Since I'm going to be using Chicago as the basis for my World of Darkness setting, I've been able to consult real-world information as never before. This has been a big difference for me, especially in regard to mapping. I did some limited mapping when running D&D, mostly for encounters and specific locations rather than towns or countries. Since the Forgotten Realms main book came with such an awesome map of the world, I had no need or desire to do more on that account. And although I've had a recurring home base for our main D&D game, I've resisted the urge to map it in favor of spending time on other things more conductive to gameplay. I looked at some maps for our Vamprire the Dark Ages game. I've found some territory maps, showing which empires and such were in play. I looked for some maps of London around 1350 but none of the ones I could find went back quite that far. I used the next best thing and haven't really wanted much more. At least I have an idea of the basic setup. I'm developing the Chicago setting with some reference to game books but largely on my own, so I've been using Google Maps to help me visualize where important things are. Sometimes I just mark well-known spots that the characters are all likely to know (and it helps to mark tourist spots when the PCs are vampires). Other times I've marked very specific places that are of signifigance to supernatural creatures. It helps to see where different influences lie and how things are spaced out. It also helps me to get ideas of which characters are where, and what their relations are, and why. I saw how someone else set up such a map for their game and couldn't wait to try it. I'd recommend it for any DM working in a modern-world setting. |
