Well, As some of you by now know, I have got the D&D bug again, after 13 years of hiding.

Anyways, I have been thinking of an adventure for a beginer player (my girlfriend, who'll probably have 2 NPC characters helping her). I tend to get carried away with my adventures, and as I will be using 3.5 (I dont even have the books yet, and dont know how it works), I am hoping for a bit of advice.

KAISA - If you a reading this, stop now, it may mess it up for us!!!

Basically the adventure (which will be of many parts - I want to make a long story so she can learn as she plays) will be based around the 'Seven Wizards' (may be Changed to Priests) who are obssessed with their god of destruction, and are seeking a way to summon him/her to the world.

Each of these Wizards use a 'Crystal of Power' to directly communicate with their god. To summon the god, these Wizards need to obtain the pearl of power, a magical device that can draw from all the crytals the initial power it needs to activate the gateway. (An entire village will also need to be sacrificed to open the gateway).

The first part of the adventure will start when the Young Wizard Karassas needs a victim to recharge his Crystal (they loose 15HP per day, and once they drop to 25hp, they loose their magical properties), so he decides to take the local Lords son, and sacrifice him. The Wizard will be around level 2/3 and will have Kobolds as gaurds. (One thing I have made a note of is that Once the Wizards have established a base, the area around it will be surrounded by a small desert area, probably 30 feet per Wizard level {Dark Sun influence here} that is used by the crytsal to empower the god by destroying all plant life in that radius)

Anyways - as a new character and new to 3.5, what sort of monsters should I have in the first part of the adventure? Whats tips do you have?

Thanks.

By the way : The wizard will not die, the Crystal has certain powers, one of these is Teleportation - he will flee in the final Battle, leave clues to the next adveture for the PCs and set up base elsewhere.

Not much has changed from edition to edition regarding low-level baddies. Goblin or kobold slaves are a good start, as are henchmen. The only problem with these ideas is that these people would be easier for the wizard to sacrifice for his crystal than the lord's son, so there needs to be a good reason why he hasn't done so (perhaps his favored henchman is also his brother or something). Low-level undead are still a good staple as well. Perhaps all of the people that get sacrificed to these crystals get raised as skelletons or zombies by the act of this dark god sucking their souls out. If you make these wizards priests as you said you might, they have the power to rebuke or even command the undead, which makes it an ideal situation.

As a side note, don't go making any hard decisions about things until you have a firm grasp of the new ruleset. You might end up wanting to make these seven wizards multiclassed wizard/clerics, for example. Multiclassing is MUCH easier than it used to be.
In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge-
