Someone wrote me today to tell me that a new book called Drow Magic just came out. He said that it talks about some of the things I talk about on my web site. The e-mail was only one sentence long and didn't say anything more. I wasn't sure what to make of it. I get the idea that he wanted to let me know about the book. I also got the idea that the guy felt my material wasn't necessary anymore, since now something like it is printed in a book. He and everyone else is entitled to their opinions. My web site for D&D has now been up for around three years. I've written for it when inspired in one way or another. Sometimes the ideas I get are similar to ones printed in books, somewhere; there are so many books out now that it is impossible to keep this from happening. Other times I write a few things and publishers pick up similar ideas later. This is normal. I don't rearrange my site because I happen to have ideas similar to those found in books for two reasons. The first reason is that my stuff is supposed to be similar to the printed stuff because I use the d20, D&D system. I use the same system to get things done that lots of folks do. Secondly, similarity is unavoidable but sometimes it's what's different that is important. Someone might still find stuff on my site valuable even if it was presented differently elsewhere. But at least the stuff that's on my site was created by a gamer, for gaming, and is presented for free. Even if someone thinks it's crap, at least it's free. I offer my stuff for use in other people's games (though not for copy on other folk's web sites) and the most I ask is for a little reponse. I wish I could ask for $20, believe me; I'm a college student and Governor Schwarzennegger has me over a barrel. But there's something good and proper about gamers trying to help each other's games out. |

Given the number of sites on the net that carry no original content whatsoever I find it odd that soemone would take the time out of their day to send you even a one line email to tell you that your site may no longer be needed. I can't even recall how many times I have gone searching through D&D or Vampire sites and found myself reading word for word copying from the official books. I saw a quote somewhere once that went something like: "There are no original ideas left in the world, what IS original is the unending variations on those ideas." I have always liked it, despite never once being able to remember the author of it. To say that your ideas are no longer needed because someone has a similar text in printed form is just plain foolish on that persons part. If anything I would be telling people "Yeah..I've seen that, on-line at a website I frequent, and you paid how much for it?" |

That was me and all I meant to say was there was a book out with ideas about drow, as I read your ideas about them. No offense. |
