My brother and I have a small little production company, making short little movies that entertain us. My friend and myself have been interested in sword combat for a long time, have taken fencing courses, and have done fight choreo for local productions. It's come to my attention that for all these interests, it would be very satisfying to have real swords. Between all of us, I'm the only one that has any real swords (my t'ai chi chuan sword, and my historical Chinese militia replica). I don't use these for much besides decoration and prop. My aforementioned friend has a purely decorative sword that he didn't realize was purely decorative until after using it in combat versus deadly trees of doom...he stopped that real quick when a sword dealer told him that decorative swords tend to explode into shrapnel when used in such a way... Anyway, getting to the point. I've been looking at prices and stuff for stage steel. The problem is, none of us are able to spend too much money at the moment. I'm pretty much the only one that isn't perpetually scraping for money, and I'm about to sign the lease on a new apartment with a 1.5k downpayment...I can't be spending $300 on swords. Furthermore, we don't LARP, we aren't employed in a real production company...these swords aren't vital to us, they'd just be nice to have. All this means that I'm looking for the lowest priced, best deal I can get. What I want is two "generic" swords for re-enacting, stage combat, mock duels, etc. They need to be able to stand up to actual blows and blocks without any real damage to the blade. Just your basic cruciform single-handed sword, blade length in the 26"-30" range. Scabbards aren't a necessity. Un-edged blades and un-pointed tips are, obviously. My searching has come up with this:
I've also found, from a different company, a 24" blade single-handed broadsword with no scabbard for $92. My demands are probabally fairly...erm, unreasonable...but I'd really like to find a slightly larger blade for ~$75. I don't really want to pay much more than ~$150 for the pair... So, since I know Fixxxer is a big weapons collector, I thought I'd post here and ask for the advice of those with more Knowledge ranks and XP. |

Just a thought: Check with your local SCA. They'll have someone that can do basic metalsmithing/swordmaking and might just let you in on a steal of a deal (pun intended!). You can feint interest to the SCA if that'll get you a better discount. |

Okay, just checked it out... My local SCA chapter is listed as "incipient" and is one of the only ones that doesn't even have a web page... Hmm, looks like my loccal SCA is going to prove either hard to contact, or non-existant. Maybe I'll ask my uncle, who has some contacts that have contacts within the local Ren Faire company... Also, was the "feint" pun intended? |

Yes, I'm glad you caught it.
I'm at least aware of the difference between feign and feint. Or at least, I try to be. The local Ren Faire might be another good avenue to pursue. They usually have blacksmiths/weapons-makers that do some tinkering on the side. Often than not they're involved with the SCA and make some of their gear, or at leas that's the case that I've seen. In any event, if you've got yourself access to a nice grinder and a junkyard, one could easily make a cheap "stage" sword from a leaf spring. Hell, I'd give you a hand with that if I was in your neck of the woods. |

Okay, I won't mention the post recently where you spelled "segue" "segway". Hmmm... + =

Well, truth be told I can spell pretty well most of the time. But I'll admit I spelled segue "segway" simply because my brain was thinking of those cool Segways. You know how much they cost tho? Lots of cash. But still a cool ride. |

Every time I see someone on one of those, I have an intense desire to knock them off with a big stick. |

I've made many, many leaf-spring swords in my day. So far as I know, all of them are still functioning perfectly. Gimmie a few minutes to look around.... ... Alright, I've got it. I have one of these myself. I've had it for years and it's been an exceptional blade. It's nicely tempered to act as state steel and it comes with no edge. It does come with a scabbard, which is a good thing, since it helps keep the blade clean. Speaking of which, it bares mentioning that because this is high-carbon steel (and not stainless steel, like a wall-hanger), you will have to take good caref of this blade, cleaning and oiling it at least once per week. If you don't, it will rust and it'll rust badly. Regardless, check this out: http://www.atlantacutlery.com/webstore/eCa...ng%20Sword.aspx I'm not sure if you're planning on making DragonCon this year or not, but since this company is located in Atlanta, you could save yourself the shipping charges if you picked them up while at the con. Of course, the con would be an even better place to pick up a sword, since you get to pick and choose. |
| In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge- | |

Ugh...I love Atlanta Cutlery, I should've just checked them out in the first place...This looks like exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks a ton, Fixx. And unfortunately, no, I can't make DragonCon this year I probably won't be in a financial situation that permits conning for a year or so (although there's a slim chance I'll make TorontoTrek this summer).
