The single greatest cartoon from the 80's had to be either tundercats or GI Joe. I especially always liked the end of GI Joe where they had the "Now You Know" segments.

I think I might have to work that in a campaign at some point.

"No Timmy, why would you eat a candy bar before you go out to play basketball."

"Because I'm so tired and need the energy."

"Well Timmy, don't you know that you'll crash in an hour from that, here try an apple, it's much better for you."

"Wow, I didn't know this."

"Well now you know, and KNOWING is HALF the battle."
"Love makes the world go round. And has been known to provide a +2 circumstance to certain skill checks."

Brief Forever Knight rant… Great show, but was the last episode of anything more depressing? I mean, really, a lot of people complained over the last year or two of Buffy & Angel, and I can see what they mean, but, pfffft. I survived the last episode of Forever Knight. Nothing TV can throw at me will faze me ever again.

Dunno, haven't gotten to the last episode yet. I could believe it, though.

Strangely enough, Buffy and Angel make me want to play Vampire. Not sure why. You’d think it would make you want to play Hunter, but there you go.

You know, nothing makes me want to kill whiny mortals and vampires like watching Buffy and Angel - so it makes perfect sense to me that you'd want to play a vampire afterwards. ;)

Firefly makes me want to play a sci-fi game, and I don’t even know any good sci-fi games (Apart from Fading Suns, but that’s a completely different feel.)

Different feel, but the Stargate game is good.

The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. I mean, I’m not the only one who loved that show, right? Who finds themselves drawn into it, if ever it is on while they are channel surfing? Who feels strangely compelled to begin gaming just by watching the intro alone?

You know, I passed right over that cartoon as a kid so there's no magic in it for me now.

G.I. Joe. Before they made them have to draw in the Cobra guys leaping from exploding tanks, and shot-down airplanes. I remember when they made that switch, and I was like, WTF?

Same with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Donatello and Michelangeo ruled because they had blunt weapons. Poor Leo couldn't do squat unless he was facing mechanized monsters. As a kid, watching this show I was always saying, "Why doesn't Leo just slice the bastard?" I didn't quite understand that whole violence rating system thingy.

Sorry to dissapoint you. One of my old players burned me every episode on a DVD as I had never seen them. After the first 5, I stopped and wanted to rip my eyes out. I guess it's one of those things you have to see when you're young.

… Sorry, could you repeat that? All I heard was, “David… I have no soul.” :D

Seriously, all joking aside, I’m not especially surprised that not everyone holds it in the same regard I do. Even for me, it’s somewhat of a guilty pleasure. But I have to say that while it is fantastically cheesy, to me at least, it’s an enjoyable cheesiness, and as Fixxer said, I think there are some good gaming ideas in there. But, what do I know? I mean, I liked He-Man as a child, and seeing that now induces silent, open mouthed horror that I was ever that stupid, so, there you go.

Oh, and while I think of it, the greatest cartoons of the 80’s were Dangermouse and Count Duckula. No more of this GI Joe heresy, please. ;)

Whoops. My apologies, I should have thought that you might not have seen the last episode before running my mouth off. Good show, still. It really seems to have fallen through the cracks though. Too many people haven’t even heard of it, let alone seen it. Again, sorry for my semi-spoiler there.

Actually, I saw a couple of episodes of Stargate over the winter holiday, and I have to say that after I got over my initial “Hey, it’s McGuyver!” shock, I really, really enjoyed it. More than I expected too, actually. It’s put me in a little conundrum, as to whether I should get the Stargate SG1 game, or the Serenity one, (thanks for the heads up on that, Aladdar.) I guess I’ll just have to get the band together, and see which setting they would like to play in more.

I'm really not surprised when folks report that the ending of a show is bad. I've seen enough shows end to know how awful it can get. I mean, I was a Xena fan and I simply refuse to acknowledge the official last episode as anything but a piece of garbage. That was a disappointment that still rankles. Forever Knight I expect will go down perhaps even worse than Angel; I'll see when I get to it.

I guess I should have warned you that I don't like the characters of Buffy or Angel very much. I never watched their shows for them. I started watching Angel when Gina Torres was on (after Firefly was cancelled and Joss couldn't bear to let the cast go); I stayed around for Cordie a bit, and then fell in love with Darla. I started watching Buffy when I saw Anya because I've always been a fan of that actress; I stayed for Willow, Zander, Anya, and Bad Willow. And Spike, even though they effectively cut off his balls with a damned V-chip.

That's a hard choice! Honestly, either one will be a lot of fun, and I love them both myself. I need to get my copy of Serenity now that Xmas is over...

Just out of curiosity, what happened in the final episode of Xena?

Noooo! I’d actually managed to delete the memory of the last episode of Xena from my mind. Now it’s back. :o Damn, the finale of Forever Knight *and* Xena playing in my head. If Godfather 3 or the last series of Red Dwarf sneaks in there somehow, my fragile psyche could snap completely.

I agree completely. In fact, I have a name for this kind of show. To me, Buffy and Angel were doughnut shows. You know, with the annoying/terrible main character being the hole, and the enjoyable supporting cast being the, well, doughnut… *cough* Look, it makes sense to me, okay.

Anyway, I agree. Post series 5 Buffy in particular was so irritating that it became something of an endurance trial just to wait for her to leave the screen. Angel was perpetually annoying apart from the occasional moments in his own show when he wasn’t, you know, whining, or making Morissey seem masculine and Radiohead upbeat. Angelus, however, is a man I will always make time for. Spike as a bad guy was fantastic, and *even* post v-chip, at first, when he was still a bad guy just a basically powerless one, he was still tolerable. It was the unrequited love for Buffy that spayed that character beyond all hope of redemption in my humble opinion. Darla ruled in a variety of different ways, as did Drusilla. (And James Masters and Juliet Landau get huge bonus points for being about the only two American actors to successfully pull of a English accent, even if her one came a bit close at times. Big, big, points for that.) Early series Giles and Xander were okay and I can’t even talk about Willow rationally… or without drooling. Let's just say I'm a big fan.

Well, the current straw pole with my gaming group has the Browncoat faction out ahead. But we’ll see. I think I’ll end up getting both eventually, so it may just become a matter of which I get *first* :D

Oh, and Aladdar: I’d try to explain, but I can’t for fear that in doing so, I’ll be forced to vomit all over my computer. You understand. I can, however, provide a link to a transcript for the last episode. Will that do? I should warn you, you’d probably have to know Xena pretty well to understand why it was quite so projectile sickness inducing.

(Warning. Do not use the link below unless your bullshit tolerance factor is extremely high, or you have access to the spell: “Resistance to Shite.” Well, you’ve been warned:)

Well I guess I shall throw in my two cents full of nonsense. Thudercats and Gi Joe were awesome cartoons. I'm a child of the 80's, being older then them, I was able to understand more of what was going on. I enjoyed the Dungeons and Dragons movie, in fact I own...the VHS first episode, but it is the first episode. Cheesy? you bet ya, I mean really what 80's cart...strike that..What cartoon isn't cheesy? Powerpuff girls is so damn cheesy, I'd take my rubiks cube cartoon, and mask cartoons over thios crap anyday.

The movies that have inspired me.
Name of the Rose(Dave licked the book and died)
First Knight(I based a character on this Lancelot and Mad Mardigan from willow)
Willow
Pitch Black, and Chronicles of Riddick
Brothers Grimm
Pirates of Dark Water
I plan to use the King Arthur movie soon
DragonSlayer(now thats an old 80's movie)
Krull.
Neverending story
Now not a movie, but books from the Bible, make great adventures.

Pirates of Dark Water

Chungo moungo that show sucked. It was another that as a kid I loved but now it just gets on my nerves. As a mater of fact, I think ALL shows that over use catch phrases get on my nearves now.

I thought it was from the 90s though. I'm pretty sure I watched new eppisodes of that right around the same time I watched ReBoot (one of THE BEST FREAKIN SHOWS EVER). I do belive that that Pirate of Dark Water was the show that put me on the pirates side of pirates vs. ninjas. It was also interesting that the "good guys" were not the best people around. Nicer than the villans, but still pirates.

Yes, very good villians and heroes. I loved that show. I remember they even managed to "successfully" pull off the Seven Eight Nine joke without it seeming too cheesy.

I'm also recalling the cartoon Jason and Wheeled Warriors for some reason. I loved that cartoon as a kid.

I think the biggest thing was that each show had pieces/parts that I've taken ideas from and expanded upon. I tend to throw them all into the blender of my mind and press the button to see what comes out (because of course I don't have the lid on).

When you're making an Adventure, remember to ask, "WWMPD" (What Would My Player's Do?) Then tailor your adventure around that.

My recent creation, a Call of Cthulhu campaign based in the boarding school I attend, had two major video game influences. Kudos to Silent Hill for the idea of including the creepy fog and kudos to FEAR for the idea of a creepy, blood-soaked little girl ghost being the main villain.

Ya know, westerns get me in the gaming mood too. I have wanted to do a wild west adventure using D20 modern (with the D20 past supliment) for a long time now. Deadwood, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Tombstone... good stuff.
