It had been a bright and sunny day as four adventurers traveled together Northward down the King's Highway. They were as different as night and day. There was Drusilia, a female human who was dark and mysterious in her own way; Thurg, a large half-orc who seemed somewhat dim witted but quick with a sword; Rumil Vardamir, a muscular elf with a grim look but of a pure and pious heart; and Jack Daniel, a lithe and illusive rogue.

The trek had been uneventful and the four adventurers had begun to wonder if today would be another day of a continual trudge with no sign of wealth or adventure to be found. The traffic had been heavy as is usual along the trade route between Freeport and Rosethorn, but as the noon day sun had begun to slip slowly towards dusk the traffic had fallen suprisingly sparse.

Just ahead, the adventurers spotted a small sign. It read:

Lugard

One Hour's Walk

Beware of Bandits
"Love makes the world go round. And has been known to provide a +2 circumstance to certain skill checks."

A slow smile spread across Dru's face as she read the sign. Finally, the long monontous bordom would be lifted. She would be able to prove herself in battle, and unless her anger. She so loved battles.

Who should she help? One one hand, Jack was nice, but the half-orc Thrug wasn't too bad either... Jack, since the half-orc most likely would not know what she was doing with him.

Jack, I am going to cast a spell on you that will let us talk at a distance, ok? I have to touch you to make it start though, so come a little closer.

Ooc: If Jack does not disagree, I cast message on him. Lvl 0 spell, PHB 253. That leaves me with 4 level 0 spells. And I take out one of my daggers.
Ooc:If I throw a dagger, will it break? I remeber in the PHB it saying that a arrow or bolt or stone breaks 50% of the time, but I cannot remeber if it said that about thrown weapons.

Thrug paused to read the sign. He could read, just not very well. Sounding it out a little at a time he was able to get it. Reading and writing were important to him. With a smug feeling of self confidence from reading such big words Thrug whistled to himself as the troup walked. Then it hit him... bandits are bad. Desiding it would be best to be on guard he kept quit while they moved on.

Jack eyes the sign, with utter contempt. "I hate bandits, though they usually have the best swag out there."

"I don't think we have anything to worry about. Only a moron would attack us with Thrug standing guard." pointing toward Thrug

turning to Drusilia and flashing his dimpled boyish grin "I love it when you talk dirty to me." "This message won't be loud will it?"

Rúmil took a deep breath after reading the sign. Bandits were nothing but trouble and it would be a rare day in which Fharlanghn would not watch over him and his traveling companions, and yet...yet Rúmil worried for the other travelers. Obviously his groups trek was brought this path due to Fharlanghn's will and so he would do what he could to help other travelers.

“It would appear we walk on troubled trails my friends, but let us not worry. Young Jack is right bandits would be foolish to attempt anything with our sturdy friend Thurg here. Yet we must be vigilant else we be made the fools. Let us make haste to Lugard, perhaps we can learn more about these bandits and put a stop to them once and for all. Everyone should have the freedom to travel wherever their heart may take them.”

Dru' smiled slyly at Jack, saying, "No, it will be naught but a whisper..."

The parties mood changed at the sight of the sign in differing ways. The sorcerer seemed to welcome the possible battle, while the Cleric seemed only resigned to it's possibilities. The fighter on the other hand, just wanted to bash something.

If they had thought the sign only a precautionary measure, their hopes were dashed when in the next few minutes of their walk they came upon what appeared to be the remains of an attack. A merchant's wagon lay overturned, it's wheels smashed and its seat stained with what appeared to be dried blood.

Rúmil’s eyes, ever alert, were scanning the brush alongside the road, attempting to see any potential signs of danger. Before anyone could say anything Rúmil held his right index finger up to his lips to gesture to his companions to be quiet so his keen elven ears could listen. He’d been alive for many a year and he wasn’t as tempted to rush in without at the least being aware of his surroundings. That is to say, he intended to live many more years, and a bit of patience was worth its weight in gold.

While he listened and scanned the surrounding area, ever aware of a potential threat, Rúmil’s mind was attempting to solve the scenario that was before them. How long ago had this travesty occurred? Who, or what, could have done this? Did anyone survive and if so which way did they flee? These questions he intended to find out, looking for tracks and clues around the wagon once he was assured that the situation wasn’t an elaborate trap. Too many times he'd seen what happened to those who were eager to help another. May Fharlanghn guide them in their spiritual paths in the afterlife, he thought somberly.

Rumil scanned the woods and the path for anything suspicious, but other than the overturned cart there was nothing out of place. Content that no immediate threat was in the area, Rumil turned his attention to the wagon. Whatever had happened seemed to have happened several days earlier and any tracks that may have been left had long since been swept away by the weather.

As Rumil searched the wagon he found that any goods that had been in the wagon had disappeared along with the merchants who had accompanied the wagon. The only clues discovered were the blood on the seat and some broken branches leading into the woods. Rumil attempted to follow the trail but lost it within a few feet into the dense undergrowth of the forest.

Pools of deep dark blood stained the ground, seeping into its every pore, corrupting the once rich fertile earth, wtih malevolence, made manifest.

Dru's eyes widened at the sight, of the blood-soaked scene, and her smile vanished. Merchants, attacked on a road, and left to fend for themselves. It made her very sad, to see this, for she knew they had been alone, and knew it well. She would try her best to find the killers.

Jack immediately draws his crossbow. He begins scanning from side to side. Thinking that it may be best to get a different vantage point, he nods to Drul while tapping his ear, and heads off into the woods. *searching, hiding, moving silently*

Thinking to himself that the attack doesn't look recent, but who knows what clues the attackers may have left behind. Jack wasn't in the mood to delve too deep into the events of this attack...too many old wounds still not entirely healed there.

"See anything, Jack?" Dru' asked him as he went scouting into the woods.

The party continued to investigate the scene but whatever clues had been at the scene had long since vanished. Jack scouted into the woods, following the broken branches for a while, but just as Rumil had found, all he could tell was that something, possibly the body of the merchant, had been dragged into the woods. Unfortunately time had covered the tracks too deeply to be followed.

Thrug wandered around the cart as the others searched. He wondered why the others were so intent on staying in the battlefield while the battle was so obviously over. There could be a REAL battle somewhere.

"This wagon am in everyones way. Thrug try and fix it!" With that Thrug summoned what strength he had and attempted to set the wagon right on its smashed wheels.

/OOC: Not sure how much the wagon weighes. I should be able to push five times my max load (2000lbs).

Also, what type of wagon are we dealing with here?

The half-orc summoned all of his strength and slowly lifted the wagon off of its side and back upright. A slow groan of wood snapping and bending was heard and what was left of the axles broke in half with the wagon falling to the ground in a loud crash.
