Legendary Map: Avalanche
Posted by lukems at 3/18/2008 10:51 PM PDT
Avalanche (AKA Cotton Ball), the second map from next month’s Legendary Map pack – due April 15th for 800 marketplace points (remember, we just make the maps, we don't get to price them) – is a lovingly crafted reimagination of Halo: Combat Evolved classic Sidewinder. It wouldn’t be wholly accurate to call it a “remake,” but elements of Avalanche are certainly culled from Sidewinder – it has the same familiar U-shape, multiple ways from base-to-base, and a whole sandbox full o’ vehicles to play with. But there are many, many changes too.

Designers Niles Sankey and Lars Bakken along with artists Mike Buelterman and Jason Sussman have answered a bunch of questions about Avalanche and hopefully between their answers and the accompanying pictures, what Avalanche is will begin to crystallize.

Check out the lengthy article @ Bungie.net!!

I almost traded in Halo 3 about 2 hours ago... If Vegas 2 had come into my store today it would have happened... Lucky me, I guess! Sidewinder was my favourite Halo map!

Back in those 'ole days playing Halo at a local shop called GameTime, Sidewinder was one of the fav's. Though, most of the guys didn't want to do CTF, so I was forced to play Team Slayer. But that stopped pretty quick once I figured out how to get on top of the level (involves a Ghost and Scorpion), the manager Jimmy aka Frosty didn't like that too much. He was the best player there, you could say he was my gaming role model,. He was able to get on top of Blood Gulch by luanching himself out of a Ghost! I never figured out how he did it. He was also one of those guys who could 3 shot you with a pistol from across the map. I miss those days /cry.

If Halo: CE had been online..oh the possibilities. I wasn't around when Zypher when to Game Time, but I was around when he had 3-4 console Lan Parties on a weekly basis. That's back when I was just introduced to Xbox, thanks to him. :P Good times..

Sidewinder always blew me away because of that main vehicle choke point. Going around the corner near the front of the map was always freaky -- you never knew what to expect.

It's a really good map, but I don't know if I'll get them. I might wait until they become free. If there was another map like foundry that allowed amazing customization, then I'd consider it; but so far, I think that 800 points is a little much for an hour of playtime.
