95% of Music Downloads Illegal; Surprise

EDIT: In no way, shape or form does InfinityGaming.net encourage or support illegal acquisition of any media.

Here's yer link.

Pretty interesting, not surprising. I think we talked about this before, but it was more along the lines of bootlegged games.

In brief, a report was put together by the IFPI stating that 95% of music downloads are illegal and something like 40 billion songs were downloaded through P2P means.

One of the polls conducted to see what would change people around was asking if people would stop downloading if their internet connection would be disconnected when caught, after 3 strikes for example. Doubt that will happen.

Another interesting point was that maybe if companies would remove DRM (digital rights managed - song download with limitations as to how many copies could be burned, or how many computers the file can be on) and lower prices, there would be less piracy. Makes more sense.

I support buying CDs, but it's not always an option. Without people buying CDs, new bands can't get started and semi-new bands can't keep going. But when I want a single track of some random album made in 1990 and it's not on iTunes or something, I'm not going to buy an entire album for it. Zune is the best option for getting music downloads in my opinion. $15.00 a months to download as many songs as you want and keep them as long as your subscription is active, and key 10 songs a month permanently. iTunes is ridiculous. $0.99 for each song? Okay, my 2G iPod holds roughly 350 songs, depending on track lengths. Now if I bought every one from iTunes Store, that'd be $350. That's almost paying for the iPod twice.

What's your views?

I have always been a fan of piracy when it comes to music. The thing is, the majority of money that bands make is not from record sales, but rather from touring and merchandise (or so I've been told, I cannot prove this). So, with this in the back of my mind, I do not feel bad about not buying music. I have roughly 3k songs on my computer, all jacked via torrents. If a band is good enough, they will get money from me when I go to see them live, and buy a shirt while I'm there (I do this quite often).

I HIGHLY doubt that disconnecting peoples internet connection would be implemented. ISP's need money, too. I get the feeling that people would find a way around it, anyway. They always do, there's always a way around spending money for things like music. It's easy to have someone buy the album, put it on their computer, then make hundreds of copies and give them out. That would avoid everything. There's really no way to stop piracy.

I think they should leave things as they are. Let me download my music, the bands will get my money when they earn it!

I'm not going to lie, I get all of my music off Limewire, but if I support a band enough, I'll buy their CD when I see them in concert. And you're right, they get their money of contract signings, touring, merc, etc. CDs are just a fraction, but that's for the big bands. New bands, local bands, don't get $1,000,000 deals.

I've known a few artists in Victoria (here) that just give away their CD's after venues. It gets them hits, and what most artists should care about: people listening to their music.

I won't lie either. I've never payed for music online other than the means of buying CD's via Amazon or eBay. When it comes down to it, I'll DL songs by an artist (usually as an album). And if their music is what I like, then I'll keep it... if not, then I'll delete it.

I do like what the Zune Marketplace does though. Something like 14.99 per month and you get ACCESS to all the songs. You can load them onto the Zune, but don't own them... something like that. But I don't like paying for music. Especially when record labels are spewing out repetitive crap.

What Radiohead did with "In Rainbows", which is one of my all time favourite albums, is they just released the tracks online for free with an optional donation button. I got the music leagally, without paying a dime. BUT, I did end up buying their CD when it got shipped to retailers, mainly because I think what they did was enough to earn my $15.

So other people should follow that example. It made them TONS of cash, and NONE of it went to the record labels, because... well, they didn't have one! Nine Inch Nails did the same with "Slip." And it payed off for them too.... frikin' amazing.
