„I don’t know where to begin or what to write about myself. There is so little and yet so much. I may be eighteen years of age but the amount of experience I have belies my age. From what I’ve understood and seen, I can confidently say that nobody is perfect in the world.“

1992

It was already after midnight and the date changed from the 4th to 5th of April 1993, but there were still several hours left before the sun would come up over the sleeping city. Then it happened. It was just a matter of seconds. A girl flew through the air and landed on a pathwalk, five stories down from a window ledge she had been sitting on earlier. Unconscious, but still breathing, she was rushed into a hospital, but the doctor, after a little while, could not do anything but to state the horrible truth. The girl was no more. Two days later, dressed like a bride and surrounded by flowers, she was burnt according to Hindu religious rites, while her parents, brother and husband were left behind to mourn. And so were thousands, millions of others. Because the girl, who had only about a month before celebrated her 19th birthday, had in a short time become a popular film star, with hordes of fans and critics predicting her bright future in the movie industry. It was not to be.

Divya Om Prakash Bharti was born in February 1974 in Mumbai and ventured into films in a tender age of 14. She was a pretty girl, and after being discovered by a filmmaker Nandu Tolani, she was promised the main female lead in „Radha Ka Sangam“ opposite Govinda. They groomed her for two years, only to replace her by Juhi Chawla, from reasons never explained. The girl was rejected by several more filmmakers, until she fainlly got lucky and was offered „Bobbili Raja“. Thus she made her big screen debut in Telugu and was quickly becoming popular down in the South. Suddenly the producers in Mumbai remembered the pretty girl with huge, saucer-like eyes and decided to pull her over - back to Hindi cinema. Her first Hindi film, Vishwatma, released in 1992, and before the year was over, ten more movies made their way into theaters, some of which were very successful. Not only that, but Divya was also well-liked by critics, who almost always appreciated her performances, even if they panned her films. Her rise to stardom was rapid and seemingly unstoppable (not even by marriage to Sajid Nadyadwala rumours - eventually proven true ).

Just as rapidly she was labeled a spoilt brat by those who were working with her. She was called unprofessional (she had a habit of turning up late for the shoots) and rude (when she didn´t like something, she voiced it out pretty loud). But in a manner that became one of her main features she royally did not care, and was quick enough to send a few venomous words in the direction from where an attack came. And in the end, she was admitting quite freely she had all those faults. Stubborn and selfish like a child. And why „like“? She was a child after all. Her innocence did not prevail in her actions, but her character remained unstained by unhealthy hunger for fame, attention or wealth. She felt misunderstood, but adopted an „I don´t care“ attitude, which rubbed many people the wrong way. People who met her either loved her, or hated her. There was almost no middle ground with Divya. While Govinda hit it off with her on the best note possible, Aamir Khan was annoyed with her so much he refused to perform on stage with her. Audience, in their turn, loved her almost unanimously.

But then the fateful night came. What and how exactly it happened, has been a matter of police investigations and countless speculations. And till this day hardly anything is certain, except that Divya fell into the Death´s embrace. Was it an accident, suicide or murder? Nothing really points to suicide and to accuse anyone of murder without any proof is unacceptable. Perhaps it was, indeed, just a series of unfortunate events, that snatched her life. Perhaps she indeed just drunk a bit too much and was carelessly swinging her legs in the air, sitting on a ledge under one of the windows. Ultimately the reason does not stand as too important.

On one hand, Divya Bharti is slowly passing into an oblivion. With years rushing ahead, thousands of actresses coming and going, new sweethearts found on ever corner, and new films being made every day, there are still many more people who look into the future, but hardly care for the past. Divya, with her 14 films from early 90s, is more and more often a name without a background. „I´ve heard of her, but never saw her films,“ is a line I have heard more than once from born Indians – born after 1990. And foreign Bollywood watchers can rarely give me a positive answer, if I ask them, if they are familiar with the unfortunate Miss Bharti (often because they are not interested in Bollywood before 2000 – at best they spare a moment to sit through Deewana for Shahrukh Khan).

At the same time, for others, Divya is becoming a fairytale. People have always been fascinated by tragic stories of beautiful, young and rich people. Divya was all these things, plus talented, with potential never fully realized in the short time that was set aside for her. Mystery of her death has in addition wrapped her in a veil of secrets unspoken, that may or may not be real, but always make everything seem so romantic. She became a story, much like Madhubala, who too left too early, a story that found its place in the immense Bollywood folklore. After all, every culture, even the filmy one, craves heart wretching tales.

The girl with small, rounded face and huge brown eyes, is looking at us from the old photographs, smiling at us from the screen, making us wonder if indeed everything is just a matter of chance and accident in life, or if there is indeed a thing called destiny at work.

No one from Bollywood ever seems to talk about her anymore or even seems to remember her. That's really what makes me sad. :(

The last person I heard talking about her was Madhuri in an interview about six months ago. She was asked whose work on screen she likes, and among "standart" choices and some diplomatic stuff she actually said she really liked Divya and she misses her. It was a surprise for me since they didn´t even know each other. Before that I recall Shahrukh talking about her on Kofee with Karan. But that is all.

SRK only talks about her in relation to his career, not about her as Divya Bharti. :P Oh! Where's this M.D. interview??

A friend was translating it for me so I hope she did not make that up

Q: Who are your favourite heroines?
A: Among yesterday heroines I´m very fond of Nargis, Meena Kumari and Madhubala. All three of them have a unique place in my heart and mind. Today Vidya, Rani, Kareena etc. are very good actresses. Among my contemporaries Juhi and Sridevi performed very well. One more actress - Divya Bharti. I miss her a lot.

She didnt really say she misses her a lot. She just meant- I remember one actress a lot- Divya Bharati.

But still, it was sweet to know- atleast someone acknowledged her.

Thank you Abhie! Just the fact she actually remembers her after so many years and without having any connection to her or her films whatsoever, to actually take her name almost 20 years after her death, definitely counts.

Like I wrote in the Shout Box, this was an engaging and very well-written article about an actress whose entire life will forever remain an enigma. A beautiful amalgamation of naivete and guts!

Was I fond of her as an actress? No. But her twinkling eyes and girl-next-door looks captivated the entire nation instantly, and this feat has to be applauded.

With twinkling eyes that bespoke of untold secrets
And a childlike smile that zipped straight to your heart
This child-woman could have departed early
But never will she remain apart
