Celebrating Dilip Kumar What better time than now to write an article on the legend that is Dilip Kumar. He turned 90 a few days ago. Although he refuses himself to celebrate his birthday this year as he is still mourning the loss of several great friends of his from the industry including Yash Chopra , his fans gathered on his birthday in his hometown of Peshawar to celebrate his birthday and it has been announced that his ancestral home there is to be preserved as a national heritage. He has a biography due out soon, albeit delayed, to celebrate his 90 yr-journey, and that I can't wait to read. Born Yusuf Khan but still affectionately called Dilip Sahab by all in the industry, Dilip Kumar has left more than just a mark on the Indian film industry. Although he is popularly known as the Tragedy King, we all know he is so much more than that. He had, even at the time, versatility that none of his contemporaries could boast of. He played the role of Mughal prince in Mughal e Azam with as much ease as the role of a poor villager-turned-dacoit in Ganga Jamuna, a suave young hero in Andaz, emotionally labile young man in Aadmi and a tonga driver in Naya Daur. He did comedy in Kohinoor, Aan, Leader as well as the role of a serious political activist in the latter. Ram Aur Shyam, where he plays a double role, illustrates to the T his versatility. I would not be wrong in saying that Dilip Kumar is not just one of the finest actors the industry has seen, but also one of the first superstars of Bollywood. Stampedes would follow his steps, his pictures adorned the walls of so many households and the release of his films caused hysteria like never seen before. He was also probably one of the first “method actors” of the Indian film industry, learning sitar for the film Kohinoor and spending time with tonga drivers before shooting Naya Daur. And he has been aptly rewarded for his efforts. Let's take a moment to applaud his awards and achievements here. He still ranks as the actor with the most filmfare awards for best actor to his name - with 19 nominations and 8 awards, the first in 1954 for Daag and the last for Shakti in 1983, showcasing a career spanning over 3 decades. He is also the only actor to have won 3 Best actor awards at Filmfare for 3 yrs in a row - for Azaad, Devdas and Naya Daur from 1956-58. His other awards have been for Kohinoor, Leader and Ram Aur Shyam. He has not only been awarded the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke award but also the Nishan-e-Imtiaz in Pakistan. One can’t talk about Dilip Kumar without mentioning the greatness that is Mughal-e-Azam. The film held the record for highest grossing film for fifteen years. Riots took place outside cinema halls for tickets, which were the most expensive cinema tickets for its time. In 1976, when Doordarshan showed Mughal-e-Azam for the first time, Lahore, where reception for DD television could be obtained, saw fully booked hotels and flights and empty TV shops as people scrambled for the chance to catch it on TV. No 100-crore club means anything in front of the hysteria that this film caused. Do we have any regrets when we think of his career? He famously turned down Pyaasa because he had been advised to do less depressing roles as the roles that had gotten him acclaim as the Tragedy King were taking a toll on his psyche. But while Pyaasa turned out to be a classic, so did many of the lighter films he did instead, like Kohinoor, Aan and Leader. So no regrets there. He turned down an offer to act in Lawrence of Arabia. In a recent interview with Times of India on his 90th birthday, he claims to have judged the script of the film on the same basis he judges any Bollywood script, and that he did not feel he needed to go to Hollywood to prove himself. And rightly so. He has more than proven himself in Bollywood itself. If I were to lament something when it comes to Dilip Kumar's career, it is that the man should've done more films and been more active in the later years of his career. Shakti, Mashaal, Karma & Saudagar all proved that he still had it in him. Heck, they still earned him awards and nominations. Just wish there had been more... Here’s to some epic scenes and songs of Dilip Sahab over his illustrious career - my top 15. I've tried hard to include scenes more than just songs. Which of his films / scenes / songs do you remember as being a highlight of his career? Do share ur thoughts with us... 15: AAN Chirpy scene in Aan 14: AZAAD Comedy, intense scenes – Everything u need for in one film/ 13: DAAG Watch Dilip Kumar acting drunk, sad, yet laughing at life: Ae mere dil kahin aur chal from Daag. 12: KOHINOOR Comedy scene in Kohinoor. 11: KARMA Telephone scene in Karma. 10: NAYA DAUR Dapper young man in romantic song: Ude jab jab zulfein teri from Naya Daur. 9: MASHAAL Iconic roadside scene in Mashaal 8: ANDAZ Crazy act at the end of Andaz (Do not watch if u’ve not seen Andaz and don’t want the ending spoilt) 7: LEADER One film: Leader. In this one at his flirty best This time: Comedy Acting drunk (more comedy): Leader again. I could post all the songs of Leader. Let me stop here. 6: GUNGA JUMNA More funny light scenes from Gunga Jumna – Watch the film to see the difference in his character in the second half of the film and the ease with which he portrays both. 5: DIL DIYA DARD LIYA Excellent intense scene in Dil Diya Dard Liya 4: AADMI Some scenes from Aadmi where he portrays a man who is psychologically scarred. His portrayal of his mental struggle through the film could not be more perfect. 3: RAM AUR SHYAM Poor quality video, but Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam is pure genius!! 2: DEVDAS Unfortunately again acting drunk but a great scene: Kisko khabar thi from Devdas. And Kaun kambakht scene from Devdas 1: MUGHAL E AZAM Famous scenes from Mughal e Azam. Edited by Falky, Dec 12 2012, 06:23 PM.

Dilip Kumar will always bee synonymous with Madhubala in my mind, so for me whenever I think of him, I think Mughal-E-Azam. |

Dilip Kumar is just something else. Maybe Amitabh became ultimately more famous and maybe one day some other actor will break his Filmfare awards record, but Dilip Kumar will always be the giant of Bollywood. |
