Hello !

Do ypu allow players in our groups to develop new spells ?

If so what have they created so far and how much of their suggestions have gone right to the Trashcan or been so extrem or silly that you just must share it with others.

Curious !!!!

Certainly I allow players to come up with new spells. Hell, I wish that all my players took that kind of initiative!

The core rules actually stipulate how new spells should be added to your game. Unfortunately, they offer very little in the way of guidelines for developing these new spells. The only thing you can do as a DM is to compare them to existing spells from the PHB and try to spot any obvious loopholes. Sometimes such loopholes are there by accident, sometimes not. Most of the time, it's just a poor choice of words.

With regards to how many make it...well, even the best of us has problems on that front. I consider myself pretty good with the rules and with creating new material. However, I've written some spells and sent them to the Archive editors, only to have them shot down so badly that it's best to completely throw away everything and start over from scratch. For every spell on the D&D Archive, there are three that just didn't make the cut...and even those spells that did make it required basic editing. In short, it's an art.
In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge-

Fix is right, making good, balanced spells is an art - and it can be a real pain in the ass. As far as I'm aware, my players have been pretty happy to use the spells that have been published; no one's asked to make a new one. If someone did want to try I'd certainly let them go to it, but I'd probably let the whole group review the results.
