I was thinking this evening that in the real world, we have folks who breed animals for profit. I was wondering about incorporating that into D&D (or other games) as a way for players to make money in their off time. I mean, in my main D&D campaign, all of the players own their own homes. One of them has a wife who remains behind, another has an aunt and uncle. If they wanted to, with the way that they travel they could track down some interesting animals that folks would want as pets. The tressym certainly comes to mind. Part of the process is finding the right animals, and another part is breeding them with other high-quality animals of the same kind. Then, in most games those with the Handle Animal skill could conceivably train the animals in certain ways. I'm wondering what sorts of creatures would be good to use, and how much money they might bring in. Sometimes it's good for players to have side projects. |

Worgs, Griffons, Fiendish dire Wyverns for those munchkins (fail your Handle Animal check and... err), riding dinosaurs, possibilities are near endless. We once had dire Ostrichs which was cool, but they ran off. |

Just about anything that can be ridden, used for guard duty, or simply kept as a pet and has animal intelligence would have value. However, low intelligence is the key in thinking about animal (or whatever) breeding. When talking about training and breeding wolves, griffons, or wyverns your talking about a good business. When talking about dragons, elves, or lammasu your talking about slavery (although that can be good business too). Most of the creature types would be animal, beast, magical creatures and some aberrations. In evil magic societies skeleton and zombie mounts may be available for sale, but obviously can’t breed. Most outsiders are either too intelligent and/or too alien to be able to kept and breed. |

The term for this profession is called Animal Husbandry. One of the more useful ideas I have on the subject is to "breed" gelatinous cubes. Using your professional know-how to pick the best traits from ezach individual creature, you could eventually breed smaller cubes (say 2.5x2.5) that are non-agressive. Now, what pretentious rich person wouldn't want a gelatinous cube garbage disposal in his home as a conversation piece? |
| In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge- | |
