I had an epiphany at work today. The little kids hate me!![]() Over the past year working at Blockbuster, we've become one of the many test stores giving gamers an expanded game section with a retail gaming corner (and now test marketing game rentals on the new release wall), expanded game rental section as well as selling accessories and consoles themselves. Many games on consoles these days harbor thousands upon millions of potential gamers that will ruin your day online by saying this and that about this person or that person. I'm going to start and end this blog entry with the same sentence: I did my job today. So a kid around 12 or 13 years old comes into the store with his mom, and looks around for a bit. They eventually get to the game section where the kid sees something he likes, and busts out the good old, "Oh, I'll pay you back if you get this for me!" The kid wants Call of Duty 4. The mom calls me over, asking for the keys to the glass case to get the game out of the cabinet. I do so, and let her know about the relative ESRB ratings that applied (in this case, CoD4 is "M 17+") . Here's how the conversation played out:
Then.... the kid.... he gave me this look like the I just killed his dog, his parents, his fish, red ringed his 360, pissed on his face and stepped on his glasses. Mouth open, he said, "I hate you." Holy crap, right? The mom told him to watch his mouth and pointed at him and all that jazz.... My face was like I just found out that I won a million bucks. When I was breaking the news to the mom that he wasn't old enough for the game, I didn't want to -- hell, if I were in his position I know that I'd be the asshole that wouldn't sell me a game that I've already played at a buddies house; but in the end, I just did my job. -Rocky |

That's hilarious. I mean it's no where near as bloody as Gears and some other games. I hardly ever even see blood in CoD4. If he played Halo, I would think he's mature enough to handle CoD. You just have to realize the difference between shooting aliens and people. But in the end, you did your job. |

It's not that fact that the kid can/does play the game. The question is should he be playing the game. Most parents don't know what their kids are playing and/or who they're playing them with. I bet if most parents really paid attention to their kids behavior and actions(both normal and gaming) more closely, then we wouldn't have so many "you know whats" online and on the streets. In no way am I saying there should be age limits, I support good parenting over forced laws completely. But if we, as gamers, have the opportunity to enlighten uninformed or misinformed parents, we should do so. If only to make our experience more enjoyable. |

Well, the parent just has to decide if the kid is mature enough to realize the difference between and game and real life. Like my dad, he let's me watch movies that are rated R where people are dying, cussing, etc., but he trusts me enough to know I won't go out and shoot someone or cuss out an adult. I agree with you, ESRB ratings should be guidelines, not laws. The same thing with movie ratings. Why should the government dictate what I play or watch? They're doing the same thing with food. At my school all there is, is diet drinks. Coke Zero, Diet Dr. Pepper, and all that crap. I know it's with good intention, but I'll drink soda with sugar and calories and get fat if I want to. If they want to help they should offer free weight loss programs or something. So in the end, it comes down to the parents. Parents these days are slacking and it's obvious. But even if you let an immature kid play Halo or watch a movie with cuss words, if the parents are strict enough he won't reenact what he sees or plays. So really we can blame shitty parenting for the abundance of retards on Xbox Live and for kids shooting themselves with rifles. What kind of idiot would leave a rifle in a kids reach? Well, that's not exactly the same thing, Sinister (your "obvious" link). It could be related, but then again, he could've been reenacting something he saw in an R-rated movie just as easily, if you get my point. As for your school, they do offer a free weight loss program: it's called PE! The ESRB is there as a guideline, and you recommended it to the mother, and she decided if she'd buy it or not - that's the way it's supposed to work, right? Good job, and good call on the mother's part. As for the kid hating you, well... Think of it this way: one "I hate you" vs. one less kid spouting off a thousand "I hate yous" on Live. You've done the Live community a service! |

I'm lost, what isn't the same thing? And you missed my point. I wasn't talking only about just school with the government controlling what we eat. They do it other places too, more and more. So, I'm talking free Weight Watchers, not PE. |

LOL nothing is free, man! People shouldn't expect something for nothing just because they're lazy; if they get off the couch & go excercise, that's taking responsibility & not blaming their weight on someone/something else. As for school - if your school is public, there are minimal nutritional requirements that are tied into your shcool's funding for - you know, learning & such - and there's nothing wrong with that. It's not any school's responsibility to make sure you get the tasty beverage of your choice, yeah? I did not miss your point, I just didn't think I'd have to go into much detail about it. The government doesn't control as much as people claim. It's like one of them "They" conspiracies... Things like the ESRB and movie ratings are guidelines for parents, not strict orders. At the same time, parents can't be realistically blamed for everything their kid does. Mind you, I'm not talking about while they're sitting in the home along with their kid while they sit infront of a game console or PC, or what they watch on TV. Being a parent myself, I hear that "shitty parenting" line all too often, and usually by kids themselves who moan about prepubescents at the same time they're talking like a foul-mouthed punkass. It just gets old. Kids are gonna be kids. |

Trust me, I know. I'm an idealist though. And I agree, it's EASY to not get fat. But just because some people are lazy my school makes everyone have to drink diet Dr. Shit. This isn't nutritional requirements, for the past I don't know 5 years we've have regular coke and this year they make everything diet, everything...except water. I don't think the government controls much at all. If they did we'd hear more about it then from your occasional government conspirator. And wrong, try sending in an 11 yr. old to buy GTA IV and see how far he gets. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he got it. People are slackin' these days, unlike Rocky. ![]() No, parents can't. Kids witness things out of their parents control at school or with friends. But they can take the responsibility of sitting down with them and clearing up with the kids what the fundamental wrongs and rights are and that not everything they hear is true, etc. Me being 15, I hear a lot of crap at school and it does change me and the way I act, but not to the extent that some other kids are who's parents care more about the football game than talking to their kid. Anyway, we could go on about this for god knows how long, in the end it's just opinions. Although you are a parent so I'm pretty sure you have a better perspective about the parenting side of the case, and me with the school side. Fun conversation though.

Opinions are the cornerstone of conversation, and everyone has them. It would be boring if we all thought alike. Think I'll go get me a diet 7-Up now (that's not the government ruling my beverage choice, it's my wife! Some things even the government can't control!). |
