The Top 50 Songs of 2012 Sallu, 12th December 2012 (12.12.12 )![]() Disclaimer - The views expressed in this article do not in any way represent the FF population. It is meant for entertainment purposes and to hopefully serve as a basis for general, harmless and healthy discussion. Is there a better way to kickstart this new section other than musically? 2012 has been a great year for the Hindi film industry. Many hits. Many dark-horses. Many good albums. While a section of the audience may feel that Bollywood has lost its musical essence, an overwhelming percentage has embraced the new wave of music directors whole-heartedly. Honestly? It was a real challenge for me to cut it down to 50. The list below includes my personal favourite songs of the year. Songs which have an enormous repeat value for me. My list is based on the ''desi'' tracks I've discovered this year (so don't be surprised to see a few random non-filmy songs) and otherwise, only includes films released/to be released in 2012. ... 50. Khudaya - Shanghai Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar Lyricist: Neelesh Mishra Singers: Shekhar Ravjiani & Raja Hasan ![]() You always expect a powerful soundtrack from an Emraan Hashmi film. Shanghai, however, wasn't the quintessential film, with the songs taking a backseat and mostly incorporated to take the proceedings forward. Yet, Vishal & Shekhar manage to leave a reasonable impact with Khudaaya. This one is a soft, haunting ballad about one in search for his love. It's short duration and Shekhar's brilliant singing will leave you wanting for more! ... 49. Mukhtasar - Teri Meri Kahaani Music Director: Sajid - Wajid Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi Singer: Wajid ![]() A love story, set in 3 different eras. While the film didn't quite click at the box office, the album surely made some noise, with Mukhtasar leading the pack. Meant to represent the current generation, this song beautifully mixes style and soul, while boasting of very good musical arrangements. Wajid's ''earthy'' voice gives the song the extra push making it memorable. ... 48. Tumhi Ho Bandhu - Cocktail Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Irshad Kamil Singers: Neeraj Shridhar & Kavita Seth ![]() 2012 was a fantastic year for Pritam, who delivered three of the best albums in the form of Cocktail, Agent Vinod & Barfi!. The former, especially, was a musical sensation, with 7 superhit songs. Greeted with unanimous critical and commercial acclaim, Cocktail's music went on to top the charts for weeks after its release. While it was my personal favourite album of the year back when it got released, overplaying the songs wasn't really a good idea since I wore out the songs. Tumhi Ho Bandhu, however, stood the test of time. It's still fresh and peppy. Kavita Seth's lines elevate the song to higher levels. A definite must-have in this list! ... 47. Radha - Student Of The Year Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar Lyricist: Anvita Dutt Guptan Singers: Shreya Ghosal, Udit Narayan, Vishal Dadlani & Shekhar Ravjiani ![]() You know that you can expect the best when it comes to Karan Johar. The guy has an ear for music, and his latest offering is no exception. A high-school musical, which puts Hollywood's Highschool Musical to shame, in all departments (story, acting, direction & music). This musical bonanza gives direct competition to Pritam's Cocktail when it comes to youthfulness. Radha oozes charm and proudly adds itself to KJo's elite list of ''superhit traditional numbers''. The vibrant picturisation and Udit Narayan's surprise entry make this one irresistible. ... 46. Tore Bina - Kahaani Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar Lyricist: Anvita Dutt Singer: Sukhwinder Singh ![]() Only 5 songs into this massive list, and already 3 songs composed by Vishal & Shekhar, from different films. That's mighty impressive. Kahaani was the dark horse of 2012, in every possible aspect. Despite being an offbeat thriller, which wouldn't normally rely on music, Vishal & Shekhar come up with an absolutely delightful soundtrack. The songs more than suit the mood of Kolkata. Tore Bina, wonderfully sung by Sukhwinder Singh leaves a lasting impression. ... 45. Saans - Jab Tak Hai Jaan Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Gulzar Singers: Mohit Chauhan & Shreya Ghosal ![]() Possibly the most awaited soundtrack of the year. And while I'm at it, Saans was probably also the most awaited song of 2012. Reason being it's the result of the so many No 1 teaming up - ARR, Gulzar, Mohit & Shreya. Expectations were bound to be sky high, and although Saans doesn't quite match up to them, it still manages to haunt you. While Mohit is at his restrained best, Shreya moves out of her comfort zone and hits some brilliant notes. If only the ''epic feel'' was incorporated more subtly, this would have enjoyed a better position on this list. ... 44. Akhiyan - Mirza, The Untold Story Music Director: Jatinder Shah Lyricist: Veet Baljit et. al Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ![]() Nope I'm not into Punjabi cinema. But I'm a die-hard Rahat Fateh Ali Khan fan. I came across this song in April, and since then, there was no looking back. Rahat is his usual amazing self. The lyrics add to the charm of this song. With a slight qawwali feel, Aakhiyan will make you hit the repeat button instantaneously. ... 43. Pareshan - Ishaqzaade Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Kausar Munir Singer: Shalmali Kholgade ![]() With as many as 5 soundtracks, the new star on the musical horizon, Amit Trivedi, was the busiest music director this year. With YRF's earthy take on Romeo-Juliet, Amit Trivedi surprises us with some truly hatke songs. Pareshan is the perfect mix of the lovey dovey genre and soft rock. What adds to the freshness of this track is newcomer Shalmali, who stuns you with her unique voice and brilliant voice projection. ... 42. Tu Mohabbat Hai - Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya Music Director: Sachin-Jigar Lyricist: Mayur Puri & Priya Panchal Singers: Atif Aslam, Monali Thakur & Priya Panchal ![]() The newly wedded most-loved couple of Bollywood couldn't have asked for a better song to kickstart the year! Tu Mohabbat Hai works on the first listen itself. Atif Aslam does what he's best for and he is well supported by Monali & Priya. The song is reminiscent of 2009's ''Tera Hone Laga Hoon'', and just like the latter, Tu Mohhabat Hai will surely be fondly remembered in the years to come. ... 41. O Saiyyan - Agneepath Music Director: Ajay - Atul Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattachrya Singer: Roop Kumar Rathod ![]() With the Chikni Chameli [fun song] wave, other songs of Agneepath were ruthlessly overlooked. While Sonu Nigam's Abhi Mujh Mein Kehin was surely a heart-warming song, the situational nature and lack of repeat value dampered its prospects of being in the list. It's the poignant, sad, melancholic love song - O Saiyyan - who manages to make its presence felt amongst other biggies. Roop Kumar Rathod gets his best song post 2008's Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, and nails it with a soulful rendition. ... 40. Jugni - Cocktail Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Arif Lohar* (thanks Sophie!) Singers: Arif Lohar & Harshdeep Kaur ![]() One of the stand outs of Cocktail was the Punjabi-flavoured Jugni, which comes as a breath of fresh air, after the repetitive happy-go-lucky bhangra music offered to us over the past 5-6 years. A rock'ish song essentially, Jugni will make you sit back and take it seriously with the hard-hitting lyrics, penned down by the ever-dependable Irshad Kamil, who swept all the awards last year with Rockstar. Oh dum gutkoon, dum gutkoon, dum gutkoon, dum gootkun, gutkun.. Kar saayi naal sabak wafa da padhe saayi pir mereya, jugni ji.. Harshdeep Kaur, Arif Lohar and Pritam give one of their career-best songs with Jugni. A must listen!! ... 39. Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff - Teri Meri Kahaani Music Director: Sajid - Wajid Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi Singers: Sonu Nigam & Sunidhi Chauhan ![]() Retro time guys! After a long time we get a song which does justice to the 60s. Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff might have had lazy choreography, but Shahid's infectious energy, coupled with the dhamakedaar Sonu/Sunidhi duo make this one a totally grooving song. Probably Sonu's best song in 2012. ... 38. Yaariyan (Reprise) - Cocktail Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Irshad Kamil Singers: Arijit Singh & Sunidhi Chauhan ![]() 2012 has given us Arijit Singh. Period. No, he's not a newcomer, but he's given us so many gems in 2012. And Yaariyan is just the beginning. While this version of the song doesn't feature in the film, it's more memorable than the one sung by Shilpa Rao & Mohan Kanan. Supported by an effervescent Sunidhi Chauhan (yet again!), the duo make a lasting impact with this sad ballad. ... 37. Aashiyan - Barfi! Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire et. al Singers: Shreya Ghosal & Nikhil Paul George ![]() Need something to cheer you up? Pritam obliges. Aashiyan is the perfect happy-go-lucky-go-fuzzy song. It instantaneously brings a smile to your face. Shreya Ghosal uses her melodiously sweet voice to her full advantage, while Nikhil brings in the rawness with his unique appeal. If only this wasn't a copied song it'd have been better ranked! ... 36. Voh Dekhney Mein - London Paris New York Music Director: Ali Zafar Lyricist: Ali Zafar Singer: Ali Zafar ![]() It's risky to have one man handling all the different major aspects of a song. Ali Zafar takes the risk, delivers and how!! While this unconventional soundtrack didn't find too many takers, I was won over pretty quickly. Voh Dekhney Mein, especially, works like a refreshing lemonade. It's fun, peppy, easy to sing along and has quirky lyrics - which are easy to relate to. Add to that Ali Zafar's being his natural self, and you get a winner. ... 35. Sunlo Zara - Ekk Dewana Tha Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Javed Akhtar Singers: Rashid Ali, Shreya Ghosal & Timmy ![]() Ekk Dewana Tha came, tanked and was quickly erased from everyone's mind. A big pity indeed considering that A.R.Rahman remade what is known as his ''best south album'' yet, in Hindi with this film. While the soundtrack enjoyed fantastic critical acclaim, the lack of buzz couldn't really give this underrated gem more visibility. Sunlo Zara was one of the few songs in the album which could be termed as a better finish product than it's original. And the credit entirely goes to Shreya Ghosal. Once again, it's a fantastic feel-good song. ... 34. Uska Hi Banana - 1920 Evil Returns Music Director: Chirantan Bhatt Lyricist: Junaid Wasi Singer: Arijit Singh ![]() This one caters for all those who relish moody and haunting songs. It lingers in your mind and manages to edge out the hot favourite Apna Mujhe Lagaa as the best song in this sequel to 1920. With lyrics dealing about pain, loss, suffering and wanting to be united - Arijit Singh once again bowls you over with a soulful rendition. ... 33. Badla Nazara - English Vinglish Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire Singers: Amit Trivedi & Shilpa Rao ![]() The most perfect comeback any actress could wish for! Right from the storyline to the acting to the direction to the music, English Vinglish scored a near-tenner in all departments - hence making it the best film of 2012 for me. Badla Nazara - most probably known as the ''theme'' song of the film - wonderfully encompasses the entire vibe and feel of what's in store for you. The Amit/Shilpa pair works like magic in this one. This is totally a song to like vike! ... 32. Saiyaan - Heroine Music Director: Salim - Suleman Lyricist: Niranjan Iyengar Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ![]() More was expected from Heroine. Both from Madhur & Salim-Suleman. Yet, the duo have managed to keep their heads high with Rahat's mesmerising Saiyaan. It's easy on the airs and makes for a good listen at night. ... 31. Pungi - Agent Vinod Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya Singers: Mika Singh, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Nakash & Pritam ![]() Who would have thought Agent Vinod could have been this bindaas? Pungi - although only (and sadly?) a promotional song - was, and is a rage. Pritam blends in an array of singers and instruments to give Pungi the best massy feel as possible and he succeeds in creating one of the zaniest songs of 2012! ... 30. Jiya Re - Jab Tak Hai Jaan Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Gulzar Singer: Neeti Mohan ![]() Jiya Re was very much reminiscent of the old A.R.Rahman. It's fun, vibrant and a major mood booster. The bubbly-ness exuded through the lyrics and beats make this an apt song to be picturised on the sunshine girl - Anushka. The visuals on the big screen only add to it's magic, making it one of the best tracks of the year, with good repeat value. As such, Jiya Re proudly breaks into my Top 30. ... 29. Gustaakh Dil - English Vinglish Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire Singer: Shilpa Rao ![]() Gutaakh Dil is one unique song. It deals with the complexity of one's heart. The stunning lyrics add to the depth of this song - and Shilpa Rao excels in her delivery. The melancholic vibe exuded by this Amit Trivedi composition leaves you thinking. ... 28. The Disco Song - Student Of The Year Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar Lyricist: Anvita Dutt Guptan Singers: Nazia Hassan, Sunidhi Chauhan & Benny Dayal ![]() Remaking a Nazia Hassan song is probably one the bravest things attempted by a music composer this year. Everyone who knew about this was against it. After all, who wants to see a classic song being butchered by loud beats and hinglish lyrics? But Vishal & Shekhar pretty much left everyone gasping for more, with this intelligently composed song. It's peppy, catchy and literally gets you grooving. Not only does it transport you to the disco era, but the ''modern'' touch given increase its shell life. While the Sunidhi & Benny are competent, it is Nazia who steals the show with her ''disco dewane'' line. No wonder Kjo decided to use this one in the climax of his film! ... 27. Yeh Jism Hai To Kya - Jism 2 Music Director: Arko Pravo Mukherjee et. al Lyricist: Arko et. al Singer: Ali Azmat ![]() What a waste of a gorgeous soundtrack. Jism 2 offered so much to music lovers, but yet, the album will not get its due at the awards functions owing to the pathetic film. Ali Azmat gets his well-deserved big break with this gem of a song. Beautifully composed, beautifully written and beautifully sung. Judge it for yourself ... ... 26. Dhadang Dhang - Rowdy Rathore Music Director: Sajid - Wajid Lyricist: Sameer Singers: Wajid & Shreya Ghosal ![]() I'm not a die-hard fan of those masala films. And I'd consider myself as a sucker for sad/slow/intense/romantic songs, but how can I possibly not fall for this mela-of-a-song?!? Thing of all the OTT songs you could have in a song, and they are there in Dhadang Dhang. Yet the final product more than entertains. It's loud and it works!!!! Those who enjoyed Dil Dance Mare from Tashan will surely agree that Dhadang Dhang is on the same lines and works like magic as well. The crazy picturisation elevates the madness of this song. And the 90s feel added to it will only make the sentimental one go gaga over it. ... 25. Tu Hi Bata - Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon Music Director: Raju Singh Lyricist: Raju Singh Singer: Jeetu Kathak ![]() Sue me but this is my all-time favourite Indian show. The magic of IPKKND cannot be described - you really need to experience it. What made the experience even more memorable for me was the music by Raju Singh. Tu Hi Bata is one of those songs you'd expect from Kailash Kher, in a biggie starring Ranbir Kapoor. And I can bet all my FF posts that it'd have been a resounding success. One of the best qawalis of the year, as far as I'm concerned. ... 24. Hosanna - Ekk Dewana Tha Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Javed Akhtar Singer: Leon D'Souza & Suzane D'Mello ![]() Undoubtedly the best track of this album. While not really as good as it's original version, A.R.Rahman succeeds in making Hosana linger in your mind for days. Suzaane's haunting voice is the high point, while you do wish that Leon's rendition was more powerful. Nevertheless, one of Rahman's best tracks in the last few years. ... 23. Dagabaaz Re - Dabangg 2 Music Director: Sajid - Wajid Lyricist: Sameer et. al Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shreya Ghosal & Shadad Faridi ![]() This soundtrack not only recreates the magic of its predecessor, but also manages to bring back the old-charm flavour. A massive treat! Dagabaaz Re follows the same path as Tere Mast Mast, except it's much more subtle. It's sweet, simple and charming like anything. The lyrics perfect fit with Chulbul and Rajo's love story, full of nakhres. ... 22. Jee Le Zara - Talaash Music Director: Ram Sampath Lyricist: Javed Akhtar Singer: Vishal Dadlani ![]() Mostly a situational number, but Jee Le Zara manages to stand on its own. This soft-rock number has Vishal once again impressing us with his wonderful take. If anything, the man has proved that he can handle mellow songs with aplomb! The lyrics penned down by none other than Javed Akhtar, dealing with an estranged couple, deeply touch your heart. ... 21. Abhi Abhi (Duet) - Jism 2 Music Director: Arko et. al Lyricist: Arki et. al Singers: K.K & Akriti Kakkar ![]() That Jism 2 would deliver musically was expected. Thus, it came as no surprise then the album opener - Abhi Abhi - was such a resounding success universally. With an infectious melody and the underrated K.K making winning everyone over (for the nth time) with his enchanting vocals, Abhi Abhi bowls you over.The majestic nature of the song when it peaks at the high notes and Akriti's entry make sure that the duet version makes a stunning impact. ... 20. Yeh Jo Halki Halki Khumariya - Son Of Sardaar Music Director: Himesh Reshamiya Lyricist: Irshad Kamil Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ![]() What do you get when you mix Sufi + Rock music? An experiment not many would approve - but damn, Yeh Jo Halki Halki Khumariya won me over, and how! It's maha-catchy. To be honest, this is a song you'd expect from Pritam, but it's nice to see Himesh Reshamiya experimenting. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan manages to move out of his comfort zone, and still delivers. ... 19. Mar Jaiyan (Romantic) - Vicky Donor Music Director: Donn, Bann, Abhishek & Akshay Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire Singers: Vishal Dadlani & Sunidhi Chauhan ![]() This pleasant surprise from Vicky Donor ended up being one of the better songs of the year. Mar Jaiyan is a modern'ish sufi song, with outstanding dholak beats. With a haunting melody and unparalleled singing by Vishal & Sunidhi (damn this duo is GOOD), Mar Jaiyan is fantastic. ... 18. Laakh Duniya Kahe - Talaash Music Director: Ram Sampath Lyricist: Javed Akhtar Singer: Ram Sampath ![]() It's hard - almost impossible - not to fall for Laakh Duniya Kahe. Javed Akhtar gives us an impeccable take on love - which can be interpreted differently, depending on listeners and their state of mind. Ram Sampath underplays his part beautifully giving us a sensitively sung song. The length of the song ensures that you're totally hooked to this little gem! ... 17. Fevicol Se - Dabangg 2 Music Director: Sajid - Wajid Lyricist: Sameer Singers: Mamta Sharma, Wajid, Keerthi, Uvie & Shadab ![]() Let me start with a controversial statement: Fevicol Se > Munni Badnaam Hui, in every possible department (tune, beats, singing, lyrics, video, picturisation). Without a doubt Fevicol Se is THE item song of 2012 for me. It has offers everything you could wish for from a masala song. The beats will get you dancing like crazy while the lyrics will leave you in splits. Through Fevicol Se, Mamta Sharma proves why she's the best in business today, when it comes to these funky item numbers. Add to that a gorgeous Kareena and a charismatic Chulbul having unlimited fun, and you get the best dance number of 2012. If only I could seriously woo a girl with a missed call though.... ... 16. Keh Ke Lunga - Gangs Of Wasseypur Music Director: Sneha Khanwalkar Lyricist: Piyush Mishra Singers: Amit Trivedi & Sneha Khanwalkar ![]() Possibly the most underrated song of 2012. While I wasn't a big fan of the soundtrack (consisting of as many as 13 tracks), Keh Ke Lunga is that one track which stayed with me to such an extent that it's in my Top 20. The lyrics by Piyush are swamped by hidden meanings and gritty humour. It's a dark, edgy and brilliantly frightening song that gives the word ''hatke'' a different meaning altogether. Sneha Khanwalkar OWNS this song, while Amit Trivedi provides ample support. ... 15. Rabba Ve (Kyun Dard Hai Itna- Duet) Music Director: Raju Singh Lyricist: Raju Singh Singers: (Clueless) ![]() A song filled with pain, questions and the search for answers. Rabba Ve - Kyun Dard Hai Itna, might be from a Television show, but one could definitely see it in a major Bollywood film, impressing everyone. It's a marvellous track, with a haunting tune. Listen to it once, and I can guarantee that you'll fall in love with this one. ... 14. Heer - Jab Tak Hai Jaan Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Gulzar Singer: Harshdeep Kaur ![]() Expect the unexpected from A.R.Rahman with Heer. Who would have thought this South Indian maestro would have nailed such a Punjabi folk song like Heer? With Gulzar giving in his best work in recent years, the lyrics are enigmatic, almost poetic, with a lot of layers. Harshdeep Kaur gets her song of the year, and can definitely expect nominations and awards in the new few months. ... 13. Ishq Wala Love - Student Of The Year Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar Lyricist: Anvita Dutt Guptan Singers: Shekhar Ravjiani, Salim Merchant & Neeti Mohan ![]() Much has been said about the ''Ishq Wala Love'' phrase - loads of jokes have been passed like the infamous ''Gana Wala Song''. Although funny while it lasted, it's unfortunate that people didn't look deeper into what this song had to offer. The lyrics have a lot of depth, and were refreshingly original. In today's time, where most of the quintessential love songs have the same repetitive cheesy lyrics, Ishq Wala Love comes as a breath of fresh air. The little nuances brought forward by Vishal, Shekhar and their singing team are brilliant. This calm, quiet and intoxicating number is pure gold! ... 12. Piya O Re Piya - Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya Music Director: Sachin-Jigar Lyricist: Mayur Puri & Priya Panchal Singers: Atif Aslam & Shreya Ghosal ![]() Piya O Re Piya is one of those songs which you wish never ends. Atif Aslam is in his element, and is wonderfully supported by Shreya Ghosal - who together give us one of the purest romantic songs of 2012. That it indirectly celebrates Ritesh-Genelia is the cherry on the cake. Shreya's ''Mein Vari Jawan'' give the song that haunting touch. Brilliant stuff! ... 11. Aahatein - Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya Singers: Karthik & Shilpa Rao ![]() Knocking at the Top 10 door is Amit Trivedi's Aahatein. A soft, soothing song which plays with your heart. The chosen singers do full justice to this track, nailing every possible note. It's a big achievement considering both are expected to almost whisper throughout the song, hitting dangerously low notes. The rhymes and poetic lyrics infuse the magic touch to this song. While the beginning is very much an unplugged version, Shilpa brings in with her a refreshing change, which will be loaded by all. Dharma productions also released a full unplugged version of this song - which is must for all you music lovers. Aahatein Unplugged - ... 10. Mann Jage - Bittoo Boss Music Director: Gajendra Verma Lyricist: Aseem Ahmed Abbas Singer: Shaahid Mallaya ![]() On number 10, I have the outstandingly hauntingly stunningly mesmerising Mann Jaage, by Gajendra Verma. Shaahid Mallaya is entrusted this huge responsibility and the man gives no one the chance to complain. He pours his heart out in this divine number, which will definitely bring a lump to your throat. It cannot get more soulful than this. The lyrics pull you in, making this one a quality track, worthy of featuring in many of the best songs of 2012 lists! ... 9. Kar Chalna Shuru Tu (Film Version)- Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya Singers: Vishal Dadlani & Shilpa Rao ![]() There isn't much difference between this version and the one in the album - except a long pause at the start which make you await the rest of the song eagerly. Amit Trivedi excels once again in creating a different, yet charismatic song. He makes use of fading instruments like the saxophone and the trumpet, giving Kar Chalna Shuru Tu this edgy, jazzy and contemporary feel. Everything is in perfect synch, making you want to relish this song again, and again. Shilpa Rao is as usual very effective, but it is Vishal Dadlani who amazes you with that perfect control over his towering voice. ... 8. Kyon - Barfi! Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Irshad Kamil Singers: Papon & Sunidhi Chauhan ![]() Kyon will go down as the cutest song of 2012. While primarily a love song between the protagonists, Kyon achieves more than. The instruments, rhythm, melody and musical arrangements make you go back in time. It has this old-charm-world magic which uplifts your mood, making you sway with a smile stuck on your face. The touching lyrics and Pritam's genious addition of the acoustic guitar make Kyon a delightful song which will be treasured in the years to come. ... 7. Ishaqzaade - Ishaqzaade Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Kausar Munir Singers: Javed Ali & Shreya Ghosal ![]() Kausar Munir pitches in her best work of 2012 with Ishaqzaade's title song. This one is a soft love ballad, put together by various instruments, giving it the much required ''long lasting'' feel making you instantly get the ''epic'' vibe. Javed Ali gets more footage, and sings his part with elan. However, it is none other than Shreya Ghosal, who despite coming in very late in the song, blows you away with her intense voice and those low notes she touches. This woman has a knack to steal the thunder with minimal lines, no kidding. Highly recommended! ... 6. Tera Deedar Hua (From The Heart) - Jannat 2 Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Sanjay Masoomm Singer: Javed Ali ![]() Despite being the current favourite, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's of Tera Deedar Hua pales in comparison to Javed Ali's (yet again!) amazing take. From to the heart - to the heart. Tera Deedar Hua is a lively romantic number. The desi rhythms infuse a lot of energy into this song, and the stunning lyrics add so much impact. The mukhda part is so memorable - Yoon tera muskurana, aur aake chale jaana, Kismat ka hai khul jaana, Tera Deedar Hua, pehla sa pyar hua, Pehli hi baar hua iss dil ko, Na to inkaar hua, Na hi iqraar hua, Jaane kya yaar hua iss dil ko. At number 6, it finds itself nearly breaking in into the top 5! ... 5. Navrai Majhi - English Vinglish Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Neelambari & Swanand Kirkire ![]() Who would have a thought a Marathi folk song would have been so good? Based on the latter, Navrai Majhi takes the folk'ness to higher levels, by incorporating catchy beats and modernising the whole song. Amit Trivedi smartly fuses contemporary style in. Roping in Sunidhi and Neelambari is a masterstroke - the two ladies (both amazing) indirectly represent the two different styles, with special apperances from Swanand Kirkire and Natalie. This celebration song gives you all the right reasons to celebrate, and dance along it's tunes. A definite addition to all the shaadi-music albums out there! ... 4. Saiyaara - Ek Tha Tiger Music Director: Sohail Sen Lyricist: Kausar Munir Singers: Mohit Chauhan & Tarannum Malik ![]() Saiyaara is just beautiful. Period. It's that song ... which adds soul to Ek Tha Tiger's soundtrack. Ignoring how wasted it was in the film (they didn't even use to full version), this one has elegant lyrics, superbly rendered by Mohit & Tarannum. While not path-breaking by any means, Saiyaara distinguishes itself from other songs of the same genre and stands out tall in the list. The melody is just too good. With amazing repeat value, Saiyaara comfortably sits at the 4th position on my list! ... 3. Raabta (Night In a Motel) - Agent Vinod Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya Singers: Arijit Singh & Aditi Singh Sharma ![]() The best Pritam song since Tumse Hi from Jab We Met? Most definitely. Pritam must have known that he was giving us a masterpiece while composing Raabta, since he spoils us with 4 unique versions, catering to everyone's mood! The pick of the lot for me would be the one featured in the film, sung by Arjit & Aditi, closely followed by Kehte Hai Khuda, by Arijit & Shreya. Coincidentally, Arijit is the only common singer in all the 4 versions, and listening to his lines once will tell you why. He's outstanding. Aditi Singh Sharma bowls you away with a soft, delicate rendition. The two voices gel together like magic. Amitabh Bhattacharya, especially, deserves a mention for writing such beautiful lines. Listening to Raabta makes you feel like you're in some other world, floating along, until the song comes to an end. The acoustic feel of the song adds up the uniqueness, making Raabta a classic. ... 2. Pani Da Rang - Vicky Donor Music Director: Ayushmann Khurana & Rochak Kohli Lyricist: Ayushmann Khurana Singers: Ayushmann Khurana ![]() How often does this happen? An unknown film comes and steals your heart away? Not just yours, but the hearts of an entire nation? Vicky Donor was the surprise superhit of 2012 - but now looking back, was it really a surprise? It had everything going in its favour. Not only did the film and Ayushmann hit the bulls' eyes, but the gem, aka Pani Da Rang, became hot favourite. Until October, this was my favourite of 2012 . Ayushmann adds himself to the elite list of brilliantly multi-talented people, along with Farhan Akhtar and Ali Zafar. He acts, composes, writes and sings - and does everything like a pro in his debut film itself. Hats off man. Pani Da Rang captures the subtlety and underlying calmness of Punjab through the lyrics. It's a song you're bound to fall in love with. A quick search on Youtube will link you to thousands of covers by fans who wanted to express how much Pani Da Rang managed to strike a chord with them - only goes to show the popularity of 2012's second best song! Before moving on to the Numero Uno on my list, I'd like to share this acoustic version of Pani Da Rang, by Jonita Gandhi. If you too loved Pani Da Rang, then this is a must-listen. ... ... ... 1. Jab Tak Hai Jaan - Jab Tak Hai Jaan Music Director: A.R.Rahman Lyricist: Gulzar Singers: Javed Ali & Shakthisree Gopalan ![]() It should come as no surprise that Jab Tak Hai Jaan's title song is my absolute favourite of the year after the embarrassing amount of gushing I did over this song. It instantaneously clicked me the 1st time. As of now, it ranks number 8 on my iTunes Top 25 Most Played list, with over 330 play counts. Big, big achievement. It wasn't a song you'd expect from A.R.Rahman (which could possibly explain why not everyone loved it), but what thrilled me was how wonderfully both A.R.Rahman and Yash Chopra united to create this ''epic'' feel. Right from the Piano beginning to Javed Ali humming the last note, you're transported to Yash Chopra's lala land. The irony of the title aside, the lyrics are mesmerising. They resonate with you, filling the 'epic-romantic-song' void. Javed Ali is at his best, while Shakthisree makes a striking debut. Her entry in the song take it several notches higher. While I do wish that the song was shot in the traditional Yash Chopra way, what makes it more special is that how you only have pictures of him flashing through your mind while this song plays.... does it get better than that? ... ... There you have it! What did you think I missed in the list? Which songs do you think deserved a better rank, or no rank at all? What were YOUR favourite songs this year? Ohhh my most looked forward to post of the year - I'm a music lover so I always look forward to the top 50. I'm a bit shocked but in a happy way that the IPK songs were added Rabba Ve is never going to leave my itunes list haha. I think I agree with at least 75% of the list, if not more. I'd definitely include a few other songs and take out a few or push them a bit further down the list - other than that, I wholeheartedly agree, 2012 has been a GREAT year for music. I think we needed that after having a series of years weak in that department. Edited by Phatti Sari, Dec 12 2012, 10:56 AM.

Where you've written that Irshad Kamil is dependable for his great lyrics for "Jugni" - if he's been given credit for those lyrics, that's a shame, because they haven't changed a word from the original Jugni and those lyrics are written by Arif Lohar himself. I like your list overall. Though I believe more songs from 1920 Evil Returns and Jannat 2 should've made the list over some of the other stuff on here. Also, I would've definitely ranked "Abhi Abhi" (Jism 2) and "Mann Jaage" higher on the list. ![]() Good job!! |

Awesome List! Agree with most of your list except for your maybe your Top 10. Jab Tak Hai Jaan's title song is possibly the most let down song of this year. |

I agree with Asna, but the songs in the list make me realise that I don't enjoy today's bollywood music as much as I used to, I don't see myself listening to half of these songs next year, let alone the year after

^ U mean Apna mujhe tu lagaa? But ya I agree. Where are those songs? But also I would myself remove O Saiyaan and include every other Agneepath song in my top 50 list (Gun gun guna and Shah ka Rutba....even the Ganesh song). (And also rate Laapata over Saiyaara in ETT but that may just be me).

Im with Lassi on this. I dont enjoy today's music AT ALL. Maybe some random song here or there and even though I like a particular song, if I listen to it way too much I get sick of it! Like most songs are not "timeless" like the 70s and 60s music. I can never ever tire of my 70s music collection!!! truly the Golden era of music |

)

Voh Dekhney Mein, especially, works like a refreshing lemonade. It's fun, peppy, easy to sing along and has quirky lyrics - which are easy to relate to. Add to that Ali Zafar's being his natural self, and you get a winner.

But I wish you included the title track too, it rocks
