E3 is over! Glad to see that this year's E3 was just as empty as it was last year (sarcasm, right?). There's a few things that I think they could have changed at the event this time around, but first I'm going to through what I think was "Fat-man-launcher-to-the-face" awesome.

To fire things off, I thought that Fallout 3 was killer. Bethesda is bringing us a world that we've never been introduced to before (without sprites, I might add). Not having had my hands on it just yet, I can't judge how she plays, but the overall look at art style of the game seem unique and though post apocolypitc, vibrant as well. It seems that games lately have had this grungy, and depressing look to them (see Children of Men, please). Gray and brown are the new black for gaming, and it doesn't really look like color is going to make an epic comeback anytime soon; that being said, Fallout 3 crankes up the depression up 100% while absolutely nailing the look of a post apocolyptic Washington DC. The free roam aspect from our favourite RPG's carries over, as do the types of combat from our favourite shooters. Unlike Oblivion, playing Fallout 3 from the third person is actually doable. Camera work, and decent looking attack cutscenes make the game play unlike any other. They give you the choice to play through it guns blazing, or to stratiegically stack moves like a turnbased RPG. Welcome to heavan (with nukes!).

Moving past the warheads to the Microsoft press conference was the coverage heard round the world. The new Xbox Experience is all the rave. A complete dashboard and interface overhaul compeltely rebuilt from the ground up, all delivered through that little port in the back of our Xbox 360's. Never been done before, so lets hope that they pull it off! New features include a crazy-awesome party system which allows 8 person chat, and new "Mii-like" avatars which are fully customizable from shirts, to eye color -- and the best part? Upcoming games are able to include items for your avatars. Example being with the Gears 2 launch later this year, Epic Games might release a sweet hoody for your avatar that's game-themed. Very cool, Microsoft, very cool indeed.

Those were the main highlights for me. Other happenings include a Gears 2 stage demo as well as the announcement that Xbox Live and NetFlix made a deal to sync your que to your 360 with the paid membership. A few new games for MS like "You're in the Movies" will get families playing together more often, which displays the fact that games are now outselling Box Office, Music and DVD sales. Amazing work, gaming.... amazing.

But what was wrong with E3 this year? Well, not being at the event, I can't directly judge -- but that's the main problem. It wasn't open to the public; or even the remotely connected folk (such as Gamestop employees, and so on). Games are made to make money, and to attach gamers to buy the sequel. What better way to do so by getting the gamers in the hands of your game early, right? According to some sources, a public viewing day might occur next year -- perhaps out of sync with the press to avoid a clash of the titans. Peter Moore (former VP of Microsoft Games Division, current EA Sports Headman) for one agrees with the fact that E3 was a letdown this year. EA more than anyone needs to get their gamers attached once more, apparently reporting losses of over 100 million dollars for the first half of 2008.

E3 is all about the games. It's letting the press playing them earlier so they can report online, or in print so the gamers, us, get the skinny on what the deal is in the industry... but especially for those that are directly involved with a full time gamercard, shouldn't we be able to just stop in and try them as well? After all, we're the people that these games are being made for, right?

Well, enough of the rant for now. We'll see how the expo does next year, but until next time I'll be signing off and.... well, signing back on to play Soul Caliber 4.
