Just wondering about something... How does this spell work from a game world mechanics standpoint? I mean, is it just a static illusion that also sheds light? I know its a weird question but...hey...

I think of it more as an ethereal type flame. It has all the properties of a flame except that it does not produce smoke or actually burn anything. So to me I see it as I guess a magical illusion of flame as you pointed out. |

The spell is neither Ethereal, nor Illusion. It is, by it's very nature and tag, an Evocation spell. It also has a sub-filter tag [light] also associated with it. What this means, to me at any rate, is that with this spell you are accessing a small permanant pocket of the quazi/pseduo plane of Light. The reason for this spell existing in flames, in my mind, is because the originator of the spell researched it to do so. Personally, I'd see no difference in creating a similar spell that did not waver like flames. Now back in the semi-old days of 2e this spell would have likely had an Illusion tag as well (to describe the flame effects), however 3e steered away from multi-tagging spells and as such the flame piece is what we like to call 'flavor text'. |

So the gold ole Continual Light spell is gone? Remember way back in the day when you could cast that at a monsters eyes and cause blindness? I'm talking wayyy back, like when ELF was a character class instead of a race! |

Yes, I remember back then, and that that tactic was actually a fairly good one. I also remember the one small sentence in the back of 1e wherein it stated that your character was immune to psionics if you had some sort of mental illness. Surprisingly most of my characters were crazy (to some form of psychosis or another), I wonder if I was a powergamer? I also remember when there wasn't a 1e. When all you had was the red box. Ok, I'm stopping now because that makes me feel really old. |

Well I can go up, I also remember when playing this game would make you go crazy, see homeless people as goblins, kill your parents with an axe, and then hang yourself in the basement because your character died. Man, those were the days. |
