So, I was recently told that my department is having a "budget crisis" and that we're supposed to use the copiers as little as possible. This does not make teaching English any easier. I mean, we live through paper. You should see the handouts I've gotten in recent years. I use them for scratch paper when the quarter is over.

But I've been thinking that all of my students have internet access, at least through our school but most often through their homes. This means that I can expect them to be able to perform simple things via the internet, at least.

A very wonderful colleague of mine gave me a student questionnaire to hand out on the first day of class and it was really informative for me. Since I'm not sure that we'll have the budget to hand out such things next quarter, I've made an online form for the purpose. I'll have everyone write down their email addresses the first day and then I'll email them the URL. I'll give them a week to fill it out. Although most of the questions are voluntary, there are some things that I end up needing.

I think I'll be experimenting with how many things I can put up online and ask them to work with/print out. It makes it easier on me in some ways, since I won't have to try to get to school early or stay late to make copies.

Some things, like the syllabus, have to be handed out. Most other things are fair game.

when I was in school, we got everything including sylabi through the internet. Our school used a program called blackboard. All of our assignments were posted there, sylabus, calendar, grades, etc... It even had a little message board system for each class so that students could discuss issues in between classes.

Of course, I was in the IT program so we all had a good handle on the internet as some other students might not have. But you could tell your students that should any not have net access or need to get things other ways you can work with them individually.

We do have a system for getting class materials through the internet but I'm not sure that I have access to it as a TA. I suppose I really should find out asap.

We had a thing like that for our highschool web page. Only instead of cool system and nice scanned images of what the teachers wanted we got to type it all and format it in HTML. Loads of fun

It worked very well however. The teachers could send kids to the libarary where they could print materials for five cents a page if they managed to loose the first handout. Some of the teachers who wernt old and too stupid to use a computer much less upload a file using an FTP client would keep homework and assignments on their teacher page. Before I joined the on the job training classes (thats three periods of easy A a day AND I earned more than minimum wage) and made it to where I couldn't stay after school I was working on a simple program so that more of the teachers could do that. I also got to photograph cheerleaders. Cyber tigers rocked :ayyy:

I do all my classes online! I can work on them at work, at home, or anywhere I can find a connection.

I did take 2 English classes online, got A+'s in them...which when you think about English being my native tongue, I should...but the professor had us print out our own stuff, when needed, otherwise everything was in Word and sent as files.

Good luck with it!
