Vyise and myself downloaded and played it after it went up this morning. Now I can't say much about how it plays, since it's really my first Resident Evil game, but knowing how the series has played, I'd say I was impressed. It can get quite intense at times, which is just awesome. It really does acquire a good deal of teamwork.

So the Resident Evil 5 Demo has gotten my Seal of Approval, I encourage all to try it out.

PS: This news feed seems to say there is three levels, but I've only seen two, just thought I'd let you know.

Cool, I noticed a few of my friends playing this today. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it tonight after class.

Tried it out earlier today and thought it was really awesome. I played a tad of RE4 on the Wii, but just didn't get into the whole gesture aiming thing since it isn't exactly 1:1 for aiming. But the RE5 demo blew me away. The controls are a little slow and need some getting used to, but once you get past the fact that you can't move and shoot at the same time, the game gets really insane.

The first level just pits you against an onslaught of zombie dudes; and it's tough. My only real strategy was to empty all my guns on them, run away, wait for one or two to get close, knife the crap out of them, pick up ammo and repeat.

This Sheva character is really cool too -- believable, like most of the RE5 surroundings. I only played the singleplayer aspect of it, but she got in the way a little -- but I found she was smart enough to hold her own, and she saved my ass more than a number of times. I tend to give her a lot of ammo and health too, since she uses the health herbs when they need to be used, as opposed to my slow ass going through the menus -- she can use them in a pinch, which is really good.

That chainsaw dude is really epic too -- took me about 15 minutes to finally kill him.

I'll join Zypher by saying that RE5 gets my stamp of approval. Try it out, and share your moments here! :)

Just got done playing it with Vyise earlier. Graphics are great, really nice looking. Character models are a bit off, like Sheva's arms are too round and the other dude's muscles are a bit too massive, lol but that's not that big a deal. The controls are definitely something new. Honestly, I don't like them one bit. But there's so many other cool things about this game that push that aside. Overall, pretty cool game. Not my favorite, but it's something new and refreshing.

K so I tried the demo, and... I.... did not like it one bit. It was my first encounter with the RE series, and I was not pleased. Shooting without moving? What the heck is that about? Dumbest thing I've ever seen in a game. The game is slow and uninteresting. The menus are a pain to navigate, there isn't enough ammo to satisfy my needs, and the fact that every two seconds I'm wiggling my left thumbstick to break free of a hold annoys me to no end. I'm sure there's some story to the game, but I doubt it's enough to make up for the awful gameplay.

Graphics are on par with most other games, but nothing special. In my opinion, this game has nothing spectacular, and isn't worth playing.

Pretty much the complete opposite opinion of everyone else that tried it. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Resident Evil is a horror/thriller, so it's designed that way to prevent it from becoming to easy and you know, actually horrify or thrill you. That's the way the series has always been to my understanding, and it's a proven formula that works for the game.

It's an interesting take on the genre of horror games. I'm used to the first person games being scary, like FEAR or Condemned -- sometimes even Left 4 Dead or some such.

But RE5 wasn't so much scary as it was anxiety inducing. Being cornered and low on ammo, surrounded by big ass executioners with massive axe things was pretty clinching. I don't really like it ENOUGH to consider it a buy at this point, but I just played a coop match with Zypher that swung that right around. Saucy -- try playing it online with a friend or something... it's really a lot of fun.

I actually did. Me and my friend played both levels. I was neither horrified, anxious, nor thrilled... I was angered. The game is too slow to induce any sort of panic.

-I press the knife buttons, but the zombie is too far away
-I move closer as the zombie stands there, press knife combo again, still too far
-move closer, hit him 3 times, another zombie jumps on my back
-elbow him off, repeat from first step

That isn't fun, it's annoying. Also, the fact that in the first stage, they gave me a sniper is RIDICULOUS. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH A SNIPER, IN A SMALL ROOM FULL OF ZOMBIES? My partner gets a kick ass shotgun, I get a sniper. What's that about?

I can definitely see where you're coming from Saucey. The no shooting while moving is pretty lame, and if it's because it'd make it to easy, put more infected in there and then make it shooting while moving. The menus don't suck that bad once you figure out there's a quick switch, I'll rent, no buy.

I find that RE is one of the franchises that's allowed to make a stubborn game like this. There's a lot of practical things that you can't do, like Saucy was saying about the knife distance thing. It would be cool if you could throw your knife or something, but being immobile and forced to melee is something that I'm not used to -- especially since I'm a fan of the ninja-knife-jump of Call of Duty games, and ESPECIALLY when you're surrounded.

I found that teamwork was more essential in RE5 than it is in Left 4 Dead. You'll get completely overwhelmed, and if your buddy is off screwing around looking for ammo, then you're pretty much done. And another thing that I like is the sharing of inventories. Making each character almost 'class-based' with specific weapon types (like Shotgun, machine gunner, sniper, etc) and using them properly really seems to work well, assuming both partners are familiar with the game mechanics. I don't know. I like the game a lot, but there's a lot of fine print for a game like this -- it's frustrating to the point where the game it self will break you... Kinda reminds me of Lost Planet in a few different ways, where the camera or the game engine will obstruct you from doing anything right, but it's weird because RE5 makes it look natural. :S

Confused yet?

I look at it this way, I'm a firm believer that every game in a genre should have similar control schemes, and for the most part they do. But, with that comes the feeling that all games feel the same, since you're inputting the same commands you always do. While games can continue to have similar controls, they shouldn't all play alike. And I think, at least in the shooter genre, that is all to common. That's one thing that originally made Call of Duty interesting to me, it created a new aiming system (Aim Down The Sights), but now it seems more and more shooters are implementing it. The only thing separating them is generally the game setting.

So, while the way Resident Evil must be played can be frustrating, at least it does something different. Which is what I want to see in more games. Because quite frankly, even Call of Duty is feeling rather generic now.

You see aiming down the sites more often now because it makes since, it's what you do. I guess CoD made people more aware of that, I didn't know it started that trend. Anyways, the knife thing definitely pissed me off. I'd try to knife a zombie, be too far away, walk up to him to knife again, but get jumped. And the knife barely does any damage. I think all games should have a control set-up that you can change, not preset ones. Like TF2, that was awesome. More games need to implement that.

You guys make good points. RE is trying to do something different, and I'm sure it appeals to more than enough people to make a decent amount of sales. However, I think that if they simply changed it so that you can move while shooting/knifing and upped the difficulty and movement speed of zombies, it would be an awesome game. They could balance it out so that it is still effective to barricade doors with furniture, ammo could still be scarce to create a sense of helplessness, and it would be AWESOME. It would be more similar to Left 4 Dead in some aspects, but they could still keep their aiming system to make it unique, just allow the left stick to control movement.

*goes back to Gears 2 and CoD4*

Tried the demo, just a rental for me. I didn;t like the stop and shoot or knife. The stop just to far out of reach for the knife sucked.

can't say I liked the system either. The not moving while knifing thing was just too much. The shooting I could deal with though. It looked like it would be cool otherwise.
