Valefor mentioned this development just before I had to leave for school so I didn't even have time to look it up. For the first time in a long time there will be no Dungeon or Dragon magazines published; once their licenses are up in September, both of magazines will be moved entirely to an online format.

What do you guys thinkg about this move?

On one hand, it does reduce costs, since printing is a costly process, and it'll guarantee that anyone with access to the net will have access to the content (instead of having to wait for the mail or track down a game store). There's no telling how the format and layout of the magazines might change, though it seems that they'll continue to run both magazines online. I wonder if they'll combine them into one? I've looked at both sites and still haven't been able to find information on the basic format they're going to use - I mean, will the issues be in .pdf or what?

While I enjoy online content, it can be nice to get something in the mail each month, something you can hold in your hands. I prefer printed materials for longer reading and I prefer the feel of pages. I am also very wary of the price of online materials. A lot of roleplaying books are sold at prices very near to those of printed materials, even though no printing was done. I do not appreciate the high prices of a lot of online .pdf products, though some are quite reasonably obtainable. But considering I let my subscription to Dragon run out, I don't think I'm their target audience for these changes.

lame.

Online content can be unrealiable and "buggy" and the pdf books are really hard to search. Even using the "search" function, it's easy to overlook what you need when it's on the screen.

But here's another question, Redisbest - do you have a subscription to either magazine, or do you buy either of them regularly? I'm wondering if WotC's marketing people didn't do a study and find out that most of their regular customers were online folks. Then maybe they got to thinking (and they really shouldn't be allowed to do so unsupervised): hey, if our customers are mostly online, then the magazines should be online! Because everybody who's somebody has a computer nowadays! And who the hell uses snail mail anymore anyway?

I don't subscribe to anything since with bouncing back and forth between school and home, mail gets backed up and either place and it's frustrating. Campus mail is not as good at forwarding as they claim to be...

However, at least two members of my group subscribe to Dungeon, and another to Dragon. I'd just convinced the gaming store where we play to start carrying Dungeon so that I and a couple other students could pick it up when we came in to play. Most members of my group do not own a home computer, so they say they're pretty much done with Dragon and Dungeon.

But then, I've just thought of something- I do have regular computer access. heh. It could be pretty sweet to be the on "in the know" instead of behind the curve for once. :D
