I wouldn’t say that the guy you bumped into was a stereotypical geek, at least not the British version thereof. That “my life is so dreadful” thing tends to be more associated with the emo/goth crowd, at least over here, unless I’m reading something incorrectly. (Although, I have to admit, the kind of lack of social grace required to open a conversation by talking about an allergy to sunlight, seems to fit the type.) Now, every group has its annoying stereotypes, whether it’s the uber-nerdy D&D rules lawyer, or the “I’m so Goth, I shit bats” White-Wolf fan, but the vast majority of the players I’ve met haven’t fit them. Admittedly, most of the players I know are either friends I introduced to role-playing, or who I met at the table as it were, not at a con or anything like that, so I don’t know how much you can read into that with regard to “The Typical Gamer.” Personally, I do have to agree that it’s usually disappointing meeting fellow gamer’s randomly. Ideally, contact and recognition should be almost instantaneous, perhaps followed by some kind of silent salute, a fist raised to the sky or suchlike. Then, the conversation that follows should be as though you were old friends, a true meeting of the minds, possibly even with some finishing of each others sentences. In practice, however, I tend to strike up the conversation, get a few: “What, you play D&D? You?” type questions, followed by a few probing rule mechanics questions to test my credentials, as, you know, wearing a suit apparently makes it very improbable that you’ll know what a saving throw is. Then befuddled silence till one of us walks away. *sigh* David. |

In going through life, I continually find It's a terrible business to make up one's mind So in spite of all comments, reproach and predictions I firmly adhere to unsettled convictions. | |

I guess I fill about half the sterotype. Well, half the sterotype I presented. As far as Kesht's discription:I'm not a big fan of football. It's ok on ocassion and I may even be persuaded to see a game if friends are going but its not my thing. The occassional beer is ok, but I'm not much of a drinker. I have a decent porn collection, but I don't go and have sex with everyone who will have me. Guess I'm kind of like your sterotypical woman in the idea that there should be more to a relationship than mutual lust before you get buisy. I will admit to liking a large portion of the country music out there. Alternative is such a diverse catagory that I don't like to say I'm into alternitive because it means so many diffrent things to many diffrent people. Mostly I'm into classic rock, Led Zepplin, Skynard, Aerosmith, Steppenwolf... the list goes on.
Tofu is freakin nasty, pure and simple. As to politics, I can see why any side of an arguement has its good points and its bad points. Seeing as how the lobbiest with the most money makes the political desision any way, I don't vote. I have had my share of political discussion in public areas, and more than once random passers by have said they like my ideas and that I should run. I even once got three percent of one districts vote for Marion County Tax collector  . ditto. I'll go in and spellcheck this later. |

Have actually found more psychos in bookstores than anything else. Of course one guy, (the older brother of a girl I knew) was in his early 40s living in his folks basement, (at the time he had never left hom), with low paying night job, and practically lusting after his own kid sister
whenever he came out into the light. BBBRRRRRR! Creepy just think about him. Met him when I was a senior in high school. Think he finally got laid and moved out when he was pushing 50.I don't quite fit the stereotype. Athletic, beer guzzling, former head banging, aged head banging, have been laid but luckily not arrested last Mardi Gras, black guy (depending on who you ask) who likes raw sushi. |
