I jumped into this thread at the end because I saw my name mentioned, and had to backtrack, and ended up getting so lost in the beginning I forgot why I jumped into this thread until I got to the second page the second time.

So what does all of this mean?

Fuck if I know.

In regards to your question about extreme horror, I'll site two examples as my opinion. The first I experienced personally and I still haven't seen anything that has scared me the way this has.

It was House on Haunted Hill. Some brushed it off as cheesy, but the description you gave about me telling myself it's just a movie, and still being scared? That was totally me. If you're not familiar with the flic, in a nutshell, it's about a possessed ex-mental hospital where creepy doctors and nurses performed ridiculously inhumane acts on their patients. Years later, a millionaire thrill-seeker invites a bunch of seemingly random strangers to stay one night in the house and earn a bunch of money if they survive. He himself is not aware of the possession. Well, the possessed house intervened with the invitations to make sure they went out to the ancestors of the doctors and nurses who tortured the patients, so that the house could get some kind of twisted revenge.

What made this movie so scary, was that up until the very end, this movie wasn't a "chased around by boogie monster" movie. The entire fucking house was alive with a hateful consciousness and wanted these "strangers" brutally murdered. An example of this creepy shit, was when one of the girls is walking around with a video camera. She walks into what appears to be an empty room, but through her camera, she can see doctors operating on a patient while he's alive, conscious, and without pain meds. The victim/patient is shaking and moaning violently with a gag in his mouth, and when she drops the camera she doesn't see them anymore. Next scene she's being dragged up a wall across a ceiling with a blood smear following her and you never see her again. Gives me the chills just thinking about it.

Ok, the second kind of extreme, over the top horror is something I've experienced second-hand, and that's the recent trend of "Saw" and torture movies, like Bordello and La Touristas. This kind of shit I will not watch. The fact that these movies are wildly popular and seem to be cranked out like Britney Spears albums makes me realize just how sick our society is. We live such safe and boring lives that it's come to this. I bet refugees in third-world countries where people deal with family members blowing up wouldn't want to see this shit. We're no different or less barbaric than the Romans and their collesseums. This is the same kind of entertainment meeting the same carnal need they had, but we justify it to ourselves with, "it's just a movie", and can go home guilt free sleeping soundly.

If you're a die hard fan of these kinds of movies, I'm not trying to get personal, this is just my gut reaction to this trend. If you think you can articulate or defend these movies, I'd be interested in hearing it, because no fan I've ever met has tried to make an argument for them, they just shrug and say "I like it." From everything I've learned in my rudimentary psychology classes, people who really get off on these movies, who are on the edge of their seats dying to see the next gorey scene, are not whole people. Something in their emotional growth and development is lacking or got a little warped.

Ah hell, I went and stereotyped, and didn't want to do that. I'm sure there are some who are fascinated with these movies for weird reasons I wouldn't anticipate or understand, but I don't like it. I was sickened enough with our society before this trend.

Oi vei, I need to move to Europe...

Fuck if I know.

Well, this thread originally had to do with me creating "Hellraiser: The Roleplaying Game" for my friends.

A few twists and turns later, come to find out, I won't ever get the opportunity to play with them, because they are moving back home for the summer (I live in a college town and they are students), and by the time they get back, I will (hopefully) be moved away.

So... I began a rant, saying I should lock them in my basement and force them to play rpgs with me...

... and, well, the whole "gamer chick down in the basement" gag started again.

Then, since this thread is dead... the thread is dead, fred, that's what I said, fred... I linked this thread to your other thread with the "gamer chick in the basement" joke so I could get Freston to come over there.

Trust me, it'll make sense, just read this post again. Slowly this time. :P

But... thanks for the "extreme horror" post... even if a little late.... (I agree with you on horror movies though... if I just wanna watch someone torture or kill people, I can watch CNN... movies should have ghosts, monsters, demons, roleplayers, or other scary creatures).

Oh no, I read the whole post. It was amusing and distracting at the same time, which is why I wrote the response I did because I noticed not many people answered those questions.

I'm honestly surprised you agree with me about the extreme gore movies.

That made me assume that's what you were into, but I see from this comment:

shows me that our taste in horror is nearly identical. I especially love demon horror, because that's much more fantasy to me and much less horror. Overall I'm not a big fan of horror films. My imagination is already over active, and with as much time as I spend alone, horror films make it so much worse because I'll actually have something tangible to anchor my imagination on.

shows me that our taste in horror is nearly identical.  I especially love demon horror, because that's much more fantasy to me and much less horror.  Overall I'm not a big fan of horror films.  My imagination is already over active, and with as much time as I spend alone, horror films make it so much worse because I'll actually have something tangible to anchor my imagination on.

I do love gore horror! Specifically, over the top gore horror. I haven't seen Grindhouse yet, but I don't doubt that I'll love it.

What I don't like is slasher films with just some guy or people killing people. House of 1000 Corpses was just a waste of film, in my opinion. But Hellraiser rocks, and it is over-the-top gory, too.

Zombies get my mojo running, also. Especially Zombie flicks with "special effect" zombies (for example, the first and third (but not that awful second!) Return of the Living Dead films). By special effect Zombies I mean, not just people in bad makeup acting like they're sleepwalking... I mean, the crazy stuff that makes your eyes bug out.

I loved Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn. All that over-the-top shit just kills me.

Some of Nightmare movies are good, too. Number 1 was awesome.

But, psycho killers and mutant hick cannibal families and shit like that? Nah, that's not horror. That's just another day in the life. I want my horror to have unreal stuff... monsters and demons and roleplayers and all those things that go bump in the night. (Well, usually when I go bump in the night, it's followed by an "oww my toe!" which probably isn't all that scary).

EDIT: Oh, and spiders! I don't like spiders. I don't like spiders a LOT. So, a decent horror movie with spiders is likely to make me jump out of my seat and hide behind it... which is exactly what a horror movie should do! I hate spiders... I love horror movies featuring them. (Eight Legged Freaks wins my Razzie award for worst spider movie ever).

House on Haunted Hill was good, and the Evil Dead trio. I'm also a sucker for the Blair Witch Project (1 of course).

Ah, you are welcome! But it's going here in that direction too. Just slower. You've probably heard that British kids beat people up just so they can tape it? It's sick. The riots in France. We have Faces of Death on both DVD and in the daily news.

------

Oh and when it comes to Europe, there is no 'we'. You either side with the Germans or the French, the British side with the US and the Scandinavians are right. Always.

You're right, I did hear about some of that appalling stuff going on in Britain, and sadly shook my head the way I always do when I hear something like that.

I didn't know the second bit of your post, that modern Europeans would still be just as clique'y as you learn they were in history.

Maybe I should run off and join one of those supposedly "utopian" communes. As long they had cable internet and hot gamer DM chicks locked in basements, man I'm golden. I also need a little :smoking: but that grows anywhere in the wild...

So A Clockwork Orange has become reality, eh? Somehow that doesn't particularly surprise me.... Sorry to hear it, though. That is pretty crazy.

Re: Utopian communities-- I've got the cable internet, but still no basement... Freston has one, though... maybe we can start a commune?

Do you know what's really sick? What's really sick is that, if we had the H.G.C. in the basement, all we'd do is play D&D with her!!!

"Roll that D20!!! Do it!!! Do it now!!!" :dm:

Of course, if any of us were feeling particularly sadistic, we could make her play Hero System, instead. That could break even the strongest mind....

"Roll 25d6!!! Now!!! Now, count them twice, once getting the actual total, and once counting 1's as 0, 2-5 as 1, and 6's as 2!!! Now!!! Do it!!!"

Man, I am twisted.... :P

I had forgotten all about that movie. Yes, that was pretty crazy. And not far from the truth sometimes.

And although I was exaggerating about Europe, when I read it back I saw there is more truth to it than I care to admit. That is why the EU is much more loosely knit than the US. There is so much difference in the cultures of the participating countries. And each wants to protect their own culture.

As I said, there is no real 'we'. There's just is no way to compare Luxembourg with 460,000 inhabitants to Germany with 83,000,000 inhabitants. Not to mention Sark, with 610 inhabitants and all the other little countries with pop < 100,000.

Sure! Than you can help me with the maintenance, 'cause I've been slacking for a while ;)

Enough room in the basement, that is, if you like your Hot Gamer Girls wet... I've had some trouble with leakage.

That is an awesome picture, dude. That would be so cool to see/explore for real, instead of just looking at a picture.

*Scottish accent* Ai? Wha..?

I'd think you're inviting yourself over  Have a look at what's in my basement....

But it's water, just water. I thought you would bring Gamer Chicks.

Now what am I DM'ing tomorrow? I'm thinking mindless violence, pure evil and something in the basement of a ruin. Hmmm.....

What was that Hellraiser again?
