Straight from FASA Studios comes Shadowrun, the same guys who brought you Crimson Skies and MechWarrior. This game is set in the year 2021. Magic has returned after a 5,000 absence and a mega-coperation, RNA, is trying to harness the magic to make a fat profit by bringing order to a world of chaos. The Lineage, a tribal group, is trying to keep magic free to all, risking eveything to preserve it.

The graphics are next-gen:arcade style, the gameplay is very fast-paced and unique, and overall this game is a keeper.

Graphics: The graphics are pretty arcade-ish, but I personally love this style. The characters are very distinguishable to what you would imagine them to look like. For example, eleves have pointy ears, dwarves are noticably shorter, trolls are very large, etc. The actual characters have outstanding graphics. The troll, for instance, has tough skin, which you can see clearly. Nothing like walking around a corner and seeing a huge, thick arm with a minigun in it!

The maps are also arcade-style, but FASA Studios seems to pull it off...superbly. The maps are fun to play, but also fun to look at. All the maps look different, are at different places. One is at an abandoned trainyard, another seems to be in heavy fog or a cloud. They also did a great job with the graphics concerning the magic, although there really isn't a bar for graphics of magic abilities, so there isn't much to compare it to.

Sound: Shadowrun has your typical sound. Guns each have their own unique sound. The magic makes the sound or sounds you would incorporate it with but, as stated above, there really isn't a bar for magic abilities yet. I was, however, disappointed that there wasn't much sound "from the map," for example, an outdoor map having birds singing. All in all, typical types of sounds you would expect from a next-gen game.

Gameplay: This is where I get excited to talk about. The gameplay is absolutely amazing. It is very fast-paced, but there is also a tactical sense to it. The gameplay has been described as "Counter-Strike with magic." Before each round, you must buy weapons, magic, and/or a tech item. At this menu, you can also view your teammates inventory. You start with $2000, which can get you a weapon or two with some ammo or one magic or tech item. You gain money by what you do in the round. Getting kills, grabbing the artifact (I'll talk more about this later), but you lose money by killing teammates. You also can gain money depending on how your team is doing. You assign your tech and magic to the LT, RB, and LB. You also have an essence meter, which determines what you can do and how many times you can do it before letting the meter recharge.

Each class has an advantage and disadvantage. There are four classes, Elves, Humans, Trolls, and Dwarves. Elves can move the fastest and recharge health over time, but they have a low health count. Humans have normal speed, decent amount of essence and health. Trolls are very slow, but they use their essence to harden their skin as a shield. They have the most health, but are a large target. Dwarves are a small target with a large amount of essence. Dwarves can also drain essence from enemies and allies.

There are three gametypes. Raid, Extraction, and Attrition. In Raid, it is basically CTF, but the flag is an artifact. There is an attacking team and a defending team. The attacking team can either win by capturing the artifact or eliminating the other team. The defending team can win by eliminating the attacking team or defend the artifact until time runs out. In Extraction, it is the same as Raid, but the artifact is located in the center of the map, with both teams trying to capture it. This gametype proves to be the most action-packed of the three. In Attrition, it is a straight Team Deathmatch. All are very fun. Some have been saying that it sucks because you only have one life. Well, once you are dead, your body has to be destroyed or you can be revived if someone purchased that spell. Basically, most people get a couple of lives a round, but rounds are fast anyways.

The only downside is that instead of a single player campaign, there are only six training missions. You can do a solo match against bots, but other than that online is all that is left. This game was made to be an online, multiplayer game.

Online: Since there is no single player, I have pretty much covered this aspect. This is the first cross-platform game, so you can play with people on Xbox LIVE and Window's Vista players. It is up to 16 players. Should see some DLC on the way.

All in all, this is a great game. Gameplay is innovative, online is crazily addicting, and the graphics give a new taste. Although there is no single player, this should not sway your decision.

I give it a 9.2/10. At least do it the honor of renting it. I promise you will go out and buy it the next day.

Thanks for reading.
