Just wondering what some of your favorite pieces are, though if you're like me, it varies somewhat often. My favorite recent piece has been "Bells for Stokowski" by Michael Daugherty. His sax quartet writing is beautiful, I love that he brings Bach into it, and the ending is great.

Ah yes, I've had the privilege of playing both those pieces (including the clarinet solo in Blue Shades :D )

Each Time You Tell Their Story-Sam Hazo
Harrison's Dream-Peter Graham
Journey to the Centre of the Earth-When I first heard Marian was doing this, I dug on the internet for literally 3 hours trying to find a copy. When I found it, I shuddered with ecstasy at how awesome it was.

A few of my favorite pieces I played in high school were:

Tempered Steel by Charles Rochester Young
Where Lark or Eagle Never Flew by James Curnow
Hobbits by Johan De Meij (although we never performed this...we had it in our books at one point my senior year. The entire LotR symphony by De Meij is AWESOME!!)

I will always be partial to Fantasia in G, The Hounds of Spring, and Armenian Dances.
They were the first pieces that really forced me to come into my own as a musician.

I remember staying after band class nearly every day for like ten-fifteen minutes practicing Armenian because I just couldn't play it XD

Do you mean the Timothy Mahr Fantasia or the Bach Fantasia transcribed by Goldman?

And who doesn't love Alfred Reed (I've had the pleasure of playing both Armenians and Praise Jerusalem!)

I love Lux Aurumque!!!!!!!!! I really hope that we get to play it in concert band this year. Eric Whitacre is amazing!

A favorite of mine from middle school was Rites of Tamburo by Robert W. Smith and The Great Locamotive Chase (I played the four mallet part :D).
Last year we played Holst's Suite in Eb and I liked it a lot.

If you like Gillingham that much, you should get in touch with Kurt Gros from Warren Township, I don't think there's a bigger fan than him. If you've heard Supercell alto sax solo with percussion, he's the sax player it was written for. Also, Warren will be playing his new Symphony No. 2 "Genesis" (#1 for Revelation, #2 for Genesis, which I thought was pretty cool) at the IMEA conference this January.

Symphony #2 - David Maslanka

I do like #2, but I think my favorite of his has got to be Symphony #4 (especially the part where the clarinets only play on the mouthpiece and barrel :P ).

Anything by Frank Ticheli or Frank Erickson and American River Songs is fun and Some John Williams Arrangements for concert band are fun to play in my opinion Its fun to play music that you hear and emeorize in your head from movies.
I dont play much hard music because I have never auditioned for a higher band... So sorry if the music is like is Newbie.

Love that piece. I'd like to do a whole marching show with just that song if and when I become a band director.

The Timothy Mahr one.

And I'm pretty sure Alfred Reed was a total freaking genius lol.
Armenian Dances has to be one of the coolest songs to hear and funnest to play.
