I'm wondering a few things: Do you attend gaming conventions, and why? Do you attend often? What sorts of things do conventions offer you? |

I have attended 1 gaming convention. It wasn't by choice. It was a birthday gift from my then girlfriend. She had asked me if I wanted to go to it but I guess she didn't take me seriously because she got us tickets. See, I don't object to conventions. It is just that living in Alaska, conventions...well they suck ass. The one we went to was a Star Trek convention held in a local hotel. My then girlfriend had been told there would be lots to do, Magic the gathering would be played (I was a big addict to that in another life), and she honestly thought it was going to be fun. She was a big geek too and so bought all the hype. Turned out to be ultra-lame. All the cool stuff (if you could call it that) happened the night before the convention (magic games, LAN parties, etc.). The actual convention was four rooms with speakers about various things and five tables/boothes outside the four rooms. I would love to go to a Dragoncon, or a Gencon and see a true gaming event as it should be. I'm sure I'd have a hell of alot more fun. |

Though I haven't been able to go for the past two years, I love going to DragonCon. It's a wonderful experience and even if you don't have any money to blow in the dealer's room, just sitting in the lobby of the hotels can be a rewarding experience, as you get to do a lot of interesting people watching as well as meeting new friends. Three years ago, I got locked out of my room around 3am. Rather than beat on the door and wake everyone up, I went to sit in the lobby for a while. I ended up playing a game of RISK 2210 AD with four people I'd never met in my life. We had a ball. On the subject, Didge, how likely would it be that you would be able to get to Atlanta on Labor Day weekend of next year? All unforseen events aside, do you think that might be possible? |

Anything is possible my good friend. But as far as I can tell, so long as I have a good idea (several months in advance) I can start looking for cheap ass airfare to fly down and setting aside my penny collection to afford it. And I can also set aside the time from work, so long as I give plenty of heads-up to the powers that be. Though I warn you that if I come down that way, it will not be just for Labor day. I'd probably be down for a few extra days to justify flying out of state. Edit: Just as a side note, depending on where in Atlanta this might take place, I might very well be able to get very, very reasonable (if not near free) hotel fare. My uncle happens to be a bigwig with a hotel chain down in that neck of the woods. I'd have to check of course, but anything is possible if I know the area and how many folks. If nothing else I can use his last name and we might end up with a nice basket of fruit. heh

The con takes place in both the Hyatt Regioncy and the Mariott Marquis hotels. They're both at the intersection of Peachtree and Peachtree (every street in Atlanta is named Peachtree...I'm not kidding). |

Oh good, so I haven't just been hallucinating. It seemed that way to me, even from all the way out here. Every time I get addresses for that area it's "Peach Tree" this and "Peach Tree" that. Surely there are other trees in Georgia? |

IIRC (which I'm not saying I do, but just a wild hairballed number I'm pulling from my brain atm), there are something like 34 Peachtree's in Georgia. My other uncle (one not in the hotel business) happens to live in Atlanta and on one of them, though I doubt he'd let me crash there which is why I brought up my other uncle. When I was younger and visted him, I managed to snag a coffee cup that said, "Meet me on Peachtree" And then listed all of the Peachtree roads. You know, like Peachtree ave., Peachtree street, Peachtree blvd., etc. I'll have to see if my one uncle (that's in the hotel business) can do anything given I now know the area (as well as the name of a couple hotels). I'm hoping that this uncle comes up to visit next summer (he expressed an interest to my mom that he wanted to help me build a garage) which will be nice since I haven't seen him in about 5-6 years, although I do talk to him via email, phone, etc. every few months or so. |

Ok, I know this is a really old thread, but I wanted to respond. Every year that I can afford to go, I go to a little con called Polycon in San Luis Obispo. It's tiny compared to any other gaming event (barely over 200 people). I go because I use to live in San Luis County, and I know half of the people there. There are several people that I've known since high school, that I only see once a year at Polycon. Hell, in between games I can look around, see someone I haven't seen in a year, sit down, and catch up. And since the games start at 8:00 AM, and usually run until 4:00, it's 72 hours of fun filled gaming, with maybe 12 hours of sleep between 3 days. That, and getting to play all the new games. There are so many games that I never would have gotten to try if it wasn't for Polycon. Games that never make it to the gaming stores. Some are homebrew, some are so badly designed that they can't function (In Nomine springs to mind), and some are awesome but just don't make it for whatever reason. That, and ego stroking I get whenever I win any prizes. I’d love to try going to a bigger con, and gods know I really want to go back to Comiccon, but Polycon is a must for me. |

I would love to go to Dragoncon, just once at least. I'm considering asking my wife if she would object to me going (and I think I already know the answer, damn hot non geek woman who doesn't understand my DnD fixation). |

I have wanted to go to attend a gaming convention for some time now. Problem being my friends are either constanlty broke, working as to not be broke or arn't gamers. Turns out I'm the only gamer in the area who has the money and desire to go to Gencon or DragonCon (Or perhaps even the PennyArcade Expo) so I never have set off on the great American Road trip to a gaming convention. And of course, Aladdar, the best way to get your wife to let you go is to let her come to! See, your taking her to <NAME OF CON CITY> to a fancy Bed and Breakfast (woman folk love them things) and, if after breakfast, you just happen to say you have tickets to the con... well, you took her to a Bed and Breakfast. She's not alowed to be mad! |

lol, you don't know my wife. She's allowed to be mad if she wants to be mad, even if it makes no sense. I don't think Fixxxers assertion the other night that "You can get laid so easily at con" would really help matters much. |

 No I don't think that will help her estimation of cons, not one bit. |

Umm, I don't think it matters to Fix if you're male, female, inbetween, both, breathing, or of the same species. |

What? Of course it does! You definately have to be breathing (albeit, shallowly). |
