Since rangers are able to cast spells at 4th level, does this mean they are considered spellcasters when it comes to using things like wands, scrolls, staffs, etc.? For example, can my ranger at 1st level pick up and use a scroll of cure light wounds? |

It depends on what triggers the item. For example, no, at 1st level, your ranger would not be capable of using the wand of cure light wounds because cure light wounds is not on his spell list. However, if it were a wand of summon nature's ally I, then you could use it. By the same token, you couldn't use a scroll of summon nature's ally I because you have to be able to actually cast the spell to use it. For more info, follow the link. |

Okay, so the SRD says:
But the phrasing isn't an ironclad "no"; the text makes it sound like the character might make a mistake but could still try. It's been a bit since I've been on the D&D scene; can anyone clear this up for me? I thought I remembered seeing rules for using magic items/spells above your level or something. |

Incorrect. You can attempt to use it by making a pitifuly small DC to prevent a mishap. Assuming you don't botch this easy roll, you cast the spell normally. |

I knew I remembered something about a roll. We've never used these rules in our group but they are out there. |

Fix is correct by my reckoning. |
