So, I stumbled across the official Dragonlance movie site just now and got to thinking about it. I was never a big Dragonlance fan but I thought the first book was amusing. Valefor knows more about it than I do. We'll probably see it in any event.

I noticed that the screenplay is being written by a guy who's worked on Xena and Hercules, so I looked up the actual episodes he did. Let's just say that I hope he's grown since then; those episodes could have been a lot better. The site does say that the screenwriter's a HUGE Dragonlance fan, which could be a good thing.

But! The voice cast could offer something special. Lucy Lawless is Goldmoon and they got Kiefer Sutherland for Raistlin, and both of them are very talented people. The other folks all have a lot of voice work in their histories, too (except for Michelle Trachtenburg. Why the fuck did they have to choose her? I couldn't stand her on Buffy!).

I looked at the concept art and it seems nice, but I really have to wonder if the finished film will look anything like that. If it does, then it should be really nice to watch. I know they're doing production in like India and Korea.

There's talk on their message forums that the movie will go straight to DVD but no one seems to know for sure. They're hoping to get a theater release and to lead up to a trilogy but... I dunno. It seems like the straight to DVD release is the done deal and they don't want to admit it, because that'll pretty much screw their chance at real profit, visibility, and sequelization.

All in all, the "official" web site could look more official and interested in selling the picture. I really don't get the impression of great excitement from it. And while a music section is interesting, I really couldn't give a fuck about people who've been inspired to write music based on DL. I want to hear something like what might be in the film.
