on, and what do I hear? "ONBIBASJNGKBNSNIEINFSD NOOB DIE NFONSAVSEONSD HAHAHA U SUK CHAINSAW NOOB BITCH" LOUD! OBNOXIOUS! Praise be to the production team at Microsoft or whoever made the NXE and party system. I never have to listen to that crap again. |

ill be honest. i dont mind some good old fashioned trash talking. its just a fun thing to do sometimes. but some people take it overboard. hearing the word **** every 2 seconds and bringing racism to the table is just unnecessary trash talking. what really gets me is how ill just be playing a game, own someone, then i hear some 10 year old kid screaming his ass off rattling off every curse word and insult he can think of. its ridiculous to be honest and i wish something could be done about it. im just not sure what exactly would work to stop it. |

Well, I remember reading an article about something Microsoft was/is working on. It mentioned a program that can detect and suppress certain words or phrases before they're sent through the chat system. Never really said if it was in a working state or not, but that could be one solution. |

Me and my friends tend to trash talk, but it mainly makes us look like idiots because what we say sounds stupid and insulting to ourselfs...sinister knows what i mean, lol. Anyway, if im playing alone and people just start trash talking, i'll usually interupt them and either confuse them with pointless crap, or make it a hell of alot worse.

That's the best. That's why I love having such an expansive vocabulary. I run into idiots that try to insult me and make themselves sound stupid and turn it on them. We love doing that.

Ahaha, we don't trash talk really. We just say random crap to confuse people and it irritates them because they don't even know what we're saying so they're not sure if we're insulting them or not, lol. |
