A not so long time ago, in the galaxy of our very own, Bioware, Lucas Arts, and EA announced their latest colaborative project, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Continueing the story of one of the most successful Star Wars games, Knight of the Old Republic, was something many gamers wished for. And now those wishes will be fulfilled. However, The Old Republic will have one major difference than it's predecessors. Instead of it returning to the single-player the previous games used, Old Republic will be going Massively Mulitplayer.

While details are still very scarce, the game still has at least a years more development time, we do know that Bioware is trying one thing every MMO has failed at, and that's story. With Old Republic, Bioware hopes to bring a dynamic and personal story to the MMO genre, much like that with most of their latest games. But, there's one difference from those titles, in Old Republic the choices you'll make can't be undone or re-selected. Which will make you're story truly unique from that of other players. To get a more in-depth impression, check out the following Video Documentary that was released today.

If you would like to check out more on the game visit www.SWTOR.com.

Looks really cool, and pretty flashy for an MMO game too. EA's wallet shouldn't hurt this game at all, which is why I think it will do really great. I can see Star Trek online being a bit of a competitor, but they're different games.

But a story... in an MMO? Pretty chancy. Let hope they pull it off.

Any idea how they're handling character development?

Well, there will be Jedi and Sith, and there will be Light Side and Dark Side. The unique think about this time period, however, is that the defining line of Jedi and Sith isn't there. Since Jedi and Sith are more beliefs than they are factions, you won't be forced to be just a Light Side Jedi, or Dark Side Sith. You'll be able to be a Dark Side Jedi, and a Light Side Sith, if you so choose.

Bioware has stated that there will be other character classes beyond Jedi and Sith, but none of been specifically announced. But I think you could use Star Wars Galaxies classes as a good basis as to what there will be.

As far as actually character appearance customization, we know nothing, because they've shown us nothing. But I'd expect it to be pretty in-depth, Bioware knows what their fans want. And they couldn't get by using the previous method from Knights. It will probably be a slider system similar to Mass Effect, only with a few more choices.

PS: So it turns out my spell-checker recognises Jedi as a word, but not Sith, lol.

From what I saw in the video, it looks like you can choose different races/species, like that blue alien race. Could be wrong, though, doubt it. ;) Finally a reason to invest into a new computer.

Every Star Wars fan knows there's plenty of races that could be playable. Star Wars Galaxies has the 10 most common, I think, so I'd expect TOR to have those as well. From the released media I've counted about four races that look to be playable.

I don't really mind there being a large amount of Force Sensitive players in TOR, it's time-line allows for that. After all it's during one of the biggest conflicts between the Jedi/Republic and Sith. Galaxies had it right when the game first released, there were no Jedis. Players had to unlock their Force Character while playing, and there was no set way to do that. But once they updated it with the "New Game Enhancements", the Jedi became the basic melee brawler class.

I just hope there are more classes than a Force Character, which I'm sure there will be.

I'm kind of iffy on the animation/art style. Looks kind of..awkward for some reason. I dunno maybe it's just me.

I really like the art style, it's a good compromise over photo-realism and performance. Yeah, a photo-realistic game would be great, but it is a MMO, and most MMOs that have gone for that look don't do well because most people can't run them properly. After all, that's one of the reasons WoW is what it is. And while TOR isn't photo-realistic, it sure as hell isn't WoW's style either. Curious, did you watch all four parts?
