I guess I should warn others before I begin...
:soapbox:

Just recently, I visited Jack Chick's website. I don't know why. Maybe just for a good laugh. For those lucky few of you who don't know who Jack Chick is, he runs a Christian publishing company that constantly speaks out about roleplaying games being a font from which demons possess young men and women to commit murder and suicide and join the occult. No, I will not provide a link, because I've decided to go on a quest to kill the site by asphyxiation (God, I hope I spelled that right). No, I don't plan on choking Jack Chick to death (though if the offer does come up, I'd be more than willing); I mean I'm going to try and stop people from going there so that the site eventually grows old and fade away.

So anyways, after a brief period of exploration, I found that Jack Chick and his little buddies are a bunch of racist motherfuckers (Thank you, Captain Obvious!). Believe it or not, the idiots are not JUST attacking DnD. Jack Chick's website has several articles that attack Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and (get this) Roman Catholics. I could see the reason as to why he speaks out against Islam, but fighting with people of your SAME FUCKING RELIGION?! I'm still in high school, and even I think that's fucking stupid. But Jack doesn't stop there. He also has several comics speaking out against Masons, homosexuals, Buddhists (cuz nothing says Satan like inner peace and serenity), and, of course, Wiccans.

So, its pretty apparent that Jack Chick and his fellows are fighting a war on mulitple fronts. Now, I don't know about you guys, but when I think about several famous leaders who fought a war on multiple fronts, I think Hitler. And if I remember my base history correctly, Hitler had two defining traits: A) he was a very racist motherfucker, and B ) he got his ass kicked in the end (Go Communism!). Jack, coincidentally enough, seems to share only the first trait (though, the second has probably occured as well).

After this bit of reflection, I can't help but sit back and laugh, knowing that he is simple throwing himself into a large pit of very-pissed off and hungry snakes. Though it still burns me greatly that his kind has permanently scarred the image of all southern christians (which includes me, sadly) as bible-thumping, ignorant, cousin-fuckers. If him or one of his kind attempt to pull some of their :bs: on me and tell me that I'm going to hell for my personal hobbies, I'll tell him/her that I'd rather burn in hell with people I like than stay in heaven pretentious assholes like them.

Jack Chick's comics have always been funny and yet creepy at the same time. Dunno if I'm the only one who feels that way. I stopped being mad at him and his folks a while back, and frankly, if people are suckered in by his propaganda then it says more about them than anyone else.

Jack Chick ...runs a Christian publishing company that constantly speaks out about roleplaying games being a font from which demons possess young men and women to commit murder and suicide and join the occult.
Believe it or not, the idiots are not JUST attacking DnD.  Jack Chick's website has several articles that attack Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and (get this) Roman Catholics.

Is this the guy with that scary/hilarious cartoon on his website in which the little Norman Rockwell girls start learning satanic stuff? Funny how it's a female DM suckering in a female player and then later on another female player kills herself. Not to highjack your thread to further my 'feminist agenda,' but something about that makes me think of the word "womenfolk". I bet it's the same something that makes me want to smash his toys (or at least give him an unladylike gesture :flip: ).

As for the Catholic thing, a lot of fundamentalists don't like Catholics for the same reason they don't like Anglicans (like me): idol worship. I have a mostly nice but somewhat scary uncle who beleives that i'm bound for an eternity of firey poking because Catholics and Anglicans will pray to/through saints or the Virgin Mary or use rosary beads for a little memory help. When I told his wife that the preist at my church was a woman, I thought she was going to faint. or swoop down and "rescue" my little sister and me.

sigh. Otherwise, these are both very nice people and they are genuinly concerned for my/our well being. But this Chick dude and those like him are only exploiting people's faith for personal gain. I feel sorry for him- look at all the nice things that he's missing, the great people that he'll never know, because he chose to fill his life with hate.

doesn't stop me from calling him a jerkweed.

EDIT: how do you break up someone else's post that you're quoting. i would have preferred to break up the quote above instead of the elipses, but i didn't know how... :( ignorance != bliss

Good point. I guess I really should have thought about that. Then again, nothing is more dangerous than a group of angry, gun-toting Republicans.

To Redisbest:

1) I'm cool with you hijacking my thread for your 'feminist agenda.' Besides, it looks like Jack's starting to run out of targets, so women's rights and feminists might be next. I bet you'll have a field day with him when you find out about it. :D But yeah, its the very same guy.

2) (Though I hate to get preachy) I believe that those that chose Christ as their Savior are Christians, no matter what, and hence, are saved, no matter what. Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, they're all the same with me. I've been a member of several branches of Christianity (baptised as an Episcopalian, member of both a Methodist and a Baptist church, and I currently attend a mostly Lutheran-based church), and I've found little to no difference in any of them. I've got Catholic, Protestant, Ignostic, and even Wiccan friends, and all of them are cool. The Catholic ones don't worship idols. They worship God, like the Protestants. So how are Catholics any different from Protestants? Makes no damn sense to me.

3) If you look at the top of your reply box, you'll find a little button that says "QUOTE". If you press it, you'll see [QU OTE] appear (though, without the space between the u and o). You'll also notice a little * appear on the quote button. Just type in (or copy and paste) the quote you want after [QU OTE] and hit the quote button again. The end result should look something like this.

I think anyone with a really deep-rooted faith that they're unwilling to question or challenge is just asking for trouble. Like by grandfather says, "Don't confuse me with facts, I've made up my mind." Thus I have a rather dim view of religions based on blind faith in general.

Hating for profit is probably the most abysmial motivation in life I can imagine. Such a shame these people never actually get the message Jesus actually taught; he was hanging out with all the sinners, the poor, the filthy, the damned, while the self-righteous are the ones who condemned him. He taught that everyone is loved by God, and these modern-day fundamentalists are so hypocritical they've made it difficult for the real message to get through.

Sigh.

thanks, that does help.

Hey, I'm not saying I support the pointy-doom theory, here. I happen to beleive something that a lot of folks find strange: there is only one God. However, humans are finite creature, so we come to understand the Infinite through different means. I'm a Christian, but I think that someone honestly worshiping Budda or Allah or the Hindu gods or the Greek pantheon or Banjo (god of puppets) is worshiping the same God as me.

Apologies to those who find religion/personal beleifs uncomfortable and impolite discussion.

Yay for thread highjacking! Radical leftist feminist attack!

Jack Chick has been around for a long time and he isn't going anywhere. He's an idiot with a completely uninformed world view and one unwilling to break his uninformed stance on anything. I really don't think he's exploiting people's faith for personal gain. He truly believes that what he believes is the truth and so do those who use his tracts.

His tracts are pitiful and ignorant but I don't really believe he's hitler. He just reads his bible upside down I believe. I read his stuff for comic relief now. His stuff isn't dangerous. Those who believe his horribly written comics already believed that and were just looking for reinforcement. Anyone who can read a comic where satan kills a bunch of kids in the woods wearing a pumpkin on his head and then slaughters the local police and believe there's any truth to his comic whatsoever are already lost.

Let's not lump all of us gun toting republicans in with the loony Jack Chick crowd.

If I may be an English major here for a moment, it is very interesting that he chose to add so many women to his comic about D&D (Dark Dungeons, that is). The comic was made back in 1984 and as I've heard it there weren't that many women gaming at all back then. Of course there were some, but not many. At the table in his comic, though, there are more women than men, and it is the female dungeon master who offers forbidden knowledge to the equally female player. The reference to witches is completed when the acolyte is taken to the "Temple of Diana."

Next time your on mister Chick's site I suggest you look up the blatherings... er, writings of one William Schnoebelen. In his life he claims to have been a Satanist, Witch, Warlock, Mason, Wiccan, Dungeons and Dragons player and member of too many other religious or psudoreligious factions to list. He claims to have been "high ranking" in all of them. Acording to his accounts, the "leaders" of D&D came to him trying to make sure that he was using his role as Dungeon Master to teach spells properly. I have a feeling that a combination of nut cases who had mental problems coupled with liers like this freak job and propogandasts like Chick led to the things some of us can remember from our youths (Ok, so it was actualy a little before my time but I remember) involving Gamers vs. The Churches.

And how come so many Jacks are out to piss people off? Jack Chick says I'm going to hell for D&D, Jack Thompson thinks I'm going to shoot people (AND go to hell) for playing Grand Theft Auto... I just think we need to out law naming your kids jack ;)

ah the ignorance of youth.
Tom hank's first movie not Big, but Mazes and Monsters was based on true events. D&D has had a bad reputation since its beginning. Messed up disfuntional retarded kids playing real life make believe in the sewers tends to do that. These are of course the same people that get upset and obsessed with pokemon, and any other video game, movie, board game, and outlet that gives them an excuse to be retards. Strike that, retards are far more happier.

No joke, in this community that I live in there is a woman who goes around calling her self Belle, after the Beauty and the Beast movie. she signs her credit card Belle, and wears her name tag the same. She also drives a yellow bug that is decked out like pickachu. Thank god, she doesn't play D&D :) But i guess every hobby has its weirdos.

because women are evil and satans spawn. They cast spells over men to make us do vile and unimaginable things like shop for tampons, and watch movies like the notebook, and beaches. They have the power of the boobies. Must resist the boobies, must resist the boobies. Ahhh failed my will save to the boobies.

Yea but Belle dosn't look half bad dressed up like Team Rocket's Jessie and anything that puts chicks in costume is ok in my book :ayyy:

I always though Mazes and Monsters was based off a book. TOO THE WIKIPEDIA! :type: Ah here we go (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazes_and_Monsters) The movie is based off a book that was based off reports of a case that may or may not have been perhaps because of having one time played Dungeons and Dragons. It was a fictionalization, not a documentary.

Mazes and Monsters was based off of a book that claimed to be based on a true story but was in fact based on outrageous claims from a mother who couldn't accept the fact that her son committed suicide because of problems he had so she blamed it on D&D. The fact was, her son was a homosexual who had major issues being accepted by his peers due to that which probably led to his suicide far more than D&D did. In fact, I'd go as far to say that D&D is the only thing that kept him around as long as it did since he had a group of friends there who didn't care about his sexual tendencies.
