Odd, I distinctly remember there being a Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2. Both of which had the same intense gameplay, just without the perk system. Perks aren't needed to make a great shooter. The Perks system is just that, a perk, something else to bullet on the back of the box. The series never needed the system, and out of all the things Infinity Ward has perfected, the Perks System is their biggest mistake/failure. It wasn't completely thought out, and isn't balanced properly. There are no downsides to any perks in the game, other than not having another perk, which is the biggest flaw. If it was redesigned to were each perk had a negative effect to you, than I wouldn't mind them as much.

Well obviously they did something right, since it's been on of the most played games since it's release. Many people may have the same opinion as you, but there are also many that love the perk system and see no problems with it, such as myself. If you really think it's broken or unbalanced, I guess you just have to miss out on the fun =[

I myself never even played CoD or CoD2, and I only played a little little bit of CoD3 (probably cause I played it on the Wii... big mistake). CoD4 and its perk system got me hooked, and has kept me playing to this day. I guess yet again, we have to settle on a "to each his own" sort of thing.

PERKS! I can't believe that you guys don't like them! Without perks it would just be any other game. Perks allow you to try a combination that works, and gives people almost a pseudo-personality. I love being in a game, and I notice a dude sniping, so I change my class to a silent UAV jammer, sneak around all sneaky like, and POW! Right in the kisser.

These perks look sweet. A lot of the same, but there's nothing wrong with that. Stick to what works. I wish they did that with Super Smash Bros: Brawl for the Wii.
Which is exactly what I'd prefer - I just want to play the game, you know? Not get pissed off because some yahoo can sit on his or her 360 all week long levelling up to have more of an advantage over someone who only plays occasionally. It gets frustrating, and eventually ends up turning into nothing but a level chaser in my opinion.

As for what works - I hate CoD4 precisely because of perks, and have had better times playing shooters that don't have them. Well, the grenade b.s. is probably about even. Obviously, not all of us have the same opinion on what works, I guess.

I'm not sure that the perk system is what made Call of Duty 4 the most played multi-player game to date, competing with Halo 3. I am sure it has something to do the cutting-edge graphics, what is it 16 players?, and it's just fun, despite the perks. Thornes is dead on with what he said. People who play a lot have the advantage over those who don't. And a lot of these "stories" behind your perks are really hypothetical. Why would the army equip one person to have the ability to jam UAVs and not the entire platoon? The same goes for deep impacting bullets. I could apply this to a lot of the others, but I don't feel like it. Now there is some truth to the faster reloading, but that's about it. Anyways, it all comes down to preference, as usual. And it is a game, so not everything has to make sense. I just think the game would be better off without perks, or only allowing perks in non-ranked and private matches, perhaps.

What Saucy did was cool, so I'll just give my standard opinion of the list, or how I use em....

PERK 1
C4 x2 - I like using it around corners and stuff, or if I'm in the camp-whore mood. Might prove useful if vehicles make it into the final game?
Special Grenades x3 - I use these until I get the x3 Frags; My default class is a fast SMGr, so these only make it easier to storm a room and kill everyone.
RPG x2 - Again, might prove useful if vehicles make it into the game, but I don't see a 2008 Attack Helo attacking the ground in WWII...
Claymore x2 - If I'm sniping, I'll plant these around my main shoot point. Most people would go for the knife kill if they saw a lone still sniper.... *click*
Bandolier - I'd use if I had the flame thrower... I want LOTS of mega death, not just a tad.
Bomb Squad - Used once, got killed by a claymore behind a wall... never used again.
PERK 2
Stopping Power - I'll use if I have a sniper rifle. BAM.
Juggernaut - I might use in the off chance that there's a shipment map, but only if I'm using an LMG.
Sleight of Hand - I use this with my speed class. Takes less time to reload an MP5 with Sleight, than switching to your pistol.
Double Tap - Another one that I'll use for my rifleman class... Depending on the latency of the server, you can deal a massive amount of damage with this perk.
Overkill - I might use this one with a sniper, but it sacrifices your guile suit, so it's a perk you might want to think twice about.
UAV Jammer - What? Where was he?
Sonic Boom - Don't use...

PERK 3
Extreme Conditioning - Speed class MP5SD... Love it.
Steady Aim - Bullshit way to give crappy aimers the edge in CQC.
Last Stand - Pretty cool, but you can move like you're on a turn table, which is kinda lame... useful if you've unlocked your Deagle.
Martyrdom - Pass.
Deep Impact - Useful if you're good at estimating enemy movements.
Iron Lungs - Very useful if you need that extra few seconds of "oh my god, he doesn't even see me" moments.
Dead Silence - Ch-ch-ch-ah-ah-ah...
Eavesdrop - Annoying.

Anyone else, feel free to post yours!

Well it's weird though, because after playing Multiplayer for so long in CoD4, I went back to play the singleplayer, and I noticed that perks weren't a part of the campaign, which made it feel a little less cool. I LOOOVE character customization. Rainbow Six Vegas has a really good system, giving you every piece of armor and weapon an available upgrade.

Tell me, would you rather have character customization (able to edit the defense characteristics) or have perks?

Like, set how much armor you have and that's it.... because in Vegas, the more you carry the slower you roll which I think is a fair disadvantage. Especially since the sequel (Vegas 2) is much more fast paced than the first.

I definitely prefer Rainbow's customization over Call of Duty's perks. In my eyes perks should be player skill and technique or equipment based, just like in the real world, not a selectable trait.

Yea, no doubt I'm going with Vegas. I'm still tempted to go pick up Vegas 2 and play it sometime. Such an awesome game. I love customization and Vegas made it look good and balance between armor and speed.

I enjoyed Vegas when I had it, very much so. The armor customization is a great concept, and executed to perfection. But that's what makes it Vegas. If CoD adopted this form of customization, it would be Vegas.

I like the perks because they add customization in a unique way. I personally see no problems with the perks. I've played Vegas, and I've played CoD, and I prefer CoD. Everyone has their own opinions, and I just think being able to change your class to help you mid game is great.

Don't get me wrong, going on Shipment against a Juggernauting RPG whore is NOT my idea of fun. But when he misses and gets slain by my knife, it's SOOO satisfying. There's a balance to everything my friends. If you don't like it, by all means stick to Vegas. I might even pop on to play with you =p

Oh I'm by no means saying CoD should adopt the Vegas style of customization. That would be crap and ruin CoD. Perks aren't the end of the world, I'd just prefer not to have them. I don't mind playing with them TOO much though. :)

You know what I'd really like? Just the option to play with perks turned off. Yeah I know, you can do that - but nobody does. Perks aren't meant to be realistic, they're just meant to get people addicted. It's worse than crack! :P

At least if there's gonna be perks in a game, I'd like to see a matchmaking like Halo's right there with it. I might be able to stand that. But you gotta admit, the perks in CoD4 are pretty flippin' crazy.

I actually like the customization in games like Vegas, because it's just fluff for the most part and doesn't really give anyone an edge.
