Recently, I've been getting the distant urge to make my own sound file packs for Baldur's Gate and BGII. The trouble is, right now I don't appear to have a program that will edit or create wav files. I'd really love it if I could record sound from my DVDs for this purpose, but I'm not sure how best to go about it.

Do you folks have any suggestions?

Goldwave (goldwave.com) is a very nice program for such things. All sorts of editing features and ways to import sound. It has simple to use features that make the amature sound bite editor happy but its complex enough to be used in comercial applications. It has a lengthy free trial period then its like 50 bucks if you want to buy it.

Aye, Goldwave is ALL I use for my ambient sound mixing and such. Very good program. The demo lasts a LONG time too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, which I may be, but with any free trail period of a program couldn't you simply re-install the program when the free trial period ends to "extend" it?

Granted, I'd prefer the other methods, which include changing the code itself, but most folks (including the designers) don't take kindly to that, nor are most folks proficient enough to do so reliably. But nowadays, that's the easiest thing to do, or at least it is with several of the free trial programs that I use. Although I know how to edit the code, it's almost always invariably easier/faster to remove the program, and then re-download another free trial.

Do either you DR or Kesht know if this is the case with Goldwave?

I'm not entirely sure. I believe they use e-mail address verification so if you have a handy source of BS e-mail accounts you should be able to do it again. If they have switched to something on your computer saying when the cut-off day is (probably a registry entry) then yea, there is a veritable cornucopia of cleaning programs out there that can make sure that the install executable will never know that it has already been used once.

That being said, I have had this on my old computer for over a year and the trail has not run out. It is use based, not a time limited thing. All I use it for is to play songs backwards.

I've been using Goldwave on two of my machines. On one machine, it's been on for over two years and I STILL have not hit the limit. I'm quite a ways away too.

I don't remember an e-mail confirm for setting up the install, as I HAVE installed the demo on two machines without any problems. Kept the install file too, just in case they change to a different method in the future. :D

Okay, this program is awesome. The minute, the very MINUTE I get home, it's wav time. I'm already going to be late to school for this. :D

Odds are very good that all you'd have to do is delete a registry entry and them reinstall. However, an easier way to deal with the issue is simply to change the date on your computer. If you change it from 02/28/06 to 02/28/05, you'll get a full year before the program tells itself that the trial period is over.
In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge-

except that if you leave it like that it sometimes breaks your virus scan and other programs that run based off of date.

The trial period, as far as I can tell, is not based on a date but on how many commands you give the program. After __ commands, it asks for $.
