So I've had my wisdom teeth kinda poking out of my gums for maybe six months now. Every now and again they'd be a little tender but that's it.

Last night, I woke up from the pain.

Okay, so I take some ibuprofen or something and go back to sleep.

Wake up this morning. Do some errands. Play some computer games. Jaw starts to hurt in that throbbing/numbing way again.

Go look in mirror.

OH SWEET JEBUS! I got this vision of Aliens, only instead of coming out of my chest it's coming out of my inflamed gums. Igh. I swore I would never get my wisdom teeth taken out but I just changed my mind. So I made an appointment to go see my dentist, who I haven't visited in over 3 or 4 years, for a preliminary exam at 9:30 am on Friday.

Wait, it gets better: I'm covered under a different health plan now -- one that's not 100% coverage and one that's not direct-bill. I have to go to the dentist, pay the dentist, and THEN submit the receipts to my husband's insurance company to see if they deign to reimburse us for any or part of the expenses. Oh yeah, this is gonna be loads of fun...

And in the meantime, I'm stuck with this hyper-sensitive, ugly, swollen bulbuous red and purple gummy mass that's threatening to take over the tooth next to the incoming "wisdom" one...

I think the funniest part of all is my mother trying to comfort me from the horrors of wisdom teeth surgery: "well your sister got to eat custard for a week!" It made me giggle, because I like custard, and because I highly doubt custard will make up for the pain of having four teeth yanked out bloodily by someone who probably won't give me enough anesthetic... (I tend to need a lot.) Not to mention that even I'd get sick of custard after a week.

Well, if it helps. I had mine pulled recently and suffered no real pain. All four of them yanks and the worst it felt like was that I had been jabbed a couple of times on each side of the face.

Wish you were over here I'd give you my oral surgeon as a recommendation. He was super, except they're still trying to work out the whole billing thing. My insurance should cover the $1,200+ but yet for some reason they're not wanting to do so. Go fig.

Anyway, the good thing is you can have milkshakes (just no straws!), which makes everything better. Make sure you use some ice to stop the swelling after the surgery and change those cotton swabs every hour and it'll all be fine.

*twitch* I feel stabbing pain when they bother with novocaine (sp!). I've had freaking needles that actually hurt. (Admittedly, more due to the nurse playing darts with it than anything else, but still...) Me + dental work beyond routine stuff = not a good record pain-wise. Oh well, at least I haven't had malpractise. I'm just extremely pain-sensitive.

*gasp* I think I know what our tax returns are going towards this year.... (I just finished doing them up, and realized how advantageous it is to be a full-time student, and contribute to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan...) I need a new pair of glasses too. So much for our plan of a trip to London. :P

Why no straws? *confused* Will this be like when I pierced my tongue only in four parts of my mouth instead of one? And more painful? And requiring even more care?

How long do those stay on? *wondering how this will work at place of employment*

Actually I believe the total bill was in the neighborhood of $1500, but I paid $300 of it that my insurance didn't cover. Yeah, I'm having issues with my insurance company.

Straws are bad because they create suction which can break the blood clots loose. Your not to use a straw for a week because of this. I went with two just to be on the safe side. If your blood clot breaks loose after it's been formed you could get dry socket which, from what I'm told, is very painful. Imagine nerves that are open (and extremely sensitive) to air. So even breathing through one's mouth causes fiery pain to shoot through your jaw. Or something like that.

The swabs are nothing but 2x2's (two-inch by two-inch pieces of gauze) that you place over the gum area where your wisdom teeth used to be. You keep changing them every hour until you can pull them out and they're not soaked in blood, or even a little bit of blood. For example, I changed mine every hour, on the hour (save for when I slept I got up every two hours for three times) and it took me almost two days to stop bleeding to the point I didn't really need the gauze anymore.

Of course, with mine, one of my wisdom teeth was impacted to the point of resting on the nerve that runs down your jaw, and the roots had barbed into my jaw muscle. But basically it was sitting down on my jaw bone so it was really deep in there. That one bled the most. When you go in you should get a sheet that has all sorts of instructions, I suggest you follow them. ;)

One of the things it suggests is warm salt-water, although I didn't try this I've been told it helps. Also don't be afraid to continue brushing. Good oral hygene is important during the process to ensure that nothing gets infected.

And if all else fails they should prescribe you some pretty good drugs to numb the pain afterword if you have any. Although for me I didn't take any. But then, I'm a freak and can turn off most pain.

I forgot, when putting the 2x2's in your mouth, I found what worked best for me was to fold it so the two ends that touched faces out to my cheeks. This kept my tongue from having to catch the edges of the 2x2's and driving me nuts. But then to each their own.

Also, the stitches will come out on their own so don't play with them like most people are tempted. They usually come out after a day or two, but mine for example took several days, with the last one taking almost five days to come out.

Yeah, I've come to hate my orthodontist. Just had my braces tightened today, and I have to take two excedrin 45 minutes before I eat just so I can chew my damn food without cursing the entire time. Of course, that can't be half as bad as the wisdom tooth thing, but it's still rather inconvenient and infuriating. Nobody wants an old man with shaky hands and fat fingers doing delicate techniques with one's mouth. He makes me regret that humans didn't evolve to have venom sacs.

I need to have mine done but don't want to. It cost me personally 1600 dollars out of pocket when I got two crowns done because my serial rapist denist in Tallahassee would only use procedures that insurance wouldn't cover, that asshole.

I need to find a new dentist here who will actually work with my insurance. I should really get them done because they're causing other problems.

Well the swelling has subsided to just being inflamed, and not gross and weird. and the pain has turned into stiffness/numbness in the lower right jaw. Which I'm fairly certain means that one's impacted and interfering with the major nerve ending(s) that are supposed to be in that area.

I know just by looking at the angle the other lower tooth is coming in at that it'll be impacted too. Not sure about my top ones; I'm crossing my fingers and holding my breath and wishing hard.

Dental work is one of the few things I actually get anxious about anymore. I'm hoping they can give me more than just a local anesthetic. Everything online says there's a range of options, but none of those pages are Canadian either. And my guess is that it will cost more. I will undoubtedly need some painkillers; probably pretty strong ones.

Not playing with the stitches will drive me nuts -- I constantly play with my tongue piercing. Thanks for that advice, and all the other bits, though. :) I know they'll give me a sheet, but the more I find out about this the sooner, the less worried I'll be.

Geh. Now the area around the tooth feels a bit like a cold sore. It's driving me nuts. :banghead:
