I have a character that I get to play in a solo game occasionally, and I very much enjoy playing her. She's very much a LN character and her thought processes are fun to experience.

The thing is, I am not sure that she has a snowball's chance in hell of surviving the next game session and because it is a solo game, if she does die then it's game over. This is very depressing on one hand because I enjoy the character so much and I don't get to play very often. On the other hand, though, she is going to continue on the path she's on until the showdown and there's no stopping her. She's trying to do everything she can think of to bring the odds more in her favor but she is a lower-level character.

Have you folks had anything similar happen to you?

I haven't had very many opportunities to do solo games. Sure there's been times during a big game where my character might wander off and do something that's akin to what they're likely to do, but never any constant one-on-one games.

All I can suggest is that if you character is smart, they might have contingencies set in place to ensure that even if she does die that either her body is recovered and raised or vengence is extracted upon the individual responsible for their death.

It depends on the character's own fear of death. I've had characters that have stood in the path of certain doom and only because of lucky rolls was I able to survive by party members dragging them off using various means. I've also had characters that have run at the first sign of trouble, always claiming that they 'weren't combatants!'

I guess the question you have to ask is how does the character react to their own demise and what resources do they have available to prevent such from happening.

I could certainly see someone who is intent on surviving cutting off the tip of their finger and leaving it with a Diviner to determine if they live or die in a big encounter and then to use a Wish or other spell to bring their body back and/or raise them.
When you're making an Adventure, remember to ask, "WWMPD" (What Would My Player's Do?) Then tailor your adventure around that.

Well, I was recently the only one to survive a vampire. Two of us got out, but I had a more clever escape plan (something like: we don't run towards the guards betting they don't know why the alarm was raised yet). So I escaped over the fence with 8 horsemen after me, full plate clad horsemen who where elite soldiers.

Yeah, I dirtied my pants that day.

Got away though, through clever play and some bad fortune on the guards' part. It was a real longshot.

What's the situation with you?

I'm still playing my first character created after I got back into D&D. His name is Vlyndar, he's a half-elf fighter and almost to level 3. He came very close to dying in our last fight as he got all the way to -9 before getting healed. I've had character deaths and they didn't really ever phase me, but when Vlyndar almost died I got kind of depressed when I thought I was going to lose him. There's something special about him.

In a nutshell: my character once met a succubus who figured out what my character is (Dragonblooded) and promised to come and collect my character someday to do nastybad things to her. My character did not like that one little bit. My character was able to track down a magical item to bind the succubus and put the succubus under her control. My character even got to use it, but the succubus found a loophole in my character's directions and was able to get it off. :banghead:

So, rather than wait to be attacked in some future moment, my character has decided that there's not much left to do but go and try to bind the succubus again. She's even managed to come up with much better directions, courtesy of a small bargain with an erinyes (the enemy of my enemy is not my friend but might be willing to part with a little helpfulness in exchange for services rendered).

In the next game or so she should be able to track the succubus down and try again...

Now that does not sound at all bad to me. I mean, have you seen them pictures of succubi? Ask if she got a sister...

The succubus does not want my character for things that she will like to have done to her. This particular succubus is more demon than simple sex maniac.
