Well, we can see where I stand as well.
In my mind, it is that simple. But then, I'm simple minded. -Didge-

Define background? As in experiences in gaming, or actualy personal history? I can see reason to want to know either, but honestly I think I would be a little anoyed to quite upset if I went to a session with a new group and was interrigated on either.

As the question was stated, their background in gaming. How long they've gamed, what they've played. Without "interrogation," you can find out these things.

It helps to know in some cases, but I woudn't say I find it very important...Might be that I'm so used to teaching people who have bearly heard of D&D how to play...Would be nice to find people interested in roleplaying before I talk them into it though...

I absolutely care and want to know the gamers background.
Wether Good and/or Bad. I want to know this BEFORE the first game they play with me, because I believe it leads to understanding. You know what I expect, I know what you expect... I even set up coffeee nights for new gamers so we get to do the meet, greet, socialize thing and there aren't any awkward moments at the table the 1st night... cause by the first game you know a little bit about everybody.

I tryed it, it works... you might not game with everybody you meet, but a cup of coffee is a small price to pay for all the good that comes out of it...

I absolutely want to know a gamer’s history. Whether I’m a DM or a PC (Although I care a lot more if I’m a DM) I want to know the other players’ gaming histories. By knowing the players’ histories I feel I have a better idea of what sort of players they are likely to be. Are they new and fresh, or tired and jaded. Also, I want to know what systems they’ve been playing in. Those that have been playing D&D for years tend to think and play different then those that have playing White Wolf for years. I also want to know how many groups you’ve been playing in, and what those other players and DM were like. If you’ve been in the same group for the last ten years, then I might expect resistance when there are some game or house rules different from what you are use to. On the other hand, if you haven’t been able to stay in any one gaming group for longer then a month, that's definitely a red flag. Gotta go, just shattered a wine glass.

I don't really care. I mean I want to know if they've played an rpg before or not, after that depending on the feel of the person in general, i.e. an obnoxious ass in real life will be the same person in the game. Otherwise the games have rules which for the most part have to be followed. I guess I'm more concerned if they're really interested in playing rather than they gaming history.

It is very important to me to know how experienced a player is if they're going to be in my game. Knowing their background helps me to determine what I need to explain to them vs. what I can expect them to know. It also helps me to know what I can expect from them (character background, min/maxer tendencies, etc.). In a game I can deal with virtually every type of player that I've come across as long as I know what to expect.
