Okay, so there's a thread on the WotC boards about reasons why folks hate their DM.

One guy posted that he hated his DM for forcing his character to have gay sex all the time because he's used to it and won't mind.

And the terrible part is, it is so late, and I am so tired after having been writing all day, that all I can do is giggle helplessly every time I think about it.

But seriously, there are a billion reasons to hate any DM. It's easy to hate the folks with any authority. (God, it's my goal to be a professor - what the fuck am I thinking?) It's easy to blame people who actually have to act.

More people might bother to DM if they heard what was good about DMs - what was appreciated.

Yes, a job well done makes DMing worthwhile sometimes. But honestly, no DM is a fuckng martyr. Some praise doesn't hurt.

Concider yourself praised!

I thought you wanted to be a teacher, not a professor (or is that the same thing in the US?). Anyway, it's good that you think about the subject of control and power in an early stage, because you will come in daily contact with these mathers in that line of work.

*Sigh* The life of a DM. You spend hours preparing for the adventure. You do the shopping. You host the game. Players come in, forget to pay their share, make a mess and leave without as much as a thank you...

No wonder some of us force gay sex on PC's to get even. I'm not saying it's ok, but I understand :D
said the fool, and he showed his suntanned teeth.

I wasn't looking for my own praise (but thanks), I was thinking about the short shrift I see other DMs getting.

Well, here's the thing. Round my circles, if you say you want to be a teacher, you generally mean that you want to teach high school or below, maybe junior college. If you say you want to be a professor, that means you want to teach at a four year university, for which you will have to acquire the mythical doctorate degree.

It seems that I've been acutely aware of power thus far. In childhood I was painfully aware of how little I had, but I used what devices I felt I could. Now I realize just how much power I'm going to be getting, potentially, and I want to use it well.

I don't know if this holds true for English (which is what I've gathered you're studying, although I'm not fully sure) but to be a professor in Astronomy, Physics, or Geology (I have an MS in Astrophysics), you also have to do research. The sad thing, of course, is that retention at four year universities is based far more on how much money you can bring in with grants than with the quality of your teaching.

THAT is why I wanted to teach community college, not that anyone's hired me yet. I don't mind research, but I got the degree to teach. Now I'm looking at getting my HS certificate and maybe an MS in geology on the way. At least I'll make more to start with.

You're right, hylentor - a professor at a 4 year must do research in addition to any teaching they are actually paid to perform.

Part of me really likes research. I love, love, love learning new things. The research paper I just finished Thursday will be with me for a while, and I'll probably try to incorporate some things into my DMing from it. But to have to teach - and then research - all week long, every week? I'm not sure how I feel about that right now.

But I'm on vacation, so it can wait. :)
