I've been wanting to gather my scattered thoughts about the issue in one place without bothering with the frame of a review, so I figured I'd start a thread here. I'm also very interested to know what anyone else thought about the issue, and you don't have to write anything fancy, either - just talk about what caught your eye.

  • Cover art: I'm a sucker for those cute little modron drawings. Di Terlizzi did them wonderfully but whoever did the cover did a good job, too.
  • Heironeous article: I've started to read the article a couple of times and almost made it through, but I swear it starts to bore me before I can finish. It doesn't help that so many pages were dedicated to this article, either. But I like the map of the temple, so I came away with something good.
  • Not so sure about the whole Orcus slaying Primus and then taking over before another modron ascended thing, but hey. It's been a long time since I looked over the second edition materials for the modrons so I'll have to do that for a comparison. But it's good to see the modrons again and the Planescape milieu. The thing that I notice is that Planescape has a way of bleeding into various products. Pretty much whenever the planes come into play, Planescape is there, whether or not it's named directly.
  • I kinda liked the article about ancient characters. The article brings up issues for PCs and NPCs, though NPCs are more likely to be ancient. I'm not sure how I feel about the mechanical component of the article. If I was running a game with ancient PCs I'd probably give them one of the effects for free since feats are rather precious and the effects are supposed to be an expression of how you've dealt with getting older. For some reason though the article also reminded me of Planescape. The Kissed by the Ages spell seemed to be begging for a planar adventure. It also occured to me that some planar races are quite long-lived or essentially immortal, so they might develop the qualities the article describes. Last but not least, the Voice of Bitter Experience and Apostle of the Forgotten seemed fitting for characters that might end up on the planes.
  • I thought the ecology of the kopru was going to be boring but I actually enjoyed it. It really gives the sense of a formerly great underwater race, whose ruins are still available.
  • I'm not that happy with the updates to the Forgotten Realms timeline as encapsulated in the Cormanthor article but I tend to have problems with most story arcs once the Seven Sisters/Chosen of Mystra get involved. Call it a pet peeve. In any event, a whole grip of the Forgotten Realms NPCs were involved (Scyllua and Fzoul and Jezz oh my!). I do like the close-up map of Cormanthor that's provided; it's a keeper.
  • Okay, I don't play Eberron but I was amused by the halfing mob family detailed in the Dragonmarks article. I had also never seen anything about affiliations before since I haven't really read the PHB II, but I like it - I like it a lot. I'm wondering if any affiliations have been outlined for Forgotten Realms. Does anyone know?
